The number of times England gave the ball away must be the hundreds and thousands!

Waaaaay!

Meanwhile Hodgson predictably has come out in defence of his team's performance describing it as 'good'.

That man's standards....

Argentina through, Uruguay on the prowl

As expected, Argentina overpowered the already-eliminated Paraguay on Tuesday to become the first South American side to reach the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ via the qualifying competition.

Colombia had the chance to join them but lost in Uruguay and must wait until October for another opportunity to seal their place. In beating Los Cafeteros, the Uruguayans put themselves firmly in contention for one of the three remaining automatic qualification slots, while Venezuela beat Peru in Puerto Ordaz to keep their faint play-off hopes alive and eliminate their opponents on the night.

Elsewhere Ecuador clung on to fourth after drawing in Bolivia, a result that allowed Chile, who were not in FIFA World Cup qualifying action, to stay third. FIFA.com reviews events on Matchday 16 in the South American qualifiers for Brazil 2014.

Two late goals in the space of three short minutes earned Uruguay a valuable victory in their bid to avoid a fourth consecutive play-off. La Celeste’s win was made all the more notable by the fact it was achieved without Diego Lugano, Diego Godin, Martin Caceres and Diego Forlan. The hosts worked hard to contain Colombia’s much-vaunted attack and then struck at the right time, with Cavani and Stuani both converting from close range.

Los Charruas, who had drawn their last two qualifiers at the Estadio Centenario, are now level on 22 points with Ecuador, but remain fifth by virtue of their inferior goal difference (0 to Ecuador’s +4).

The two sides face each other in a crunch game in Quito on 11 October. Speaking after Tuesday’s vital win, Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said: “We haven’t made sure of anything yet, but we’re in a better position than we were in June.”

The vanquished Colombians, who failed to score for only the third time in the current competition and had not conceded twice since losing to Argentina on Matchday 4, will now have to wait until next month to confirm their place in Brazil. To do so, however, they need only one point from their remaining two matches.

Elsewhere

Argentina suffered no such slip-up in Asuncion, where they surged to a 5-2 victory over Paraguay to book their place at Brazil 2014. Lionel Messi scored twice from the spot, with Sergio Aguero, Angel Di Maria and Maxi Rodriguez also on target as La Albiceleste ended a run of two qualifying defeats on Paraguayan soil. Jose Nunez and Roque Santa Cruz were the men on target for La Albirroja, whose remote chances of reaching a fifth successive world finals ended when Uruguay won earlier in the evening.

Ecuador went winless for a fourth consecutive game when they drew 1-1 with Bolivia in La Paz. Still to win away from their Quito stronghold, El Tricolor are now in danger of missing out on automatic qualification, something they seemed virtually assured of only a few short months ago. All that separates them from the rejuvenated Uruguayans is their superior goal difference.

After falling behind to Jaime Arrascaita’s long-range strike, Reinaldo Rueda’s side hit back through a Felipe Caicedo penalty, prompting the coach to comment afterwards: “This point could be vital.”

Venezuela stayed in the hunt with a 3-2 home defeat of Peru. Despite falling behind to a Paolo Hurtado goal, La Vinotinto held their nerve and struck back through Jose Rondon, Cesar Gonzalez – from the penalty spot – and Romulo Otero to end a run of three games without victory. The Venezuelans have just one game remaining, however, and only a slim chance of finishing fifth.

To have any chance of claiming the play-off spot, they need to win in their last outing and hope either Ecuador or Uruguay, whom they trail by three points, fail to score points in their final two games. Carlos Zambrano pulled a late goal back for the now-eliminated Peruvians, whose last finals appearance came at Spain 1982.

Qualification scenarios explained

Qualification scenarios explained

Last month's FIFA World Cup™ qualifiers saw five teams join Japan, Australia, Korea Republic, Iran and hosts Brazil at next summer's finals. Dutch and Italian fans celebrated across Europe while USA, Costa Rica and Argentina supporters were jubilant across the Atlantic Ocean. Eight more teams can join the ten qualified sides and book their place to Brazil on Friday. FIFA.com takes a look at the scenarios required for next summer's World Cup to have more than half of its final line-up decided.

Europe

It's straightforward for Belgium, who will qualify if they secure at least a draw against Croatia in Group A. Germany and Switzerland have their World Cup fate in their own hands, they will each qualify with a win over Republic of Ireland and Albania respectively. Joachim Low's side will also qualify if Sweden fail to secure three points against Austria, regardless of the Nationalmannschaft result.

The Swiss will rely on other results if they draw or lose against Albania, with one point being enough to take them to Brazil if Group E rivals Iceland do not win against Cyprus. Ottmar Hitzfeld's side could even reach Brazil with defeat, if both Iceland and Slovenia (who play Norway) fail to win their games on Friday.

2018 World Cup hosts Russia will qualify if they win in Luxembourg and Portugal lose against Israel.

England currently top the group and hold a one-point advantage over Ukraine and Montenegro with two matches left. Roy Hodgson's side face Montenegro on Friday and Poland on Tuesday and will qualify for Brazil with two Wembley victories. Ukraine entertain Poland tonight, with the visitors needing to win to keep their qualification hopes alive.

North America

Honduras will reach their third World Cup if they beat already-qualified Costa Rica and Panama draw against Mexico.

South America

Colombia have their fate in their own hands. A draw will be enough to see Radamel Falcao and co reach Brazil, while their opponents Chile will qualify with a win.

In the event of a Chile victory, and in a strange quirk of coincidence, Jorge Sampaoli's troops and Colombia could both qualify on Friday if the Ecuador-Uruguay match does not end in a draw.

On the other hand, if Uruguay win and Colombia beats Chile, both Colombia and Uruguay can book their flights to Brazil.

European World Cup qualifiers: Who can qualify for Brazil 2014?

European World Cup qualifiers: Who can qualify for Brazil 2014?

Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Bosnia-Hercegovina and Russia could become the next nations to secure automatic qualification to the 2014 World Cup.

Belgium sit five points ahead of Croatia in Group A, with two games to play. The two teams meet on 11 October, with Belgium needing to avoid defeat to make the summer trip to Brazil.

Switzerland need to beat Albania to finish top of Group E. Even if they draw, Iceland will need to thrash bottom-placed Cyprus to stand any chance of overhauling Ottmar Hitzfeld's side on goal difference at the end of the campaign.

Germany need to avoid defeat at worst against Republic of Ireland to qualify as Group C winners.

Bosnia and Greece are locked on 19 points at the top of Group G. Even if Greece do not drop points against Slovakia, Bosnia's far superior goal difference means victory next time out against Liechtenstein will all but guarantee them automatic qualification.

In an unlikely turn of events, Russia could secure top spot in Group F if they beat Luxembourg and Portugal suffer a shock loss at home to Israel.

The winners of each group qualify for the World Cup, while all bar one second-placed team (the one with the worst record against teams ranked first, third, fourth and fifth) will reach the play-offs.

Italy and the Netherlands have qualified for the World Cup, with second place up for grabs in seven of the nine groups.

Group A

Belgium and Croatia are the runaway leaders and the only teams who can finish in the top two. They meet in the next round of matches, with Belgium needing to avoid defeat away from home to guarantee top spot.

Group B

With Italy already guaranteed World Cup qualification, the race for second place remains tight. Bulgaria - who possess a significant goal difference advantage over their direct rivals - are a point above Denmark in second with two games remaining and will stay in control if they beat Armenia .

Denmark play group winners Italy at home. If Bulgaria win and they lose, Bulgaria will secure second place, while a draw in the same circumstances will require a huge swing in goal difference in the final fixture.

Armenia and Czech Republic are long shots to finish in a potential play-off spot, with both sides locked on nine points. To stand any hope of making it, the former must beat Bulgaria and the latter bottom-placed Malta.

Group C

Behind group leaders Germany, the race for second place involves Sweden, Austria and the Republic of Ireland.

Sweden are three points ahead of Austria, who they host in the next round of games. If the home side is victorious, they will guarantee second place. Ireland travel to probable group winners Germany. Lying six points off Sweden with an inferior goal difference, they are major underdogs to qualify.

Group D

Netherlands have comfortably secured top spot, but the battle for second is up for grabs. Second-placed Hungary travel to the table toppers, knowing a surprise victory could see them into the play-offs with a game to spare.

Turkey and Romania are a point behind Hungary after eight games played, with Turkey boasting a considerably superior goal difference to Romania.

They look certain to take advantage of any dropped points from Hungary, as Turkey travel to also-rans Estonia and Romania make the trip to bottom-placed Andorra.

Group E

Leaders Switzerland can qualify for Brazil if they win away to Albania. The teams sitting second to fifth are separated by only three points with two games remaining.

Second-placed Iceland host bottom-placed Cyprus, while third-placed Slovenia and fourth-placed Norway face each other. No run of results can see a nation guarantee themselves a potential play-off place.

Group F

Leaders Russia and second-placed Portugal are separated by a point with two games to play. Both face fixtures against minnows, with Russia travelling to Luxembourg - who beat Northern Ireland 3-2 in their previous qualifier - and Portugal hosting Israel.

A victory for Israel will see them close to within two points of Portugal, with a game to play.

Group G

Bosnia-Hercegovina and Greece are locked on 19 points, and are guaranteed to finish in the top two places with two games to play.

Bosnia possess a far superior goal difference. They host Liechtenstein next, knowing victory will all but secure automatic qualification no matter what Greece do against Slovakia.

Group H

If England beat Montenegro at Wembley and Poland beat Ukraine, then Roy Hodgson's side will be all but qualified for the World Cup. England would be three points ahead of Poland with a superior goal difference.

Moldova will be hoping to beat minnows San Marino to condemn them to bottom place.

Group I

Spain and France are guaranteed to finish in the top two places.

Spain, who are top on goal difference, need four points from their remaining two games at home to Belarus and Georgia to guarantee qualification. France - who sit out the next round of qualifiers - finish their campaign at home to Finland.

Belgium lead their crucial World Cup qualifier against Croatia 2-0 thanks to Romelu Lukaku's double in Zagreb.

The move for Lukaku's second goal (above) started with the powerful striker picking the ball up in his own half.

A penny for Jose Mourinho's thoughts.
