University overseas..

Featured Replies

That's how American private higher education is. You pay out the ass for it, and in most cases I wonder if it was worth it at all. The top universities in England and Canada are a fraction of the price, for example. You can get slightly cheaper public higher education over here, like if I went to Connecticut state universities, I would save $20,000 or so, but there are reasons why that wouldn't have worked well for me.

At this point in my life, I'm majorly kicking myself for not directly enrolling in a British university for my entire education, but at the time I was applying for all this stuff back in 2006, the prospect of being that far from home for that long was too much. Now I would give anything to be there full-time, and so would my bank account :P.

Lol Jay has some really strong opinions on the price of university. He went to one of the most expensive universities in the country.

it's way too much, well there are lots of differences (salaries, etc) but here the private universities does cost around 10,000 I guess... I pay like 6,000 US dollars and I go to one of the best universities in the country, the other one is even cheaper because it's public

how do people pay so much there in the US? even here we need to take lots of loans

muchas gracias :)

Man, my K-12 education cost more than most countries' university costs :P.

Basically, lots of people pay off loans until they're elderly :P. Ok, not THAT long, but well into their 30s in some cases. I'm just pessimistic about US education in general, especially the costs.

Some people also get financial aid or scholarships based on certain things, but getting them can be harder than they look in lots of cases. Being a WHITE GIRL from CONNECTICUT in my case didn't help matters :P.

muchas gracias :)

Some agencies and organizations offer a full tuition ride for a university major. Now if you are going to some fancy private university or Ivy League (Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, etc) they can give a lot of assistance in financial aid if your family's income is less than $120K per year. These type of families are not required to contribute too much for the tuition expenses.

Sounds good to go to an Ivy League university practically for about $15K per year out of your own pocket... the thing is to get admittance into it :dozey:

:stunned:

Are you in La Católica Lore?

yeah :uhoh: why?

A note on expenses about university overseas, based on my experience.

I'm an American who attends an American university/college. My tuition is about $42,000/year. The coming year, I am attending a British university. Because I'm going on a program based out of my American university/college, I'm still paying $42,000/year to go to the British uni, even though if I were to directly enroll in the British uni, it would probably cost me less than $10,000/year.

I know America has the reputation for having the best universities in the world (for the most part), but honestly, the price you pay for it is a TOTAL and COMPLETE rip-off. I'm not saying don't look at American universities, I'm just saying beware of how much more money you'll be shelling out if you go to one, versus a comparable school in the UK or Canada or other countries.

To the thread author: I'm attending a British university for the coming year (perhaps longer), so if you have questions, feel free to ask me anything :nice:. Since I haven't started just yet, I could mostly answer things about visas and other preparations (and boy do I have a lot to say about that hellish process :P), but feel free to ask, and I could probably find out .

Sorry for the delayed reply :P

WOW that's a lot of money!

I'm kind of doing what you're doing now, I'm going to go to uni here in Aus for a year and then go over to London for a year on exchange, it's cheaper and the uni i'll be at (IF i get in :S) gives some financial support as well

besides, we're at that point where exams are in a month and a bit and it's starting to get even more expensive to go overseas (getting visas, doing tests that cost like, a lot) so I figure a year is better than nothing...

And you'll definitely need to tell me what it's like up there :D what university are you attending up there?

The visa doesn't cost THAT much, and it's basically a one-time expense anyway (but a total, total bitch to obtain). What tests do you need to take? Maybe the Australian way of doing things is different than ours, but I didn't have to take any sorts of tests, nor have I heard of anyone that has had to.

I'll be at UEA in Norwich starting in September . However, I'll be in London as of Monday! :freak:

yeah :uhoh: why?

I dont know, it's a good school

how did you know I was talking about that school? :P I've met some mexican exchange students there anyway :P

Really? Cool, what are you studying?

Well what other University in Chile is famous ? :p

I don't know :uhoh:

I'm studying sociology

Are mexican people who go there smart or dumb? :P I don't know what schools have exchange programs with La Católica

I don't know, probably they are smart :wacky:

But aren't you chilean good with school? Because like 60% of mexicans are not

what do you mean?

Mexico is proportionaly the country that invests the most on Education and whenever they take level measuring tests they fail

we also fail in all the international tests :P there are a lot of problems related to the education quality. If you have money can go to a good school and a good uni after that but if you are middle class or poor the chances are like one in a million. I was lucky I went to a really good public school but not everybody has the same opportunities
