Athens or Sparta

Featured Replies

Women and slaves excluded, at one point Athens was a truer democracy than today's governments. People would gather, and the most amount of hands won. It was a whole lot fairer and more modern than any society up until that date, while in Sparta you had no freedoms whatsoever.

You took the words right out of my mouth. ;)

Yea I hated all the n00bs who acted like they knew everything about Sparta.

[/nerd]

There's this fucking moron on my swim team who thinks he knows everything; after 300 came out he was all like OMG 3000000 I WANNA LIVE IN SPARTA AND KILL PEOPLE AND GET CUT UPPPPPP

I hate him so much.

Both societies had their advantages and disadvantages. For a woman, neither society really would have been the idea place but that was how it wa during those times. Athens was home to the "idea" of democracy though it did not practice it. However, their contributions to art and philosophy is undeniable. Sparta was a very strong society and could hold its on, but was lacking on other parts like family (boys removed to train for the military). Of course, Athens was not the greatest on the family idea either but not as bad as Sparta. So, it really is a toss-up between the two.

Personally, I would rather live at Delphi. LOL!!

Tracy!

To answer the question:

This is where my greek culture class comes in. Personally, I would rather live in Athens. Sparta was just too focused on war and being powerful. Athens was more intellectual and gave many ideas towards art.

Neither, I'd choose Persia. 300 is the most fucked up movie in the world. And it's biased as well. Spartans were very warlike, and Athens is interesting, but women had no rights. In Persia there was no slavery, and rights were equal. That's my two cents.

Oh, I did a project on this back in sixth grade, same comparison too :escaping:

I may pick Sparta because women had more rights there than Athens. Women could actually go out there and play sports and stuff like that, and sports was really important. The only thing I don't like is having the idea of how young girls got married and how they would get married to more than one man.

But I like Athens because of the spotlight on art and literature. I love those two things more than almost anything else in the world (almost).

But wait, didn't they have that huge freaking plague which wiped out almost everyone?!?! :uhoh:

Athens. But I'd sneak over to Sparta every once in a while to learn Tae Kwon Do and observe the muscle-studs.

Athens.

The Greeks were fucking awesome to put it bluntly.

I studied "Medicine Through Time" and the things they did in Greece when they did were just decades ahead of everyone else, then you hae all the philosphy as well on top of that, they were the main intellectual society, where brians actually were the most important thing, if you were intelligent you were respected and people would look up to you.

Then the Romans came along, stole everything from the Greeks but changed the names a bit and then went all badass deciding to conquer everything.

The Romans actually brought England a lot of the advanced systems we lacked though. They brought with them all this knowledge and what did we do? Once they were gone, we destroyed everything they created in our country, burned their books (thanks church!) and went into the "Dark Ages" setting us even further behind Europe than we already were.

So yeah Athens.

You should do that thing from "Party Down". Ask him to write down how many times he has seen the movie 300 and then say, as you are about to read it "if this number is more than 1, *insert name* is gay" he'll love that.

Athens.

i pick Athens...they started democracy...the concept of it al least, and they were brilliant, literature, architecture, art :shocked2::shocked2::shocked2:

and Spartans were mean, when Athens was about to go to war and asked for their help they didn't respond :inquisitive:

I'm afraid as a girl, I would have to chose Sparta, as the women there were closer to being considered a citizens and they did have rights against men. However out of which one was better I would have to say Athens. Sparta had a chance at ruling Greece and it failed - it was too insula and alien for the rest of Greece to adapt to.

We're actually going to be having a debate about this next Friday in my AP Western Civ class. I'll let you know after that.

ooh...Which side are you representing?

Don't know yet, we find out on Monday. I hope I get Athens, because from what I remember from freshman year, Athens was smart and dignified and Sparta were kind of brutes.

if you get sparta, make sure to dismiss the athenians as a bunch of philosophers and boy lovers.

And bring a huge picture of the Warren Cup.
