LOLspeak - origins

Featured Replies

Hi everybody!

For some time this "language" is fascinating me now.

It's quite a pain for people whose English isn't that great / people from other countries... but I can't deny that it makes my little brain happy when it finds out that "Pweety" = "Pretty".

Hard to explain what I mean with that

But what I'm interested in is the origin of it.

A search on Urban Dictionary took me to this entry:

LINK

An annoying, but yet sarcastic origination of a style of text that now has evolved widespread over the Internet. It is usually used with Kitten/Cat pictures, as well as other animals, with text captions in this style of writing.

The style became popular with people who often couldn't spell words properly, and now has turned into a "cool" method of social communication between humans. It has now lost it's true meaning of pure sarcasm and people actually talk in this as if it's "cool". It is a pure usage of letters and manipulation of words to how it sounds when spoken through "speech". Today it is used on purpose and for those who are aware of its original intention, it is NOT cool, in fact it's ridiculous.

So can anyone tell me if it was originally a way to make fun of people who can't spell properly?

And is there anyone who can tell me where the cat connection comes from?

There are blog entries about it from 2007 and probably earlier... since when is it so widespread??

And last question:

Love it or loathe it?

It is indeed ridiculous, and when my English was utter crap I couldn't understand a word, but now I have to laugh when I read LOLspeak :D It's fun to write LIEK DIS LULZ... or something like that :P

Ah and I think this cat stuff comes from 4chan, but I'm not sure about that :S

It did indeed start with LOLcats and the idea that if a cat could speak, they would speak in baby talk. Really, sort of like the crazy old cat lady talks to her cats. It kind of evolved from there until it had absorbed most similar things- text speak and gamer speak and some other random quirks. Maybe even a bit of Engrish.

I can`t say I love it but I don`t hate it either.

Anyways, I think it`s quite silly isn`t it?

Thanks for the answer! :nice:

Someone must've started it... isn't it fascinating that it's like everywhere now?

(I'd love to find out who / which site started it)

I think it's funny, makes my brain work as well Anna :P
