So many people risk their lives each day of each year in the pursuit of peace, especially in Africa and many die or are tortured and Obama wins the prize. I don't think any politicians should win it, there are so many deserving people who have sacrificed so much for peace in Africa and other places. He sits in his nice office eating expensive dinners like all other politicians and receives a prize for peace? While so many live horrible and dangerous lives for peace right now.

He's bombing Pakistan and keeping our military in most nations to enforce our every want and desire and he receives a award for peace? Fucking ridiculous.

'I don't deserve this': Obama stunned as he is awarded Nobel Peace Prize after less than nine months in office

  • 'It's not April 1, is it?': White House aide's response to award

  • 'Twitter crashes as millions join in debate over announcement
  • Lech Walesa: 'It's too early... He has no contribution so far'

  • Decision was unanimous, says Nobel director

  • Obama's vision of world without nuclear weapons praised
  • President: 'I'll give $1.4million prize money to charity

Barack Obama today admitted he does not think he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize after being sensationally awarded the honour.

The U.S. president said he was both 'surprised and deeply humbled' to win the award.

The Nobel Committee has shocked the world by choosing Mr Obama as the 2009 Nobel Peace laureate, despite the fact that he has only been in office for less than nine months.

Speaking at the White House today, Mr Obama said he did not 'view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments,' but rather as a recognition of goals he has set for the United States and the world.

Mr Obama said: 'I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many transformative figures that have been honoured by this prize.'

But, he added: 'I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations to confront the challenges of the 21st Century.'

He also said he would give the $1.4million (£880,000) prize money to charity.

Mr Obama became the U.S. president less than two weeks before the February 1 nomination deadline.

Global surprise at today's announcement was even shared by the President's own staff.

'It's not April 1, is it?' an unnamed White House aide asked when a reporter woke him up with a request for comment.

The Nobel committee's decision to give the prestigious honour to Obama was welcomed by some but also greeted with both disquiet and bemusement.

Former Polish president and 1983 Peace laureate Lech Walesa slammed the decision as 'too early'.

'So soon? Too early. He has no contribution so far. He is still at an early stage. He is only beginning to act,' he said today.

But he added: 'This is probably an encouragement for him to act. Let's see if he perseveres. Let's give him time to act.'

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it was awarding the 48-year-old president the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for 'his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples'.

Former president and fellow laureate Jimmy Carter congratulate Mr Obama, calling the award a 'bold statement of international support for his vision'.

'It shows the hope his administration represents not only to our nation but to people around the world,' he said.

But mere hope was not enough for Republicans.

'The real question Americans are asking is, 'What has President Obama actually accomplished?'' said Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.

'It is unfortunate that the president's star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights. One thing is certain: President Obama won't be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility or backing up rhetoric with concrete action.'

The question over whether he should have been awarded the prize has already crashed social networking site Twitter as millions around the world joined the debate today.

It is not clear who nominated Mr Obama, 48, for the prize. He is the third sitting U.S. president to receive the award.

'Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics'

-Nobel Committee

Though his name has been mentioned in speculation before today's announcement, many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to reward the president.

The Nobel committee clearly disagreed.

'Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Mr Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future,' the committee said.

'His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.'

'Mr Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play,' the committee said.

The decision had been unanimous, said Norwegian Nobel Institute director Geir Lundestand today, speaking on a morning U.S. talk show.

'We knew the world would be positive, surprised, and some would be stunned'

- Nobel director Geir Lundestand

'President Obama has changed very dramatically international politics,' Mr Lundestad said on 'Good Morning America'.

'We feel he has emphasized multilateral diplomacy, he has addressed international institutions, dialogue negotiations. He has inspired the world with his vision of a world without nuclear arms. He has changed the U.S. policy dramatically. There's a whole list.'

And he admitted he committee had known their decision would shock the world - but said Mr Obama had 'nothing to fear'.

'We knew the world would be positive, surprised and some would be stunned,' he said.

'We have discussed the situation in Afghanistan. We understand the foreign policy of the United States has to be a very complex one with many different considerations. But we point particularly to the overall approach.'

The committee said it attached special importance to Mr Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

In September Mr Obama infuriated America's Right by scrapping a planned missile-shield to be set up in Europe.

The decision pleased Russia, however, which had viewed the shield as a threat.

In July talks in Moscow, Mr Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev agreed that nuclear warhead limits would be reduced from the current range of 1,700-2,200 to as low as 1,500. The United States now as about 2,200 such warheads, compared to about 2,800 for the Russians.

But there has been no word on whether either side has started to act on the reductions.

The Nobel Peace Prize, worth 10 million Swedish crowns (£875,000) will be handed over in Oslo on December 10. Mr Obama will travel to Oslo for the ceremony.

I disagree. Plus he hasn't even accomplished anything yet.

How could he in such a short time ? So much crap has built up before starting his new job. It will take some time to get significant results. In the meantime, things will get better little by little.

I think he deserves it as well. No other man made the world sit up and actually want to discuss peaefully with the guy when he was elected last year. Yeah it might be a bit too early but I have no doubt he would get it sometime.

He's doing his best to get peace even with people that are tough

By expanding our military and keeping the American empire?

His policies have made things worse. He's spent enough money to have a effect on the economy and it's showing. He'll be in office for 4 years and people will still say he didn't have enough time. I hear people saying Bush didn't have enough time!

His millions of dollars and talks of peace won him the prize while people are being slaughtered in other nations for peace. Sounds fair to me. People are suffering or will or are under the threat of suffering and death in the struggle for peace all over the world and Obama has a personal chef and talks of peace while continuing our empire when tucked into his 1,000 sheets at night. This is 100% BS.

i don't know what's said there but our president = Obama case. :dozey:

exactly the same, now we have more soldiers abroad in WARS, when is a PEACE man.

He has spent a lot of money on not necesary things, not to mention the changes he has done on law which were not necesary too and now you can't take back and we'll suffer the consequences in 10 years.

and yet people says he don't have yet time to do all he have to do :dozey:

(he has been reelected, promised while on campaign we'll get work and now unemployement rate is one of the highest in Europe, yet many people see him as another Messiah too .... not to mention what happened HERE with his Obama picture).

sorry i couldn't avoid that. :escaping:

Imagine a world where politicians are anonymous. Just numbers.

President #47 or whatever. And you never saw his face, only his actions. He never gives speeches. When you extract the "personality" from politics, you get the truth. And I bet most people around the world would riot in such a situation, and take down their governments. Except they don't, because our politicians are actors. They have great smiles, say nice words, and relate to us. We root for them.

Of course they don't want peace, and America shouldn't keep sticking its nose in other peoples' business. We need to stop sending money to Israel and Palestine alike. They can learn to get along without running to Mommy everytime one smacks the other.
