Starting today. Who thinks 6 weeks for a cricket world cup is obscenely long?

Odds for cheating smear headlines before the end of the competition?

Cricket World Cup: Teams set for start of tournament

The 2011 World Cup begins in the subcontinent on Saturday, with one of the most closely fought competitions in the event's 36-year history predicted.

The 14 teams are divided into two groups of seven and after a round-robin section the top four from each group will go through to the quarter-finals.

Co-hosts India and Bangladesh contest the opening match in Mirpur (0830 GMT).

Defending champions Australia face Zimbabwe on Monday and England begin against the Netherlands on Tuesday.

The 2011 tournament, which takes place over the next six weeks in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, is seen as pivotal to the future of the 50-over game, which some believe is under threat because of the enormous popularity of Twenty20 cricket.

World Cup shock: Wankhede Stadium fails fire inspection

Wankhede Stadium, venue for the Cricket World Cup final on April 2, has not met fire safety standards, the chief fire officer for Mumbai said on Friday. "We will soon write a letter to the MCA (Mumbai Cricket Association) stating there is a need to comply with fire safety norms at the stadium. Once they abide by the terms we would again conduct an inspection," chief fire officer Uday Tatkare was quoted as saying. "The team has found that the newly renovated stadium has many loopholes in its fire safety mechanism. The stadium must be in compliance with the fire safety conditions," Tatkare said.

Tatkare was on leave for the weekend and did not receive calls when Reuters tried to contact him on the phone. No other Mumbai fire brigade officials were ready to elaborate.

The stadium also failed an inspection by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in December but earlier this week was given the go-ahead for its three World Cup matches starting on March 13.

"Among the mandatory fire apparatus are ... water hydrants, internal riser system for the stands, no-smoking indicators, fire alarms and extinguishers have to be installed," a Mumbai fire officer said on condition of anonymity.

6 weeks is far too long for a competition that in all honesty hasn't ever lit up the cricketing world let alone the sporting world. Been more famous for it's controversy than anything hasn't it. Who can forget the Bob Woolmer death and the sham investigation which followed it??!

who cares abt the world cup

amazingly enough no1 is interested in it here anymore

:laugh3:

cricket is probably my favourite sport. it is the sport i grew up loving and is in my blood. but 2 days into the world cup i'm already bored and over it. wake me up when its semis time.

would it not be Pakistan's best victory if they lifted the WC without those three top players?

WAY too long and with too many pointless matches.:dozey:

pakistani's have always been alleged of doing loads of things but that doesn't mean they are all true

take reverse swing when only pakistani players could do it then it was ball tampering but when English players learned it then it was an art:dozey:

every1 does it but only stupid pakistani players are always caught

and as for the WC no1 really cares anymore

I really don't mind cricket. In fact I really like the sport especially test cricket. I'm very unenthusiastic for the one day 50 overs game but 20/20 cricket is fantastic. But the 50 overs one dayers - I think they should be scrapped.

I think guys tend to like it more because it's played in school, other people enjoying it is great and I hope they enjoy the World Cup but it has no significance at all to me.

i'm a bit like you. there's nothing like a classic test match. the momentum changes, the brilliant spells of bowling and those great long innings. i used to really love one day cricket but recently they've brought in a million changes with the powerplays and stuff like that and i find it hard to follow. i have a love hate relationship with T20 cricket. i love it how it has basically saved the game but i hate it how batting orientated it is.

and LOL@ England!! never seen a team be so good at test match and so terrible at one day but then be pretty great at T20......

England v Australia at Edgbaston 2005 was one of the best sporting events I ever witnessed. For it to come down to just a 2 run victory after 4 days was simply unbelievable. Something that one day cricket will never offer. Test match cricket gripped the whole nation which one day has never.

The problem with England is that they have been going non-stop since October time with the Ashes warm-up matches. They are getting tired and injured
