Pot was only made illegal somewhat recently. Just because something is illegal does not mean it should be, not long ago women could not vote, nor could anyone but white men....

 

There is always someone wanting to ban the things you like, if may be for religious or other reasons but if it can happen with one thing simply because people do not agree with it, it could just as easily happen to something you love.

 

So in a way standing up for something you don't even like or agree with or at least not supporting its ban, you in turn help keep the things you like from possibly being banned in the future.

 

Like I said before its always easy to be against something you don't like, but a time might come when it is something you like or love and you would be in the same situation. There is always someone out there wanting to ban religions, political groups, social activities and races, so my view is you have to stand up for all of them even if you don't agree with them so you nip it in the bud and they won't get to something I like or love. One day it may be drugs next it could be my political party, then my religion then my skin color, we must assure everyone gets equal treatment with what they want as long as no one else is hurt by it.

I think the Tobacco industry wanted it gone. I also read it was partially racist, they claimed weed made black men horny and more dangerous and caused them to lust after white women so they wanted it banned.

Nope, marijuana was made illegal by FDR. Nothing has "always" been illegal. Things are made illegal by the government. There was a time when cocaine was legal, and many housewives were addicted to it (in the late 1800s and early 1900s).

 

As long as people are aware of the dangers of addictive drugs, they will not use them. I can get a cheap thrill from jumping into traffic - but as long as I'm aware of the danger of doing it, I won't do it. A law, a punishment, cannot alter my decisions.

Yeah, you make a great point. I just think using the drug issue to make that point is kind of... ironic or something. :freak: I still think drug abuse is horrible, and I wouldn't use them or want someone I love to use them, but to each his own, I guess. :\

Taxation and war are both legal. And they are both celebrated!

 

What sort of message does that send to children?

 

"Theft is okay, as long as you're giving the stolen goods to the poor. And of course, you take a cut for yourself."

 

"Vandalism and murder are okay, as long as you have a good reason."

 

The problem is making a distinction between ends and means. In the case of drugs, the "end" we all seek is for nobody to be addicted. The "means" the government provides are arrest (forceful kidnapping) and imprisonment/fines (enslavement/theft).

 

We ignore the truth of the means, because the ends appear noble. But the reality is both ends and means are a reshuffling of atoms, and both subject to ethical analysis.

Well, thanks for opening my mind a bit more. :nice: Even though legalizing drugs doesn't really sit well with me, I see that there are a lot of things to consider. And hey, if someone wants to ruin his life with drugs, why should I care? :tongue:
