Interpretation of lyrics

Featured Replies

I am going to restart the conversation by asking if anyone has any clue what the line "Starters, you need to go on" in AROBTTH is about.

:inquisitive:

Oh yeah.

Well whatever; it still doesn't make any sense.

Oh wait, yes it does.

GOD I FAIL :shame:

awha, no its cool (: its easy to mis-hear lyrics.

i don't know if you know anything by the white stripes, but they have a song with the line 'oh i think i smell a rat' and i had a friend who thought jack white was singing 'oh i think i smell all right' for ages *grins*

Chris doesn't remember if he wrote Politik before or after 9/11, he just knows it was in or around that date.

It is more about the reaction to it. He is asking for compasion and human feelings over the Political bs.

Violet Hill is about Fox news, and our current wars.

I've always seen Twisted Logic more as an enviromentalist song, kind of

I think Don't Panic is the environmental song lol

Violet hill?

Violet hill is somewhat political, its talking about soldiers going off to war, and referring to the government saying:

If you love me, wont you let me know/why'd you let me go?

The story of violet hill is told from the perspective of a soldier, and is a war protest. Hence the lyrics:

I dont wanna be a soldier

I came up with this:

CEMETERIES OF LONDON

First, if you want the lyrics listen to the song or type them on google, I'm not gonna post them here for you.

Chris and Guy once mentioned in an interview that with this song they get the image in their heads of the 18th century life in London, with witches being burned in public or someting like that (I don't remember exactly their quote, but I hope you get the idea). Thus you may believe the meaning of this song is literal, specially because of the atmosphere created with the music and Chris's haunting voice.

I believe this whole thing is a metaphore, and it's about Man relationship with God and the spiritual life. For me this song is about how the human kind is constantly looking for the truth, trying to understand and give a logical explanation to everything that surrounds him. But there are some things no one can understand, like God. This song is about how everyone has an idea of God, everyone is looking for answers despite they have to deal with normal life matters -the morning is for sleeping-. On this request for spiritual balance religions appear, and with this the different interpretations of God <There are ghost towns in the ocean-the ocean is vast and varied->. But in the end it's always the same, and have always been the same, must fail to achieve that spiritual goal in their life, and do not understand God, or how the universe works or meaning of life. <There's no light over London today>

I might be wrong, though, Chris could have written this just to fit twith the time signature and chrods. I hope I was clear.

My interpretation of CoL was always similar to Ricardo's... But he put it better than I probably could. :nice:

It's funny how everyone assumes the meanings behind the lyrics are all deep and well-thought out, when in reality they're probably not. Not that Chris doesn't work hard on his lyrics, but he probably just writes them more "in the moment" and then when you look back you can see a lot of depth in them. It's always easy to see things like that when you are looking for them. I bet if Chris saw some of the lyrical explanations people assume, he'd laugh out loud and say something like "I wish I was smart enough to write something that meaningful".

Just my two cents.

Hey Chris is smarter than Einstein

This, that was just my interpretation, what I think the song is about, not what Chris thinks about it, therefore the title is interpretation, not meaning of lyrics. Meh anyway my english is awful

Well he didn't have to write them with the meaning we like best for us to interpret it that way. It doesn't matter if he was not totally aware of what it meant when he was writing it -- the song could still mean that. If that makes sense?

"Yes" is oozing with lust. I would love to know what it's actually about [and if it is actually about Chris and Jonny that would be so amazing.]

I want to talk about A Spell A Rebel Yell. The song is (strategically placed as) a B-Side to the Violet Hill. If Violet Hill sung at the PoV of a soldier who's leaving the loved ones, ASARY is quite simply the opposite. It's about those who got left behind yearning for the soldier to come back. The soldier (VH) and the loved one (ASARY) apparently share the same thought about the war: it's wrong, but inevitable. But the loved one cannot produce anything but words. And those words can only help them through two kinds of action. An endless repetitive wish or prayer, which little by little turns the words into a spell. Or a violent demanding outcry, which builds the words up into a rebel yell...

...maybe.

I think this is barking up the right tree, the night before the day are states of mind though, all in all I think the whole album is about overcoming yourself.

I could have been a bit wrong but hey....

I believe Chris said in a broad sense that CoL was about wondering where you go after you die.

But obviously that's jsut general and Chris wouldn't, you know, get in deep conversation about the specifics cause he gets that way about his lyrics.

with a simple explanation like that is enough I think

But that isn't based on a clear situation...

Man, I am fighting a losing battle hear :sweatdrop:

It seems pretty clear to me. It's anti war and if you take that line about the fox literally, you could say that it's anti-republican because fox news is pretty openly biased on the republican side of things.
