A nursing assistant yesterday confessed to murdering eight of her newborn babies because 'she did not want any more children'.

Dominique Cottrez, 45, the mother of two grown-up daughters, is facing life in jail for the crimes which took place over 20 years in France.

She 'systematically' strangled the babies after refusing to visit a doctor for contraception and then giving birth in secret.

Arrested: Nursing assistant Dominique Cottrez, 45, has been charged with the murder of eight of her own newborn babies. Her husband Pierre-Marie has been freed without charge

All of the children, who were killed between 1988 and around 2007, ended up in black bin liners, and police have not ruled out finding more.

Despite completing eight pregnancies, Cottrez has insisted that her husband, Pierre-Marie, 47, knew nothing about them.

He was accused of concealing the corpses and failing to report the crimes, but the charges were dropped because of lack of evidence and he has been released.

'The sky is falling on his head, he told us,' said prosecutor Eric Vaillant. 'He told us he was absolutely not aware his wife was pregnant.'

His wife, who weighs around 20st, is expected to be kept in custody until a trial next year.

Mr Vaillant said: 'She has been charged with eight counts of wilfully killing minors under 15. She admitted suffocating the babies at birth.

'When she became aware she was pregnant she decided she did not want any more children, and did not go to see a doctor for contraception.

'Her first delivery had gone badly and there were clearly problems thereafter.'

He said it was only through 'sheer chance' that the remains of two of the babies were found on Saturday in the garden of a house the Cottrez family owned in Villers-au-Tertre, near Lille, up until 1991.

The new owners were digging a duck pond when they came across human remains, which had been placed in hermetically sealed bags.

Police were called in and six more bodies were found in the family's new house half-a-mile away.

Cottrez was said to have been able to hide her pregnancies before giving birth alone.

After confessing tearfully, she is to undergo psychological tests to evaluate the degree of criminal responsibility.

Cottrez and her husband were described by a neighbour as 'pillars of the local community'.

They lived in the village with one of their grown-up daughters and a young grandson.

'Dominique is a lovely women,' said the neighbour. 'She cared for her father until his recent death.

'She's a stout woman, originally from a farming family, so it may be she was able to conceal her pregnancies.'

The tragedy is not the first such case in France. In March Celine Lesage, 38, was given a 15-year prison sentence after admitting that she had killed six of her newborn babies, in Rouen.

Last year Veronique Courjault, 42, was jailed for eight years for killing three children.

I saw this on HLN this afternoon. That is absolutely atrocious. D:

The ending bit was really intriguing to me. How in the world do you only get 15 years for killing six children? Are the laws that much more lax in France? Someone explain this to me.

No, because it's not abortion. She didn't kill them until after she had given birth to them.

...Wait, what? I'm confused at what you're trying to say. Can you please elaborate?

That is just sick. She could have given them away!

^^ That doesn't make sense. This wasn't a matter of whether she aborted them or not, because she didn't. Abortion is when the babies are killed while still in the womb. This woman gave birth to these children, and they were outside of the womb and alive when she killed them. That is MURDER. There's no two ways about it.

^ I know, right? Adoption is always a better alternative than killing innocent babies.

She's obviously never heard of a condom. Or abortion. Or adoption.

The abbortion opposers are going to use this for their benefit.

If anything people FOR abortion will use this for their benefit.

yes, that's like so obvious you didn't have to mention.

that woman is clearly all fucked up in the head.

The point to opposition is making is that abbortion is murder and that there is no diffrence. Naturally there is...

Really?:dozey:

Agreed.

I believe we all understand what the difference is between pro-life and pro-choice, but as I've been trying to tell you, this isn't about that, so I don't see why you keep bringing it up. At any rate, I'd rather not have this turn into a pro-life vs. pro-choice discussion, because it will get messy.

Again, my bottom line is that the abortion opposers will point out that it's as cruel as abbortion. And it's already happening.

Sorry for turning this in to a abbortion discussion :shame:

I don't get your reasoning behind that, but OK, whatever.

Hey, it's no big deal. :)

So this have made it to the news even in US :shocked2: Well, here everyone is shocked but we kinda are 'used to' it by now sadly... it's been a few cases in here discovered since the Courjault case (which happened in my city...:/) But the other cases where with women suffering from 'pregnancy denial' (dunno how to translate it in english), so more/less considered as psychological state of mind/disease... though this one is a bloody cold blood murderer...! I can't even begin to imagine the trauma for her kids (how do you live thinking 'why hasn't she killed me?') . For the husband, I have doubts... I don't understand why they released him so soon and didn't even begin to press charges...

Anyway, it's horrible.

Well, it sounds unlikely, and I have my own reservations about how involved the husband was, but it is possible. Likely, no. Possible, yes.

I think it's time for you to "abort"...........................

Spain isn't much different...

as when we have shocking endless punishment that really are 'fake.

say put someone in prision for 150 years for have put 5 bombs, but at the end they will only do 30 years in prision even when they killed 30 people or more and injured 300 others. at times they even get less, as doing 'social/community works' and good behaviour allow them to get off jail before the 30 years.

back on topic, i don't understand why there are so many horrible cases today, as men abusing their daughters and having dozen kids with them, or parents not schooling their kids and make them live in caves.

don't we are suppoused to be better prepared and be less 'animal'-like?

Don't forget women still being executed in countries like Iran for having sex outside of marriage..................... :dozey:

It does make you wonder whether we are in 2110 or 1110!:dozey:

15/20/30 years in prison and after ? what will happen to this woman ? Jail is not the final solution in my opinion. She has to have a prison sentence but this woman has apparently some psychologic disorders. She needs to be help and not just thrown in a cell. I'm not excusing what she did (I even can't understand) and she have to "paid" but going to jail until the end of her life will certainly not make her a better person.

Anyway that's a horrible story and I can't imagine that she killed 8 babies. this woman is mad !

you are right.

i think here, you get psychologically tested in cases like that one, and if it says you are 'mad' you go to psychiatric centre, were you get treatment and spend the prision sentence there.

but anyways it can be reduced as the other cases i said before.

i don't know how it goes there.

:stunned:

That bothers me. Really, it does.
