Okay, so all apologies off the back, and thanks a ton for for re-uploading the mix after I couldn't get through on rapidshare. Though I had plenty of time on day 1, by the time I got the mix I had essays and projects due each of the following days. However, now it's easter break, I've just had maybe 15 hours of sleep, and I'm raring to appease mah partna wit a wevu. I've listened to it three times already, and right off the back I'm gonna say it might be the best tape I've been given. :D

1. "Living is easy with eyes closed...." Strawberry Fields, but an interesting remix (not like a techno remix...just a different mix, like the Beatles may have done it themselves). This is actually really cool and a great start to the tape. Kudos!

Strawberry fields (take 1). We used this for some project at uni in our musicology lesson (I only studied for a year though and musicology was just a minor.....a shame, because I loved it)...it's been the only Beatles song on my laptop until some weeks ago haha....I prefer this take to the official one and I thought it'd be a good song to start with (and I see: it worked! Yayyy)

2. The guitar rythm to this had me thinking 'Ob-la-di ob-la-da' at the start. A simple, groovy tune for most of it. British artist. Most interesting though is the stuff going on around him. Funky keyboards/voices jump in randomly, and by the end it gets really congested with fun stuff. I like it, especially the little guitar bridge and the outro. Thanks.

Whippin' Picadilly - Gomez. I started listening to this band some years ago and the things you are describing are the reason why I like this band.

3. Haha, a little tropical jazz comin my way. Def. like the chords and voices (still not sure what they're saying). A nice, exotic little interlude.

Fried Neckbones and some homefries - Willie Bobo. Haha I was afraid this could be a bit too random, because of the style, but I couldn't resist putting some of this stuff on this tape, because it kinda represents my taste in music idk....I expected you to be open minded though so I'm glad you liked it

4. Sounds like Lou Reed, yeah...95% sure it's the Velvet Underground, though I'm not that familiar with the song. My brother worships them, so no complaints here. In general I really like the retro-ness of this mix.

Yes, this is Lou Reed....well, the Velvet Underground. The song is called "Beginning to see the light"

5. A little electronic distortion and guitar going on, I like the arpeggios and thick ambience, voice sounds like a mix of artists I know, I kinda dig his rambling. Eclectic mix for sure. You're all right mix-maker, you're all right....

Mwha thanks! Dead Alive - Kurt Vile

6. Steady fade in of a note struggling to stay in place. Enter bluesy music. Ahh...God this feels familiar. I love her voice, and the song has a great earthy vibe. Feel like pulling out the guitar and jamming along. I approve of this music.

Annemone by Brian Jonestown Massacre

7. Groovy rythm followed by singing in a broken rythm to where I can hardly understand the lyrics. It's not bad. not my favorite, but kind of enjoyable.

I'm so green - CAN....one of the most important german Krautrock bands who have influenced Radiohead for example....it's an interesting genre....it can be so different....this song has been recorded in the 70's btw

8. Nice stomping drum rythm. Nice vocals follow. Alright song, the atmospherics of the chorus and bridge are pretty interesting, so I won't write this one off.

Storm by Django Django....don't ask me how I found this haha....I found this band on spotify somehow....

9. Another upbeat one with a strong bass. Intense guitars enter, Heavy brit rock. I like the use of distortion and the vocal effects. Still nothing I can say I dislike on this mix.

Age Class - Weekend. If you get the chance and if you are interested you should listen to the whole album (Sports)....it's heavy, but I enjoyed it.

10. Guitar arpeggios. I like this chord progression, it's kind of unique. Voice is pretty neutral, which fits the mood. Song is repetitive, though that's almost never a vice for me. Not bad.

Locust Valley - Women

11. Bluesy guitar and vocals. It's kind of like black keys with an orchestra. Song bounces around a lot. cool.

TAOS - Menomena...I like how the song changes so much though this didn't seem too obvious after the first listen

12. One of my favorites for a reason I can't quite explain. Snappy verse merging into a rock chorus with a constantly moving vocal melody and great lyrics. Song is followed by a few moments of piano.

Man must dance - Johnossi (Swedish band)

13. Guitar-driven rock song (wish I had more words to describe stuffs). It's not bad. Decent chorus.

Restless - Kakkmaddafakka....thought this one goes well with the song before

14. I kinda want to inject myself with this song. Love the feel of the keyboards and far-off voices. Ambient, but rythmic and kind of gritty. Great feel to this one.

Restless - Pill Wonder. Thought this one would go well with the one before, too (guess why haha...:wacky:)

15. Guitars and harmonica fade-in. I feel like an old guy would reprimand me for not knowing who this is; I definitely like its general vibe though. Good stuff.

Brothers - The War on drugs. I like this song a lot (though I get the impression that it gets repetitive when you listen to it too much)

16. Softly strummed acoustic guitar...soft vocals and far off chiming instruments and drums. Some reversed stuff there too. Mostly forgettable, but I like the little guitar bridge and fade out.

Disappearing Act - Grizzly Bear. I remember playing this at one of my Listening Parties and people who are more into Grizzly Bear than myself were asking who this band was and I told them and they said this song doesn't sound like them at all

17. Good pick for last song. Two chords and a bunch of synths and effects...I like your style! Another song I feel guilty for recognising but not knowing. The vocals and guitar are beautiful though. Nice chorus too.

I Get nervous - Lower Dens....I like this so much.....you should ask Mike if he knows it btw hahaha

So yeah, a really great mix, I must say. I didn't love everything, but I can't say I hated anything either. And in general it was exciting to hear songs that I liked and definitely wouldn't have come across otherwise.

I hope these compliments somehow make up for the fact that I'm turning in this review so late. :)

Hey Chris(?), I am REALLY glad you enjoyed this (and thank you for the compliments:awesome:). I didn't know anything about your musical taste and at first I had put some different stuff on it (like more electronical songs), but I had the impression that they didn't actually fit to this tape (since most of the songs seem to be similar genres)...I was on the train today listening to music and there were soooo many other songs I could have put on this (some that I like better)....I was kinda afraid you wouldn't like this.

So, thanks a bunch for the review and like I said before I am glad you liked it :)(I've tried to stalk you to find out more about your musical taste [after I made the tape haah] and it seemed that you are into music much, that's why I was kinda afraid you wouldn't like it)...

here is the playlist + the tape:

Ooooh and to Lore: Thank you for making that miytape for me!

I enjoyed it and it was really nice to get to listen to some stuff that I don't usually listen to (now I have a clue what most of you guys are talking about on here haha)....I liked how well those songs went together btw:nice:

Here is my review! Really sorry for taking so long :disappointed:

1. Nice, quiet beginning with acoustic guitar. i like the lyrics and the strings are pretty.

2. i like this one a lot, seems like a good song for a western. The singer has a nice voice too.

3. Sad song. This isn't something i'd normally listen to, sounds very 80s. The voice sounds really familiar, but i'm not liking it much.

4. Another 80s-sounding song with loud guitar parts. The singer has a deep, muffled voice. Again, this isn't the kind of music i would typically listen to.

5. This one is kind of erm, alternative country? i dunno, not too bad to listen to but there's nothing really special about it.

6. Apparently this guy doesn't want Joleen to take his man. This song is rather nice i s'pose.

7. Eh, not a fan of this kind of music. Grungy voice and repetitive lyrics that are trying really hard to sound deep.

8. The music in this song sounds sort of middle eastern. Don't like the singer's voice very much.

9. Sappy love song D: Heard this before of course, never known what it's called or who sings it though. Sorry, but i'm really not a fan of this.

10. Another love song. This one is just a guy singing a song with a guitar. Hmm, a little too simple and boring for me.

11. ~jukeboxes are fun and we're so cool~

12. Live country song. i dunno what to say about this one, every country song sounds the same to me.

13. i like the violin in this, sounds very celtic. The singer sounds a bit like the one in the second song though.

14. This one is a Jason Mraz song i think, but i only know this because you forgot to remove a few of the album covers. :P Hmm, i remember liking a few of his songs 6 or 7 years ago. This is nice to listen to but i find this kind of music to be a little bland.

15. This guy has a pleasant voice. The music and lyrics are also pleasant. if i were to rate it, i'd rate it a pleasant/10. i think it would've been better to end the mixtape with this one.

16. Forget the quiet, happy sound of the last song, now we're LOUD AND MISERABLE. i'm pretty sure this is Linkin Park. Not my cup of tea tbh.

Sorry if my review seems harsh, i guess we just have very different tastes in music. There were a few songs that i liked, and i can't say i hated any of them, although the last one did kind of assault my ears D: Anyway, thanks for making this and i'd really like to see the tracklist!

thanks Jules :D and awww you included the beatles on your playlist :awesome:

i've updated the first post with links to all the reviews/mixtapes so far. Let me know if i've missed anyone.

I'd give you a link to my list Violet, but I'm sure you know all the songs :P

All of them? Not quite. Most of them? Yep.

i think my partner asploded

i'm not entirely sure i want a review though :|

Awwwww.

Hi Graceful! I am the creator of your mixtape :) And that's okay for it being late; I'm on holidays at the moment, so I have plenty of time! :)

Mixtape maker: I'm REALLY sorry I'm so late, but finally, here's my review!

Track 01: (Spanish?) Guitars, some bongo drums and some kinda eerie synths start this track off before the electric guitar kicks in. A nice, chilled out instrumental, good track for the intro.

This is a song by Kaki King, a brilliant guitarist. This is her sort of style; the bongos you're hearing are mostly from Kaki hitting the guitar. If you see videos of her playing, she uses the guitar as a percussion instrument as well as a regular guitar. This song's called 'Bone Chaos in the Castle'.

Track 02: I recognise it from the first note: Too Late by Evermore. Great band, great song! I used to love this song and it’s ages since I listened to it, so it was a nice surprise to find it in here.

Oh, good to know! I've recently gotten into Evermore, so I thought this would be a good track :)

Track 03: I’ll admit, I found this track more than a little amusing, with it’s grim, almost gospel-choir-like singing underlying an otherwise pretty light-sounding song. Nice female vocals. It kinda sounds like it belongs to the soundtrack for a movie or a game. I think this one will take a little while to grow on me :P

This is 'Sentence' by a group called Era. Basically the main guy who runs it all wrote his own little language, and writes songs in the style of medieval Gregorian chants, and then puts awesome synth and guitar solos and stuff on it.

Track 04: Cute little rock song, the vocalist sounds a little familiar but I can’t pick who it is. Nothing particularly outstanding about this track but at the same time there’s certainly nothing wrong with it either!

Yeah, I doubt you've heard much of this band. They're a local Adelaide band I'm a fan of, called Hills and Trains. They've basically released a demo CD and an EP, and this is the first track from their EP, called Kicking and Screaming. They have the entire EP available on Triple J Unearthed, and I have their demo CD if you want a listen. Personally, I prefer the song live; the studio version just doesn't match the energy of them doing it live :D

Track 05: Another rock song, I like this one quite a bit more. Heavy, distorted guitars mixed in with piano, a few male vocals and even some strings (I love strings :awesome:). I couldn't help tapping my feet along to this one, I’m quite interested to see who this is!

This is a piano rock band by the name of Thirteen Senses, the first track from their second album Contact. The song is called Contact :P It's a great song, and a pretty good album as well.

Track 06: Acoustic guitars, trumpets (or some sort of horn, I don’t know). It starts off slow, then stops for a second and then everything kicks in at once, along with some vocals. I really enjoy this type of song, I definitely need to listen to this sort of stuff more often. Very light and upbeat, a little Spanish sounding. I found it a little distracting the way she kept counting up, though

Another local band. This band's called Fruit, and the song's 6 Thousand, 4 Hundred and 20 Something, from their album Here for Days. Unfortunately they broke up a few years ago. I have their two most recent albums, and a couple of live albums if you care to partake in some more.

Track 07: The vocals in this song sound like Something Corporate, who I used to listen to when I was a lot younger (before I discovered music I really liked :P). I personally don’t like vocals such as the ones on this song, I’m sorry! Apart from that the song's quite nice though, I like the piano sprinkled throughout the song.

It is indeed Something Corporare, from their last album, North. The song's called 'As You Sleep'.

Track 08: More Spanish guitars, though these ones sound REALLY Spanish. I feel like I should be serving red wine and cheese to classily-dressed people when I listen to this song :P Very enjoyable and a very smooth song. I’d like to hear more from this band!

A Norwegian acoustic duo by the name of Kings of Convenience. One of my favourite bands of all time; this song's called Mrs Cold. And yes, the classy cheese and wine serving mood does come across. This is actually one of their more upbeat songs, :laugh3: They have some really depressing songs, but all acoustic.

Track 09: More horns, funky bass. More female vocals. Another pretty chilled-out song. The chorus line “Nothing, I said nothing is free” is SO familiar it’s bothering me :bomb:

Another indie Aussie band, by the name of Dirty Lucy. This is the first track from their album Dark Green, and the song is (unsurprisingly) called Nothing is Free. It's a great song; I'm glad you like it!

Track 10: Yet another very familiar-sounding vocalist, again I can’t pick who it is! A sweet, slow, simple and quite atmospheric song that starts to wind down the mixtape nicely.

Uhmm, this is Lifehouse, the song is Everything. You'd probably recognise this band from the songs Hanging by a Moment and You & Me.

Track 11: Oooh, a very cute acoustic number! Reminds me a little of Josh Pyke but I know it’s not him. Very interested to find out who this one is!

Yet another local band of whom I'm a fan, a band by the name of Special Patrol. The song's called Hey Good Try. The song itself reminds me a little bit of Fix You :D I have all of these bands albums, so if you want more I'd be happy to send :)

Track 12: Another vocalist I’m not extremely keen on, I might be thinking of the wrong artist here but it reminds me of Jack’s Mannequin? I don't dislike the song though, and it's a nice way to end the mixtape.

Yeah, this is Jack's, who you're no doubt aware have the same vocalist/pianist as Something Corporate. The song's called Hammers and Strings.

So, mystery mixtape maker, thank you A LOT for putting this together for me! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it and I look forward to finding out the tracklisting, I'm quite keen to hear more from some of those artists! Thank you!

No problem! I had a lot of making it, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I think it's hella funny how Grace, Andy, and I somehow ended up in a mixtape triangle.

Haha, I noticed that! :awesome:

So was it me you were thinking before? :)

Yep. Grace's review made references to Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin, and I knew from extensive Last stalking (that I had to do to make your tape) that you liked those bands. You're the only CPer I know who has that sort of taste.

I love Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin and that kind of stuff :dazzled:

:uhoh:

hm what are they like?

Hi Andy! :awesome:

I really like that fact that you included a lot of music local to your area (I'm going to take a stab here and guess you're from Adelaide? :P).

One of the things I like about doing these exchanges is that most people on here don't know much Australian music so I exploit that as much as I can, but sadly you couldn't do that :P

I had heard a of a few of those artists, like Kings of Convenience and Thirteen Senses that I'd been meaning to give a listen, so thanks for introducing me to them!

Lifehouse! I knew I recognised them!

And I actually didn't know that about Something Corporate/Jack's Mannequin :P I guess I'm not enough of a fan of those bands to know that :D

If there are any albums in particular you'd recommend I listen to, I'd love to give them a go. I'll definitely be looking more into Special Patrol, Kings of Convenience and Thirteen Senses.

Thanks again! :awesome:

I think it's hella funny how Grace, Andy, and I somehow ended up in a mixtape triangle.

Ahahahaha, that's awesome! Mixtape triangle ftw :awesome:

Oh and I'm totally downloading your mix now Violet (I was going to anyway) to complete the triangle

Yep. Grace's review made references to Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin, and I knew from extensive Last stalking (that I had to do to make your tape) that you liked those bands. You're the only CPer I know who has that sort of taste.

:awesome: I like being unique :D

Respect, Cresty. :D

haha, great use of songtitles. Thanks again for the mix, Julia. You're obviously everywhere on the forum but we've never formally met, I don't think. Anyway...danke schon!

Indeed. Awesome Australians are awesome. :awesome:

Oh and I'm totally downloading your mix now Violet (I was going to anyway) to complete the triangle

OOOH. If it's going to be complete, I should download Andy's tape. I'll make a point of doing that some point after Easter Break. :wacky:

haha, great use of songtitles. Thanks again for the mix, Ren. You're obviously everywhere on the forum but we've never formally met, I don't think. Anyway...danke schon!

Ren? Uhhh. Chris, that's Julia. :uhoh:

Ren? Uhhh. Chris, that's Julia. :uhoh:

yeah..umm, let's just get the facepalm's over with. *blush*

Awwwww, it's OK. It happens.

Dude, seriously, it's not that big of a deal. You had a slip. I really don't think either of them are going to get offended due to something trivial like that.

...

Wow, I have no idea why I typed that. Lemme fix it.

Edited. I think what I thought in my head somehow messed up when I was trying to type. HURR DURR.
