The 8th Mixtape Exchange (Links in first post)

Woo for the first time in a while my original reviewer actually reviewed my tape!

Ok, here is my (extremely belated) review!

Track 01: This is a great opening track. The sirens and guitar build up at the start, which gives it a sort of car chase feel. I recognize his voice… can’t pick it though. This sort of sounds like one of those 80’s Beach Boys type bands. I know it probably isn’t, but y’know. Similar style. The song altogether it really feel good; it’s got a good beat, reminds me off summer! The bit at the end sounds like Apparatjik, with the phone calls an’ all. Awesome.

(Drawing) Rings around the World by the Super Furry Animals from the album of the same name

Track 02: It starts off a lot more gentler than the first song. It fits in well to take it down a notch. I really love this one. It sounds like Headless Heroes with the guitar. It’s incredible, just crazy, that guitar. I like how they’re really only using that one instrument apart from voice. It’s a great track. I’m really into this kind of music, so I’d like to hear more of this group!

Sun Kil Moon from last years album Admiral Fell Promises.

Track 03: For a moment I thought this was Chelsea Dagger by the Fratellis, but no. This is better than that. Another feel good track! The drums are pretty cool… the lyrics are quite cute. The only issue is that I thought it should have gone for a lot longer than it did. Don’t why, but oh well. Impressed so far!

Trains To Brazil by the Guillemots, from their first album.

Track 04: This song sounds hill-billy-ish! :awesome: That’s pretty funny. The style is really like Bob Dylan, but you probably already knew that. In fact, all the songs you’ve chosen so far have fit together really well. They all have the same kind of thing going, but all different.

Sufjan Stevens's cover of The Lakes Of Canada.

Track 05: What’s this? No guitar? Piano? No… The lyrics are hilarious. A really very amusing song. I enjoyed it! The piano and big beats remind of Queen’s style. I don’t really know what else to say about it, but I did like it very much. Actually, it’s more like Fairytale of New York, by the Pogues. Yes. That’s a better comparison. That’s not a bad thing, incidentally.

John Grant's Queen Of Denmark, from the album of the same title.

Track 06: Oooo, I loved this one. The drums, oh the drums…. I like…. It’s one of those songs you absolutely have to turn up so loud you can’t hear anything else. Yeeeeah… *melts* …. wow….. wish I was somewhere in London. Cough cough *Guy’s bed* cough cough. What? I didn’t say anything. Anyways, the song. Yes, it’s excellent. Simply fantastic. Bfewuohfewpj.

Kirsty MacColl's cover of Billy Bragg's A New England.

Track 07: Hmmm… suggestive. Now this is very Apparatjik, the heavy breathing and all. It’s really funky (he he - it’s funky!). Space. That’s what it reminds me of! Space! It sounds really retro and sort of out of this world. Do you know what I mean?

Tour De France by the werk of Kraft.

Track 08: The singer’s voice in this song sounds so familiar… his name’s on the tip of my tongue. Sort of a slow song, really. The guitar I find similar to Maroon 5. The sound of it gets sort of soaring with strings at the end of the song. There’s something really creepy about it. Do you know what I mean? Especially with the lyrics. Definitely worth another listen.

Gene's From Georgia To Osaka, Gene were a band from the 90s "britpop" scene which actually were good.

Track 09: I like the start of this song. In fact, I like all of this song. I just know it, I’m gonna have it my head for the rest of the day  But anyway, the beat is really catchy, the little xylophone things in the background are cute. It’s like The Pierces! Love it.

Haiti by the Arcade Fire, owing to the rule that every mixtape must have Arcade Fire in.

Track 10: Starts with a strong beat. The laughter, I admit, is pretty creepy. Not sure if I like the ending of this song. It would have been better if they actually finished the end, rather than just fading it out. The rest of it’s ok, but not really my cup of tea

A Radiohead B-Side, India Rubber.

Track 11: Hmmm… not sure if I know who this is. That voice… so familiar… Lovers In Japan (Osaka Sun Mix), our lovely Coldplay. :wacky: I love this song.

Good :)

Track 12: Randy Newman. Gotta be. I must say I’ve never heard the song though. I love his music. Was it off a soundtrack? That’s usually where hear it. I always see him as having innocent music. Probably because the first time I heard him was in Toy Story! It’s a very nice song. Not sure how well it fits in with Lovers, but maybe I should just listen to it again…

Gosh this is a long mixtape!

It's from his last album (Harps & Angels)

Track 13: Liberian Girl, Michael Jackson. This song reminds me of a forest. I really love it, absolute classic. It’s so mysterious, I think it has to be one of my favourite MJ songs. Beautiful. Love live the King.

Indeed, RIP Jacko

Track 14: Haunting piano! Ooooo, creeeeeepy! And the voice that joins it is incredible. So mysterious and wonderfully wonderful. I don’t know what else to say! It’s just beautiful. Ok, so far I’m quite impressed with this mix. But this one has to be my favourite (apart from track 11! :awesome:). The end is really soaring, sort of Apparatjik –y. The silence at the end adds to the song. I love it. SILENCE IS MAGIC

Insurgentes (Mexico) by Steven Wilson, of Porcupine Tree, from his solo-album.

Track 15: NOORRWAAAAAAAAY!! I love this song. And I wish I could go to Norway, despite what @The Final Track says  I love that it’s really odd how it goes up and down in key every now and then. But this is a very, very catchy song, and I will definitely look further into the artist. They sort of sound like the Fleet Foxes. I loved it. Definitely a highlight for me so far!

You got the Beach House!

Track 16: Now this sounds like The Pierces. At least it did at the start. So many of these tracks are male singers. Not that it’s a bad thing, most of my music in male dominated. This song makes me want to go out and ride a horse somewhere. So we’ve had a song about Norway and a song about Paraguay. Do I see a pattern emerging…?

Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits) - Postcards from Paraguay, he's made some rather nice solo material

Track 17: Ha! I knew it! From Russia With Love! Great movie, great movie… Great soundtrack, great everything. I knew there was a theme going on here. Now we’ve had Norway, Paraguay, Russia. What’s next? Oh, I love the ending of it. So up lifting. Love it!

Matt Monro's 1963 single From Russia With Love.

Track 18: SPAIN! Spain. I haven’t heard this one before, but it’s lovely and quiet. I think it would go very well in a soundtrack (is it in a soundtrack already?). The lyrics are quite depressing really. “So it’s to the gallows at the long lost kingdom of life”. Oh yes… makes me feel all melancholy. This will be very good for inspirational writing. Can’t wait to look further into this artist.

The Decemberists's The Kingdom of Spain, b-side to Sixteen Military Wives.

Track 19: Well that quite a jump. From lovely peaceful to almost ACDC style. Actually, this song is pretty good. Strong bass lines, crazy guitar riffs. Yeah, it’s alright. I don’t like it as much as some of the other songs, but it fits in quite well in the mixtape.

Cold Turkey by Mr Lennon

Track 20: I think this is a good song to turn up really loud and dance around in your underpants to. Not that I did. No really, I didn’t :shifty: Ahem, anyways… It’s really catchy, it’s quite 90’s. I like it. I mean, I don’t love it, but it’s alright. It’s catchiness is too catchy. Now THIS is what I will have in my head for the rest of the day.   That’s what I’m doing right now. But not in my underpants. The lyrics are pretty funny. I don’t know if they’re supposed to be funny, but I find them funny.

Vietnam by New Order, from the Warchild Hope charity album

Track 21: Yay! We made it! And what a starter to a song!! Woo!! That guitar is probably some of the best air guitar music I’ve ever heard. Fantastic! I think you chose the final song very well. It has quite a different genre to everything else, and even though it was quite long it was good to finish it off with a beat –y track like this. I actually went back and listened to the start of the song a couple of times, it’s just fantastic!

Around The World by the Chilis :)

Highlights: 2, 14, 18.

I like the bits you threw in about the different countries  That was funny.

Overall, I really liked the mixtape. It had a big mixture of different genres, but all the songs worked really well together. And I liked the little bit of Coldplay in the middle there

The only criticism I have is that is was perhaps a little bit too long. I think maybe next time try to make it shorter – maybe even somewhere between 50 and 70 minutes. That said, I still really enjoyed it.

Thank you for putting so much time and effort into making it for me. It’s clear you put in a lot of thought into it. And I do sincerely apologize for it being so dreadfully late! :whip: Shame on me.

Thanks again!

Sorry for making it too long :(

Nice theme, Dave!

Here's my exceptionally late review, as I promised.

1. Low female voice. I quite like it, something about gypsies and freedom? Has a hopeful feel to it, I quite like it. Nice opening, too.

2. This song is also kind of hopeful sounding. The singer's voice sounds almost like Thom Yorke if he tried singing well. :P Love the guitar solo at around 2:50 in. One of my favorite songs; I like how it's kind of relaxing and exciting at the same time

3. This one had kind of whispery vocals. The song minus the vocals actually reminds me a lot of the really early Coldplay stuff, like For You. The acoustic guitar in the back is really nice too. Overall a pretty song, I'm very curious to see who it's by.

4. Much faster-moving song. I like it, the singer sounds a bit like Harry McVeigh from White Lies mixed with Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys. The ending kind of sounds like something The Beatles would appreciate.

5. Another female singer. She almost sounds like Susanne Sundfør, but with a less powerful voice. Motivating song though. It sounds like it would easily fit into a movie when a girl loses her love.

I think of things like that. :|

:P

6. Much different change of tone with this song. More bass-y, angry, and serious. I love it. I feel like I've heard this song before, maybe it was in a movie or on a commercial or something? Anyway. This is another one of my favorites. I can't really make out the chorus, but it's super catchy. :wacky:

7. This is another one that sounds familiar. I really like this one too, it's really addicting. Probably my most played on the whole tape. :wacky: The song sounds almost like something Radiohead would have played earlier in their career.

8. Wasn't as keen on this song, but it was still good. Wasn't expecting country. It's like a country/light rock mix. :P

9. Very simple song, just a bit of acoustic guitar and singing. Very nice though.

10. Was a bit boring until it picked up some more, but when it did, I really liked it. The chorus is going to be stuck in my head for a while. :p

11. I like this one. Another good singer. The lyrics are really depressing, but the song's tone doesn't really feel sad. :P I really want to know who this is. :wacky:

12. Another one I like. Quiet and peaceful. I like the synths at around 1:50 as well. This guy has a nice voice too; really relaxing to listen to.

13. Good closer. Kind of a country-ish song again, except that this one has a nice sing a long part. :cheesy:

Anyways, this is my first review so sorry if it's not to descriptive. :uhoh:

Overall it was an awesome mixtape. I really liked songs 2, 4, 6, 7, and 11.

Thank you very much for your hard work in putting this together! I can't wait to see who you are. :sneaky:

when's the next mixtape exchange? i'd love to give it a go

I have like 5 other songs I meant to put on the mixtape and then forgot. :awesome:

I have a feeling this whole mixtape business will become rather addicting. :wacky:

It IS. You just keep thinking "ohh I should've put that song in!!"

And by the time we get to the next one, I'll probably forget those songs again. :P

it's a great idea, i'm definitely putting my name down for the next one anyway

^ Yeah, you should! It's quite fun. :nice: Be on the lookout for announcements on that, say, probably September. We try not to have them too often; that way, they won't become boring.

MINE !

Here's my exceptionally late review, as I promised.

1. Low female voice. I quite like it, something about gypsies and freedom? Has a hopeful feel to it, I quite like it. Nice opening, too.

I was worried you'd know this song because it's an old one. It's Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac (a band that you're parents probably listened to when they were younger :P) I'm really quite into them lately and really wanted to put them in to show that they're timeless really. So I'm glad that it kinda worked out !

2. This song is also kind of hopeful sounding. The singer's voice sounds almost like Thom Yorke if he tried singing well. :P Love the guitar solo at around 2:50 in. One of my favorite songs; I like how it's kind of relaxing and exciting at the same time

You were lucky here. Seconds after I sent in the tape I noticed that the song was still in there when I thought I had put another song in there. I wanted to change it but didn't want to bother the organiser :P But good that it wasn't such a bad thing after all. It's Midlake

3. This one had kind of whispery vocals. The song minus the vocals actually reminds me a lot of the really early Coldplay stuff, like For You. The acoustic guitar in the back is really nice too. Overall a pretty song, I'm very curious to see who it's by.

Ray LaMontagne! I think I've put this song in every mixtape. It's just such an atmospheric song. I can imagine myself sitting in an empty flat drinking wine, and singing along being all depressed and such :laugh3:. When I heard it live, I felt goosebumps everywhere. He's great!

4. Much faster-moving song. I like it, the singer sounds a bit like Harry McVeigh from White Lies mixed with Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys. The ending kind of sounds like something The Beatles would appreciate.

This band i Okkervil River. Not all their stuff is as great as the rest, but once you get into them you'll be hooked. I have this selections of songs by them that I listen to like almost every day. Definately check out 'For real', 'Another radio song' and 'Our live's not a movie or maybe'. Great tunes.

5. Another female singer. She almost sounds like Susanne Sundfør, but with a less powerful voice. Motivating song though. It sounds like it would easily fit into a movie when a girl loses her love.

I think of things like that. :|

:P

Another song which I kinda regretted putting in there. Not that it's not a good song, but it's kinda not representive of my musical taste or anything. But it brought diversity in my tape I guess :P

6. Much different change of tone with this song. More bass-y, angry, and serious. I love it. I feel like I've heard this song before, maybe it was in a movie or on a commercial or something? Anyway. This is another one of my favorites. I can't really make out the chorus, but it's super catchy. :wacky:

Phew! Took a big risk with this one. It's one of my favourite bands, but their music is a bit harder than the usual stuff I listen to. This one is kinda in the middle and I'm really glad you liked it because it's a great song. I don't think it's in a comercial though (at least not that I know of). Anyways, if you love this song you're in for a treat. It's Kashmir, a danish band that has been around for a long time and there older and newer stuff is all very very good. Be sure to check them out (start with the album Trespasser and Zitilities)

7. This is another one that sounds familiar. I really like this one too, it's really addicting. Probably my most played on the whole tape. :wacky: The song sounds almost like something Radiohead would have played earlier in their career.

Cherry Ghost - A month of mornings. This is probably one of the most underestimated band ever. I like to promote them because they're sooo good. A lot of diversity in their music and this one is indeed totally addicting. Listen to it when you're walking. I dare you to not nod your head :P especially in the middle part when the drums come in.

8. Wasn't as keen on this song, but it was still good. Wasn't expecting country. It's like a country/light rock mix. :P

Well it just was a hard pick. I wanted to put a David Gray song in it and it was sooo hard to chose one :laugh3: I just took one of his most recent ones because his earlier work is more experimental.

9. Very simple song, just a bit of acoustic guitar and singing. Very nice though.

Bon Iver & St. Vincent. Again, I wanted to put a Bon Iver song in there and it was hard to pick. I think there aren't many people on here who have not yet listened to their album so I picked one that wasn't on there and still hauntingly beautiful.

10. Was a bit boring until it picked up some more, but when it did, I really liked it. The chorus is going to be stuck in my head for a while. :p

A band that I recently discovered: City And Colour. The first time I heard it I had the same reaction but for some reason, you can't stop listening to it. It's quite addicting after a few listens though so be careful :p

11. I like this one. Another good singer. The lyrics are really depressing, but the song's tone doesn't really feel sad. :P I really want to know who this is. :wacky:

A band I desperately want to see live! The Jezabels. They have made 3 EPs so far and I can't name a single song I don't like. They're soooo good. And on their way to becoming bigger and bigger. So be a hipster and become a fan of them now so that you'll be able to say: I was a fan before they were mainstream

12. Another one I like. Quiet and peaceful. I like the synths at around 1:50 as well. This guy has a nice voice too; really relaxing to listen to.

Such a sad little song. Every time I listen to it I get all emotional for some reason :P It's David Hopkins. Not that you'll ever know him though. I tried to find more of his stuff but I can't find any. Such a shame

13. Good closer. Kind of a country-ish song again, except that this one has a nice sing a long part. :cheesy:

It's about my country hooray! Quite depressing eh :p Ah well. It's our Belgian pride at the moment. It's Milow

Anyways, this is my first review so sorry if it's not to descriptive. :uhoh:

Overall it was an awesome mixtape. I really liked songs 2, 4, 6, 7, and 11.

You did a great job with this mixtape, thank you so much!

Don't worry, they'll all probably stay on my iPod, and I'm definitely checking some of them out. Definitely Kashmir. :cheesy:

The funny thing is that my dad was a huge Fleetwood Mac fan, so I thought the music sounded a bit familiar.

Thanks again! :awesome:

i'll keep my eyes open for it then :)

I saw too that some people mentioned things about an album cover, is that compulsory? and how many tracks would people tend to put on a mixtape?

Ok so, sorry for being so late but had some trouble with the internet and such and yes I admit, I'm very very lazy too... But! It's 3 at night now so the ideal time to get cracking! I'm not very good at this though...

1) Atmospheric song, with a standard beat. Kinda dreamy with a weird but addicting atmosphere to it. Great opener

2) Intermezzo with kids talking, old piano in the background and some xylophone. To be honest, I really like the piano in the background, but it's kinda.... I don't know, not really a song or something.

3) Lullaby-esque guitar song, great vocals. A lot of emotion in the voice.

4) One of my favourites: great guitar song with matchign vocals and quite catchy without it being a pop song or something like that. Great song

5) Electric guitars. A lot darker than the other songs. Kind of a mood breaker because of that. Like the harder parts though.

6) Guitar and saloon like piano, with a song with vocals with voice effects. Sound old but probably isn't.

7) Another intermezzo, with guitar this time. Nice little tune

8) Another one of my favourites. Electric guitars that sometimes kick in to give it this extra kick. Another great piece of a vocalist with a lot of emotion in his singing.

9) Love this son! It start slow, slowly kinda builds up to this catchy rythm. I could see myself listening to this osng regularly.

10) Slow song, reminds me of something Irish or something. Really calm and a cool variation in the use of instruments

11) More electronic sound than the other songs. Not really into electro, but for some reason, it fits wonderfully well in this mixtape.

12) Live version of Mansion on the hill. I can't really remember by who it was, but I know it because of the cover by David Gray. IYou're probably gonna hit me but I liked the David Gray version better.

13) Off all the song that have electric influences I liked this one the best. Again: the atmosphere... I have almost no atmospheric songs in my music library and you're teaching me how it should be done.

14) Sound like a mix between The Cure and Depeche Mode or something.

Overall, it's not really the music I listen to every day, but the point of this whole thing is broadening your musical taste. And well, some of my prejudices were completely wrong about this kind of music. This tape has this awesome atmosphere to it. It's kinda hard to put my finger on it but it's like this whole trip I underwent and I really quite liked it eventhough I didn't like every song that much. So great job on the tape whoever you might be!

You did a great job with this mixtape, thank you so much!

The funny thing is that my dad was a huge Fleetwood Mac fan, so I thought the music sounded a bit familiar.

Yeah Kashmir is awesome. Trespasser is their most recent work and just full of these catchy songs. It's really great! Their older work (Like Zitilities) is often softer, but still awesome! Let me know if you like them or not

Yeah Fleetwood Mac is old skool. But they're timeless. I love them. Your father has a good taste!

i'll keep my eyes open for it then :)

I saw too that some people mentioned things about an album cover, is that compulsory? and how many tracks would people tend to put on a mixtape?

An album cover isn't required, but it's a nice touch if you do decide to have one for it. People find creative things to do with their tapes sometimes. At any rate, what is required is that when you make the tape, you need to remove all the original song information. That way, the listener can't be influenced.

Ehhh. I'd say it's more about time length than amount of tracks. The lengths generally are at the discretion of the mixtape maker. Different people like different lengths. A generic guesstimate of length would be around an hour. The one I just made for this one was about 62 minutes or something, and I had 17 tracks. It's all about balance, really.

Really, the more you participate in the exchanges, the more you learn about how to make them. :nice:

Hey!!! I'm Louise and I'm your mixtape maker!!!:nice:

As I treat the mixtape as an ensemble I don't have long commentary on each songs but I put some few remarks.

I’m so sorry this is just way too late!!!!!

So the mixtape was really good, and i can definitely sense a theme here!

”that teenage feeling” the whole tape made me think of a high school proom from the late 80’s maybe 90’s! The albume artwork freaks me a bit out though but thats probably just because i used to be a braces face!

some of this is stuff that i’d usualy not listen to, my taste in music isn’t very cheerful, but these are relly good old song and you can feel the quality of some of them if you know what i mean!

Im glad….. i need more of this kind music!

Oh and one more thing the tracks weren’t listed 1,2 ,3 etc. They where all named 0 so i’m not sure that it’s all in the right order

Ok so here it goes….

Track 1(atleast i think it is :P)

I LOVE NIRVANA!!!! But I haven’t listened to them for a very long time… a good opening track, thank you

Track 2

Nope i don’t mind The Rolling Stones either, dont listen to them much but i recognise his voice☺ i believe this song is called Under My Thumb which is not hard to asume from the chorus either

You're right about the band and the song. I'm not listening them often but my dad used to over-listen The Rolling Stones when I was young so it's good sometime to remember old times.

Track 3

Now i don't know this one!! I really like the opening with the piano! It’s a cute tune and it sounds kind of old but for all i know it might just be made that way! I have the feeling this track is called Teenager

Yes, not really old. The band was created in the 00's if i'm right.

Track 4

I really love this track<3<3<3 its amazing! I like the lyrics too! I dont know it but my guess is that its maybe something along the lines of The Gentle Waves or something!

I'm so glad you like it. It's Eighties fan by Camera Obscura. One of my favorite band :dazzled:. It sounds a bit retro and the singer voice is wonderful. If you like it you have to try listen more from them. You won't regret.

Track 5

I’v heard this song in the movie my best friends girl, but i havent really payed any atention to it before i just recognised the chorus! Its really catchy and I’d love to know who it's by:)

Track 6

Metric? I dont really know them that well, but i’d love to look more into them!!!! Thanks<3

Apart this songs and some other I don't know Metric that much but I find it will fit well in the mixtape.

Track 7

Raelly cool opening:D oOoOOOOOOooo its getting better! I woke up in love this morning…… just got a sudden urge to stand up and do a silly dance or something!!

Me likey!

Yeah really catchy and the beginning is just :wacky:

Track 8

It’s a good song! Not my favorite on the tape but not bad at all, don’t know what else to say! Just not really my thing

XTC is also one of my favorite band. So much craziness in their songs but it's alway good.

Track 9

Oh i know this guitar!!!!i guess it’s well known and i’v picked it up somewhere☺ i like it…i wanna hold you tight, get teenage kicks right trough the night!

Track 10

a long time ago we used to be friends but i havent thought of you lately at all,………., come on now sugar bring it on bring it on yeah just remember me when…..we used to be friend a long time ago, we used to be friends!

Haha! The Veronica Mars intro<3 i only know it from the tv-show and its fun to actually be able to hear the whole song! Its really catchy and i used to have this song (or at least the chorus) stuck in my head all the time<3

I'm not sure I made a good choice with this song but now it's done so I assume it. I've been obsess with this song when Veronica Mars was on TV. And it's the only song from The Dandy Warhol that I know, I never try to listen something else than this song. :\

Track 11

I like this! It’s got a pretty cool and slightly crazy sound! Not something that i listen alot to though but definitely good!

Track 12

It’s got alot of the same sound as track 11! Is it the same band? No maybe not! anyway again i like it:)

It's not the same band as the last track. This one is from LCD Soundsystem.

Track 13

Love <3 i like this alot ,their sound gets to me! a good track to end the mixtape:)

Sweet song to finish. Broken Social Scene - Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl

Well done!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for making this tape for me<3 and again i’m so sorry for beeing so terribly lat:(

Sometimes i just hate myself………

Cant wait for the tracklist!

First of all it's Ok for the delay, don't hate yourself for that :)

I'm really really happy you like it because it's far to be perfect but I really worked on this mixtape. I didn't have many informations about your tastes so I've decided to made something I like. I tried to make a good balance between old songs and recent ones and made a cosiness atmosphere, not too much agressive, and with a touch of fun/craziness in the music.

And of course you find easily the theme of that mixtape and I'm sorry for that ugly artwork. I put it to be sure to remove all the originals artwork. I'll try to make something better next time.
