the meaning of life.. . ?

Featured Replies

i am in great need of insight as one may see......

so honestly....

at times, we feel like a swinging pendulum should slice us in half. at least i feel that way sometimes. lately a bit, since i am adjusting to the work life, which everyone must experience. I don't want to be sulky, but honest. Most people are lucky with a few compadres.. getting sulky.. making friends isn't the meaning of life. .. it IS motivating.

let me rephrase: the meaning of life isn't to make friends, but they help you to feel like you are doing right. right? why do people need friends?

conclusion: what is the meaning of life, in your opinion. not FOR you. You can say what you think your purpose is, but what is THE purpose of existence for humanity?

I won't give options, because people would use them.

The meaning of life is to experience courage, love, friendship, compassion, empathy, humanity, meaning, beauty and happiness in all of it's forms.

the meaning of life... hmm. I think that as cheesy as it sounds, is just to live your life to the fullest. we are given this great opportunity to be alive right now so why not take advantage of it while we still can.

I feel that everyone has a purpose in life. It can be by things you do, like being a musician, actor, politician, baseball player, etc. or being an influence on someone.

sorry for my last post. i want to explain, to be fair. to experience happiness is not a purpose, it is a comforting feeling. if we are always happy and we experience all those things, we have still accomplished nothing.

and what about the p erson who will always be a grocery bagger, or a fast food employee, etc.

i want you to understand.. i dont like to shoot down anyone's answer, but i don't see the purpose in accepting everything if it doesn't further the discussion and push US to figure out more. i want to be dogmatic in my opinion, but not because i think i am right, but because i want you to be dogmatic in return so that you will retort with your best.

i'm not saying that they have to be successful. I just think that those people will somehow do something that will either influence or change someone elses life by being there or doing something.

that's just my personal take on it

what is the meaning of meaning? if all we do is help someone one day to pick up their groceries, and the rest of our lives we struggle to make ends meat, is that meaningful? what makes it meaningful to help someone else? if someone else is a person, well so are we. so if we help ourself, we are adding meaning.. if you go with 'positive influence' as the meaning of life.

more importantly: what good comes out of making someone happy? they feel happy. what is the point? feelings are temporal

Life: noun

1. the condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects and dead organisms, being manifested by growth through metabolism, reproduction, and the power of adaptation to environment through changes originating internally.

is there anything that separates us from dogs? dogs make people happy. does that mean they fulfill human purpose?

so for the suicidal person, the most basic meaning of life is just to live. that could be the very base of life's meaning, to exist and protect existence. but i don't even know if that is true.

I honestly believe there is no answer. Life is to you whatever you want it to be. If you believe life is just the universe's accident, then live based on that. But if you believe you should experience certain things and live a certain way, live based on that. There is no real answer and the only way to make yourself happy is to follow what you think is the right way to go. The only thing everyone should do is try their hardest not to bring negativity into other's lives, regardless of how they view life.

There is no meaning, if we all died now, never to return in the grand scale of things it wouldn't mean a thing to the universe. We are pointless.

But if that's too depressing, here are some alternatives on a smaller scale/clichés

It's to enjoy life and make the most of the short time we have on this planet.

Procreation.

Love.

Someone called me that as a joke, so instead of getting mad, I embrace the joke. See how that works? ;)

gotta love ya!

My opinion - just putting it out there:

There is no "Meaning" to life, its a case of you're here, alive, just live. But you can try to make it fulfilled, and your life will follow a path that you can have some (not all) control over, through choices and decisions that are right for you. But the most important thing to remember about life is that every thing that you experience is a lesson learnt, the good and the bad. Make your life rich with experience of all kinds, learn and grow from the outcomes and be kind to yourself and those around you. Its the only way to make it through.

I also think there's no such thing as an universal meaning of life. Life's just what each living concious being wants to make of it.

Very good answers so far! ;)

except for this one:

The meaning of life is to experience courage, love, friendship, compassion, empathy, humanity, meaning, beauty and happiness in all of it's forms.

And hunger, disease, pain, hate, awfulness, death...

That was just too cheesy.

Ask yourself "what is the world?", not "why I'm here?".

if you understand that the world doesn't exist for you, but you exist for the world, it will be easier then to live.

And it follows the meaning of your own life - it's what you think is valuable for you, what keeps you here: it may be self-realisation in a likable job or having a loving family and so on.

That's my truth. :) can deny?

^ Good answer Onute! :) Most people just think that way because of the lack of spiritualism they feel nowadays. I think.

I also think there's no such thing as an universal meaning of life. Life's just what each living concious being wants to make of it.

Oh and forgot to add something...

Of course without hurting other concious beings!

well, to me there has to be a meaning, because I don't believe the world exists because of nothing. The world is something, because it exists. If it didn't, there would be no meaning. I also believe that free will exists, as opposed to linear existence. Meaning doesn't necessarily arise from existence, but because there is matter and such, I believe there is a greater power. Depending on what people think about that greater power affects what they feel about meaning. Even a godless individual should believe that the human race is meant to protect its existence and discover more knowledge.

There is no "point" to life -- only what YOU feel YOU should do. There is no grand "meaning" that COMES with life -- you must make your OWN.
