Decided to tune in for the England game tonight. Was actually very impressed! Can't remember a game where England had their all their players firing on all cylinders. Thought Rooney was outstanding and he deserved his MOTM. Gerrard linked up play from the defence to the attack beautifully and with an attack consisting of Townsend and Sturridge, England actually have a team that may just make people rethink their opinions of them. They'll be tough to beat in Brazil and will be a side the top top sides would ideally like to avoid. They'll head to a tournament with a real potent attack for the first time in a long long time with an attacking line up of Sturridge, Rooney, Townsend and Gerrard behind. Even Welbeck was decent tonight and made himself available so you could add him in there.

Chile & Ecuador revel, Uruguay face more drama

2196938_FULL-LND.jpg

Two-time champions Uruguay served up a thrilling 3-2 win over Argentina on Tuesday but must now beat Jordan in next month's intercontinental play-off if they are to reach the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™.

Uruguay were beaten to the punch by Chile and Ecuador, who claimed the final automatic South American qualifying berths behind regional group winners Argentina and second-placed Colombia.

Saluting his team for a "dignified" end to their regional program, Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez indicated they must not take Jordan lightly.

"Like all Uruguayans I hope we make it through (but) we would be very wrong to think Jordan cannot cause us problems," Tabarez warned.

Chile beat Ecuador 2-1 in Santiago to ensure third place in the regional table with 28 points from their 16 matches, two behind Colombia and four shy of two-time world champions Argentina.

Despite their loss Ecuador just prised the final automatic slot away from the Uruguayans on goal difference after both landed a points tally of 25.

Uruguay, ranked seventh in the world, had lost their previous qualifier in Ecuador, compromising their hopes. But they did at least sign off with a win and will be optimistic of proving too strong for Asian nation Jordan.

Cristian Rodriguez put Uruguay into an early lead only for Maxi Rodriguez to drill past Fernando Muslera in the Uruguayan goal three minutes later after a fine through ball from Augusto Fernandez.

Muslera brilliantly stopped an Erik Lamela volley as Argentina - without the injured Lionel Messi - threatened to wreck any lingering chance the Uruguayans had of sneaking into the final automatic slot.

But the Montevideo crowd were on their feet again as their sky-blue shirted stars again went in front, courtesy of a Luis Suarez penalty - after the Liverpool man had been bundled to the ground in the box - his effort just eluded goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

Already assured of top spot, Argentina levelled again with Maxi Rodriguez bagging his second four minutes before the break with a fine run and shimmy past a pair of defenders.

The Uruguayans again rolled their sleeves up, however, and Edinson Cavani, dangerous all night, made it 3-2 six minutes after the restart.

Argentina's Rodriguez almost completed his hat-trick with a shot which whizzed past Muslera but just off target as Argentina suffered only their second loss of the series.

With Uruguayan hopes resting on the play-offs South America faces the prospect of none of the top four at the last Copa America regional championship in 2011 making it to Brazil.

It was in Brazil that Uruguay scored their most famous win, defeating the Selecao on their own hallowed Maracana turf in the 1950 World Cup final, adding to the Charruas 1930 success.

But now they must endure the play-offs for a fourth consecutive time. To reach Japan/Korea 2002, Uruguay ended Australia's dreams, then lost to the same opponents in a penalty shoot-out ahead of the 2006 finals. Four years ago, they beat Costa Rica.

Jordan are ranked 73rd in the world compared to Uruguay's seventh.

Chile, Ecuador book Brazil ticket

Chile made up for their loss of a three-goal lead in Colombia last weekend to finish the job in front of their own supporters in Santiago.

Chile's Alexis Sanchez scored the opener after 35 minutes with a header from an Eugenio Mena cross and Cardiff star Gary Medel added a second from close range just three minutes later.

Felipe Caicedo pulled one back for Ecuador midway through the second half to set up a barnstorming finish

Paraguay, who lost the Copa America final to Uruguay, and Peru, who came third in the continental showpiece, both crashed and burned in the World Cup qualifiers.

Paraguay, whose 2011 coach Gerardo Martino now coaches Barcelona, endured a miserable campaign featuring just three wins. They miss out on a fifth consecutive finals appearance and closed with a 2-1 home loss to Colombia.

Mario Yepes bagged a brace - his first a free header, his second scrambled in early in the second half, with Jorge Rojas having drawn first blood for the Paraguayans.

Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin was sent off for Colombia, meaning he will miss their first match in Brazil next June.

Peru were later facing bottom side Bolivia in Lima in an Andean derby.

The translation of the announcer's rant against Mexico.

Here's A Translation Of The Mexican Soccer Announcer Going On An Epic Anti-Mexico Rant After The US Scores A Goal

Tony Manfred Oct. 16, 2013, 9:35 AM 520 2

usa-goal-orozco.jpg BEIN Sports

The United States scored two goals in stoppage time to save Mexico from World Cup elimination in stunning fashion on Tuesday night.

After the game, a great video of TV Azteca announcer Christian Martinoli going bonkers after the U.S. goal surfaced online. He briefly speaks in English, yelling, "We love you forever and ever! God bless America!"

But the rest of the rant, in Spanish, is equally as amazing. People were translating brief bits here and there on Twitter last night, but now we have a full translation thanks to Deadspin commenter wdcrob.

Martinoli basically calls the Mexican team worthless and says America did everything for them.

Wow (via Deadspin):

"It is because of the USA that we are being placed in the playoff ...BECAUSE OF THEM , NOT DUE TO YOU..NOT ANY OF YOU in the green shirts ....IT WAS THEM!!.NOT YOU!..THEY DID IT!!!!!NOT YOU! remember this forever..... KEEP THIS CLEARLY IN MIND FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIVES! You do NOTHING for the shirt, you do NOT put the effort, you have NOT placed us in the playoffs , you HAVE NOT placed us in the WORLD CUP ..YOU WOULD NOT HAVE KEPT US ALIVE....IT WAS ESTADOS UNIDOS, NOT YOU! NOT YOU AND YOUR ARROGANCE/CONCEIT.....NOT YOU AND YOUR INFAMY....NOT YOU AND YOUR MORONS/PUNKS....

....

"IT IS A FAILURE.....and UNDESERVED -to go through to the playoff- WE HAD NO ARGUMENTS to earn the playoffs, THE USA, WITH SUBS , WITH MANY SUBS as the visiting team shows us once again what the USA is all about ....how to play the game with dignity, how to approach the sport..MExico is a horror, just terrible....A FAILURE....

......

THE USA HAS SURPASSED US ..They are better than Mexico in SOCCER ....THEY EVEN HAVE THE LUXURY OF PLAYING THEIR SUBS and KEEPING US LIVE.... I hope our coach wears the pants and resigns..He has failed as coach...."

Mexico isn't safe yet. They still have to beat New Zealand in Wellington in a playoff in order to qualify for the World Cup.

But, for now, they're alive.

Belgium and Switzerland seeded for World Cup 2014 in Brazil

Belgium and Switzerland seeded for World Cup 2014 in Brazil

Belgium and Switzerland will both be seeded for the 2014 World Cup draw, Fifa confirmed on Thursday.

But 2006 champions Italy and 2010 runners-up the Netherlands will not be among the seeds in Brazil. The Dutch do have an outside chance of being added to the seeded teams - but only if sixth-ranked Uruguay lose their qualifying play-off with Jordan.

Hosts Brazil - ranked 11th - plus the top seven teams in the Fifa world rankings make up the seeds. Spain, Germany, Argentina and Colombia are all among them but Italy, who slipped four places to joint eighth after last week's 2-2 draw with Armenia, miss out despite winning their qualifying group.

The Azzurri are ranked alongside the Netherlands, but placed below Louis van Gaal's men on current form. England rise to 10th in the rankings, but are not seeded.

Belgium secured their 2014 finals place by winning Group A ahead of Croatia, in a pool that also featured Wales and Scotland, while Switzerland finished above Iceland as Group E winners. The new Fifa rankings will also be used to work out the seeds for the European play-off draw Monday.

The 1998 World Cup winners France have slipped to 21st in the rankings and will have to beat one of the four seeded teams - Portugal, Greece, Croatia and Ukraine - if they are to reach the finals.

The rankings' emphasis on recent results rather than teams' record in major tournaments means 2010 World Cup runners-up Netherlands and 2006 winners Italy miss out on being kept apart from the other traditional powerhouses of world football.

Barring a slump down the Fifa standings for any of the three, the Netherlands, Italy and England are likely to be kept apart as high-ranked fellow European nations.

France coach Didier Deschamps, whose side have to win a two-legged play-off to make the finals after finishing second to Spain in their qualifying group, has criticised the system. "From my point of view it's not very logical,'' said the former Chelsea midfielder.

He added that it was a "double punishment" that his side were in Group I, the only European one with five rather than six teams, meaning they had two fewer matches to earn ranking points.

As well as a seed and an unseeded European qualifier, each of the World Cup groups is likely to be completed by a team from a combined Asia, Oceania and North and Central America pot and one of the unseeded African and South American qualifiers or the lowest-ranked European qualifier.

Spain remain at the top of the rankings, ahead of Germany who leapfrog Argentina to take second spot.

World Cup 2014: European nations await play-off draw

The eight European teams involved in the play-offs for a spot at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil will learn their opponents on Monday.

France, the 1998 world champions, are unseeded as one of the four lowest ranked nations in the draw.

Portugal, Greece, Croatia and Ukraine, who were runners-up to England, are the four seeds.

Sweden, Romania and Iceland are unseeded for the two-legged ties which will take place on 15 and 19 November.

The eight nations all finished second in the qualifying groups, with France, ranked 21 in the world, the runners-up to World Cup and European Championship holders Spain.

The four nations that qualify will complete a total of 13 European nations at the tournament in Brazil.

The eight European nations who remain in the hunt for a ticket to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, have learned their futures in the play-off draw, which took place at the Home of FIFA in Zurich.

Helping with the draw for the two-legged play-offs, which are set to be played on 15 November and 19 November, was Swiss veteran of two World Cups Alexander Frei.

Portugal v Sweden

Ukraine v France

Greece v Romania

Iceland v Croatia

The process saw four seeded teams in Pot 1, determined by their placing in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, each paired up with one of the sides in Pot 2.

The seeded nations were: Portugal (ranked 14), Greece (15), Croatia (18) and Ukraine (20). The unseeded teams were France (21), Sweden (25), Romania (29) and Iceland (46).

ZLATAN OR RONALDO?- Portugal v Sweden (1945 GMT)

It does seem a shame that either Cristiano Ronaldo or Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss out on next summer's World Cup. Two of the biggest egos in the game, two of the hardest shots in the game, scorers of 48 goals already this season between them (Forty-Eight!), but there's only room for one.

Who would you rather have there?

Ukraine v France (1945 GMT)

France know only too well about the misery and torment which follows a World Cup play-off defeat. The 2-1 defeat by Bulgaria 20 years ago still haunts their manager Didier Deschamps who played in midfield that evening. "It may have been 20 years ago but it still sticks in my mind," he says.

But Les Bleus can take comfort from Ukraine who have lost their last three World Cup play-offs, to Croatia (1998), Germany (2002) and Greece (2010). Indeed, Ukraine have never won in eight play-offs for either the World Cup or European Championships. "My team try not to think about what happened before," says Ukraine manager Mikhail Fomenko, which is just as well.

PLAY-OFF LATEST

A rip-roaring first half in Athens. Not many teams score against the hosts, but Romania's response to going a goal behind was immediate. Gabriel Torje's free-kick found Bogdan Stancu at the far post and the striker headed home from the zaniest of angles to level at 1-1.

It took Greece only a few seconds to nudge ahead once again, though. Dimitris Salpingidis sliding in to convert Vassilis Torossidis' first-time cross to give the Greeks a 2-1 lead in a tasty tie.

It's still goalless between Iceland and Croatia, but Croatia are dominating, which is unsurprising as Iceland have been reduced to 10 men following the sending off of Ari Skulason in the 50th minute.

It's also goalless between Ukraine and France with 31 minutes gone in that match.

PLAY-OFF LATEST - Ukraine 1-0 France

France enjoyed the majority of possession at the start of the second half but Ukraine break the deadlock with a wonderfully crafted goal. Andriy Edmar bisected the France defence and forward Roman Zozulya held off challenges to slide-foot the ball home from six yards.

France's response has been positive, with Samir Nasri going close for the visitors. Just over 20 minutes remaining at the Olympic Stadium.

Meanwhile, Greece are 3-1 ahead against Romania and have put themselves in the driving seat. Kostas Mitroglou scoring his second of the match in the 67th minute.
