🌙 COLDPLAY ANNOUNCE MOON MUSIC OUT OCTOBER 4TH 🎵

Hallelujah

A thread for this amazing song that has been covered countless times. Originally written by Leonard Cohen, it has been most famously covered by Jeff Buckley (on his "Grace" album) and John Cale (the soundtrack for the movie "Shrek"). It seems that every version is great in its own way. Anyone else love just about every version of this timeless classic?

To be honest, I don't think I've ever really listened to the other two versions- the only one I know (and absolutely love) is the Jeff Buckley one. I'll have to try the other two now, though. :nice:

The original is extremely good, and very different from the covers. The John Cale version is basically the Buckley version but on piano, and his voice does so much for the song.

The guitar timbre, intro and bridge in Buckley's version adds so much. Not to mention his beautiful voice, ridiculous range and sustained 20 second high notes at the end. The way he performs it is perfect in so many ways. Leonard Cohen is the original and good as well, but is basically spoken word poetry. No where near as a musical, powerful, or emotive. And I think he even acknowledged Jeff's performance as superior.

As for Rufus Wainwright, the shrek version is annoyingly mundane. Doesn't do the song much justice IMO.

The Buckley one is basically Cale's version :P

John Cale did it first, but neither are as great as the live Cohen version from glastonbury last year

It's Haleliwia - a welsh language version of Hallelujah, by welsh band Brigyn - and it's stunning...especially the harp
