but i wouldn't say this thread is all that relevant; a lot of my friends listen to pop and don't get why i listen to bands like coldplay - that doesn't make me stop listening to them! also, i couldn't care less when people who don't know i like coldplay find out, then start insulting them. i listen to what i LIKE to listen to. for example, my friend put on kesha the other day and i told her to turn it off because it was making my ears bleed (well ok, not literally :laugh3:) that article only applies to some teenagers :)

Of course, you are correct. Fortunately there are exceptions to this rule. It's the bland, image-driven, manufactured, cheesy stuff that is followed by the "sheep", owing to the way it's marketed.;)

We ALL have listen to shitty music as teenagers. I had my spice girls moment when I was 14 and I'm not ashamed of it. I had fun listening to it back then and still have fun listening to it now, it reminds me of this happy time, kinda like a 'proust madeleine'.

So yeah right now the kids are into Bieber and Tokio Hotel but hey..they're kids! I don't see the harm in the fact they have their idols, how shitty they can be. Music is about feeling and if it make them feel good, then who cares?!

haha....bhangra's pretty lively music (& frigging loud when performed live)! poor you!

i personally don't mind if it's played like during a themed event or it's a celebration in an Indian community area, but bhangra all the time while i eat would be pretty annoying...& bloody cheesy.

hell yeah! i'd categorise those phases as the "guilty pleasures" part of our music collection(s)...haha :P

 

i never really got into the Spice Girls, but i did have my fair share of boyband stuff. particularly Boyzone & NKOTB + some Backstreet Boys, NSync, Take That...the usual suspects growing up in the 90s.

 

tho i guess i should also be thankful that my friends were also very into Nirvana (methinks Nevermind shaped my generation/class! haha), Guns & Roses, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith (note the American dominance :dozey: )...talk about musical extremes! looking back, it's like we were listening to everything from pop to grunge in the 90s! :lol:

i still have mine & was still using a Discman in the 2000s...until i finally caved in & got myself an iPod. now i can't imagine lugging around a Discman/Walkman along with my selection of CDs/cassettes to listen to when i'm out & about!

my dad had a huge cassette tape collection that was kept in a drawer under my bed (due to lack of space) so i'd occasionally listen to some. he was more of a Beatles fan too, alongside a lot of what is now "classic rock" stuff...tho there was a fair amount of Cat Stevens & Bob Marley stuff too. :inquisitive:

 

& the radio was practically always on in my house, my dad's office or at my cousins' homes, usually tuned to a rock station. so somehow along the way i guess i discovered U2, Def Leppard, etc.

Yes, I could never get over how all these boy bands invariably ended up looking "gay" in their photos and vids when their target audience was teenage girls. It was hilarious!:P
