[Article]The Brits: Why They Can't Be Trusted With Music

Featured Replies

Apart from Coldplay, Oasis and dare I say it Radiohead, the writer has a point. The bands mentioned don't pretend to be American, they are what they see themselves, British. THIS IS the country that annualy pops shit at the top of the Christmas charts with soon to be X Factor rejects. This is the country who would rather see balls like Lady Gaga, Little Boots etc at the top of the charts rather than proper talent like Elbow. Coldplay have only had one number 1 hit in the UK and US, even though they are the biggest band in the world. Says something that todays youth in Britain is even more tied to shit than they ever used to be. 10 15 years ago Coldplay would have had at least 4 number 1s but thanks to stations like Radio1, Smash Hits and The Hits, they are more interested in keeping little girls happy.

#1 Song on American iTunes as of October 3rd, 2009:

"Party In The U.S.A." by Miley Cyrus.

Yeah, the Brits are the ones with fucked-up taste.

I will commit suicide over that thought one day.

(How about we make our own country where only good music is allowed.)

That's not to mention all the "urban" shite like Dizzee Rascal.:dozey:

YES

And this is where I stopped reading your post. Just because it's pop doesn't mean it's not good. Little Boots writes AMAZING pop songs. I was reading an interview with her today and she mentioned how pop gets alot of crap esp in America where the only know teeny, disposable bubblegum pop: Miley, Britney (10 yrs ago) Jonas Brothers etc. But Britain has a better understanding of pop music.

Both Lady Gaga and Little Boots write and record their own music. I'm not saying this is important, but if that's what you mean by 'proper talent', well...

Whilst I don't necesarily agree with Lady Gaga, howyousawtheworld has a point. The top 10 is a mess these days for the most part, and where other than Britain can Girls Aloud (who don't write their own music, nor can they perform) win best song over Viva La Vida? I wondered if that event was the reason Chris invited them to their UK gigs (or was it before Feb '09), since I noticed Chris both takes the populist view to heart and keeps on top (or his advisors do :D) on what's happening in the UK (Strictly Come Dancing, X-Factor, etc).

We used to sneer and jeer at the supposed "lack of taste" in the US, yet they are the ones that recognised Coldplay for their worth: solely on merit, where as in the UK they vote for songs that they believe sound nice as ringtones.

and where other than Britain can Girls Aloud (who don't write their own music, nor can they perform) win best song over Viva La Vida?

Well, GA are really Xenomania's pet project. And saying that, they do make fantastic pop songs. Shame about their lack of personality really- that's the only thing that's stopping them from becoming bigger than the Spice Girls.

The Promise whilst a good song, did not deserve to win over VLV. That's a fact.

Blah blah blah, America's music sucks, Britain's music is so much better is all I read in here.

BOTH countries have terrible Top 10s, BOTH have unrecognized talent. (I would add my country as an example but all we get is the terrible shit from America Top 10, sometimes some British stuff from their top artists and a hit song from an Aussie band)

Also, I fail to see how U2 is British.

Yes... Australia basically get the leftover shit from USA and British pop charts.

The only Coldplay songs I've ever heard played on the 'popular' radio stations here have been Viva La Vida and Clocks. I am serious.

Though, admittedly, I don't listen to radio much...

But Lady Gaga's crap is being played left, right and centre in radio land. It's despicable.

Simply solution to that problem - don't listen to radio.:smug:
