The 8th Mixtape Exchange (Links in first post)

Featured Replies

Here it goes.

1. Nice opener. It is so calm and soothing. I like it. Interesting ending :}

The Books. Nick Zammuto doesn't sing often. Usually their songs consists of guitar, cello and sampled tv and field recordings, but this one really stood out. Glad you liked it, I personally really like his lyrics.

2. Very nice voice there. And the ending jweoifjwieofjwef. I love it. So beautiful. Jon Hopkins' collab with King Creosote. This is the only place on the mix the song really fit, but by doing so I ended up making the first few songs much more mellow than I had initially intended.

3. Okay, this one is defnitely one of my favourite. I was crying the first time I heard it. Breathtaking song. The voices in the chorus and the general melody. uuugh so much love for this song.

You and me both! :wacky: I added this song to the mix moments after hearing it for the first time. It's a slowcore band called Spokane that I came across on the soundtrack to the film 'The Builder'. It's off the album "Able Bodies", though I think I prefer "Little Hours".

4. Not gonna lie, this one disturbed me haha. I don't like much the atmosphere, but I don't think it was intended as a comfortable atmosphere haha. Couldn't wait for it to be over haha.

Haha, sorry. I like using short little transition songs, and I couldn't resist. It's 'The Color of the Fire' by Boards of Canada btw.

5. I was bobbing my head to this one. Not so bad, I like. The electronic drums are catchy. And the little blues influence at the end was great.

'Crap Kraft Dinner' by Hot Chip. I thought the emphasis on the word 'love' between this and the last track was kind of cute.

6. ooh piano instrumental with some voices speaking over. Not bad. I don't know if it'S a transition? But if so, it'S a nice one.

It's more a transitional track, but also a chance to show how much I over-think things. In the last mixtape I made for you I also had a piano track by Max Richter, and I later mentioned that the album it was from featured snippets of quotations from Kafka. So second time around I figured I ought to include a track in which Emma Thompson reads from "The Blue Notebooks".

7. Oh my. I liked that one a lot. I love how we can hear the bass very loudly. And the voice is not so bad. Another highlight.

I guess it's the first real 'upbeat' track on the mix. You can thank my friend danimal for this one. It's an artist from North Carolina who goes by the name "Margolnick". Song is called "The Ladder"

8. I actually like this one. The first time, not so much, but I guess it grew on me now. It's not the usual kind of thing that I'd like but it's great.

Angel Echoes by Four Tet. I'd say he's more well known for his remixes. He's kinda in vogue this season.

9. This one is very soothing. The strings are beautiful. And the nthe drum starts and totally different song! The voice sounds like Glen Hansard's. Which is a good thing, because I love the man in The Swell Season.

Good call. it's Glen Hansard, but with The Frames (his band before Marketa). Song is 'Ship Caught In The Bay'.

10. This is sooooo familiar. It sounds like Animal Collective. I looooooove it. Another highlight. I just love the voice. And the general atmosphere of the song.

Two for two. :D

11. This one is not the best song on the mixtape at all, but I didn't dislike it. The feminine vocals are great. Swarming by Efterklang, honestly had no guess what you'd think when I added it.

12. Quiet one. Quite calm. It's a bit long. But I know i'd appreciate more if it was at night and I was listening to it lying down.

The first real ambient track on the mix. I realize I may have been a bit selfish in adding tracks more as an expression of my own taste than to put what you might be more interested in. I put this is in because a. I've always wanted to use a track by Stars Of The Lid b. I thought it made for a great transition into the next song.

13. Oooh distorted guitars. Nice strings at the end. I like it. It'd be great if the vocals were more audible, though. Nevertheless, I like it.

Sometimes by My Bloody Valentine. In shoegaze it was kind of a trait that vocals were intentionally quiet compared to everything else, so that it was like just another part of the music and doesn't break through the wall of sound. I'm glad you like it, it's easily one of my favorite all-time songs.

14. Classical piano composition. I like calssical music a lot. and this one gave me the impression of being from a recent artist. or a not so old one haha. A bit long though. This was audacious of me in that I realized it was longer than most people would care for, but I was obsessed with making the end of the tape almost uncomfortable in its transitions. I also really wanted to put something by Arvo Part, this one is Spiegel im Spiegel (Mirror in Mirror). The point of this track was basically to be like an endless stretch of clear sounds and consonance. Glad it didn't put you to sleep.

15. This one was special. I don't think I have heard anything like that before. The piano was stunning. A highlight.

Peudonyms by Gregor Samsa. Wasn't sure what you'd think of the girl's voice, but I kept it because of the keyboards at the end.

16. This one! I remember loving it last night and now I just love it even more! Might be my favourite from the mixtape. The electric guitar mixing in with the sounds at the beginning.. I love it. The trings are very pretty. My favourite part is the last couple of minutes. Flawless song.

Yay! Really happy you like this one. It's 'Nonanimal' by the amazing, noble and mysterious Andrew Bird.

17. haha who is saying t.hat? he sounds interesting haha. Nice transition.

Took this off of The Books' album "The Way Out". It's "A Wonderful Phrase by Gandhi" (kinda self explanatory).

18. Hmm I don't know what to think about this one :/ It was sort of long and a little repetitive. :/ Sorry.

Quite Alright. The group is Concert Silence, which is a collab between Matthew Cooper of Eluvium, and a guy named Charles Buckingham. The project was about manipulating live sound, so the whole thing is done live. I really like how everything starts deteriorating halfway through.

19. Nice classical guitar there. Not so much for the vocals. But I dont dislike it either. Nice way to close the mixtape.

It's not uncommon to rag on Nico's singing. This is off her first solo album outside of famous Warhol collabs with The Velvet Underground. It's also featured in the movie 'The Royal Tenenbaums'. All of my tapes in the past ended in a long ambient fade out, so it was nice to have a short, simple closer.

Overall, this mixtape was quite calm and filled with songs I hadn't heard before or genres I don't listen to often. I liked it a lot at the exception of a few songs. Thank you very much, mixtape maker, can't wait to see if my doubts are founded and you are the one I think you are haha.

Biggest highlights: 3 10 and 16

So yeah, you were riht, me again. When I first the PM I was tempted to message Kelsie to point that I already drew you not to long ago (although, with a different screenname), but I figured that would end up being really complicated (and there's no rule saying you have to have a different person every time). I'm really excited that hear you liked most of it! I made sure to use a completely different set of bands from last time (with the exception of the Max Richter track) in the hope you wouldn't be disappointed with a tape that might sound just like my last one. Luckily, I think it worked out.

So, like, Rapidshare is being a gigantic pain in the buttocks. Would it be possible for whoever made my tape to upload via mediafire? (if not, it's okay. I'll just have to get a hold of someone else's computer which' may take another day.)

Oh my! I had no idea it was you again when I sent you that VM, my bad! D:

Hahaha thank you again for this tape. I looooove having you as my mixtape maker. I always listen to things I never listened to in the past. I had actually been meaning to check out Four Tet, Andrew Bird and Animal Collective. I had heard of them too often to ignore them.

Thank you very very much :D

Andrew Bird :bomb:

a-chan: I'm your mixtape maker! :D Thanks for the review, I'm glad you liked it!

Thx! I really enjoyed it!

1-Beginning could have been a Beatles song then the chorus unleash. It's warm and upbeat. It's a great song, I really like it!

Yeah it does sort of sound like the Beatles! I just discovered this song about be a week before I made the tape and really loved it. It's "Where to Start" by Tommy and the High Pilots. I thought the title made it an appropriate opening song.

Good start indeed, will check it out!

2-Upbeat song, sound kinda like Brandon Flowers but I don't think it's him though...Radio friendly and easy to the ear!

It's "Time Won't Let Me Go" by The Bravery. If you like them you should listen to "Ours", "The Ocean" and "Believe", I had trouble deciding which of those to include.

again, will check it out!

3-Catchy pop-rock song with an 80's feeling though it! Kinda like A-Ha! I've heard this one on the radio *recognize the chorus* but I don't know who sings this. I like it.

"Say You Don't Want It" by One Night Only. They're not popular over here, but I bet they are more popular across the pond. I really like them.If you are a Harry Potter fan (like me!!), you might be interested to know that Emma Watson is in the video.

One Night Only!!! I know that name, I've seen iton the player of my radio station! It cross the pound but I listen to a rock radio station though...I never heard it on 'general' airwaves :/

5-Starting with piano again but violins ang electric guitars kicks in to give an 'edgy' sound. Male singing. A nice rock song (like the violin)

Just discovered this band recently too, they're called Wakey!Wakey!. I was torn between this one and "Dance So Good", but that one is slower so I decided on this one because it is more upbeat. I don't know if other people like slow/sad songs as much as I do!

I love sad songs too but I have to be in the mood for it!

14-Female singer (like the clapping at the beginning), very lovely song, I love the feeling that runs through it (don't know how to describe it but I like it!).

"Nightingale" by Howling Bellls. Howling Bells opened for Coldplay when I saw them in Winnipeg, and I was totally blown away. If I remember correctly they played this song first and my friends and I instantly loved them. The song is so haunting and beautiful.

Howling Bells!! I've heard them a few times on several mix and I've liked what I've heard so far. Should definitively dig further!

Again, thx a lot!! A lot of tunes will go in mp3 player *w*

^Thankyou again for my tape. Seeing some of the artists now I will definitely be checking a fair few of them out.

Just had my first listen, and I'm pretty sure I know it is :P My review will be posted later :)

I remember nobody even really cheered for them at all, except when they said "coldplay". :wacky:

Oh snap. hahaha Alex Turner. *high five*

And I just might have to download this for the Tame Impala cover....:inquisitive:

*high five*

:awesome:

You should, and then listen to the whole thing, and then tell me what you think

Wow, I never thought my tape would be this well received I'm grinning like an idiot here, thanks for the lovely kind words, and I'm really glad you liked it. Your English is perfect Thalia btw, no need to worry.

! Thank you very much! Glad I made you happy, tehe.

I didn't really know where to start with your musical tastes tbh, all I knew for sure that we had in common was Apparatjik, so I guess that determined a few of the more electronic-y choices. A lot of the track were picked for their lyrics and instrumentation, in the past I've over-done the rock/electric guiatrs on mixtapes and this time I wanted to tone it down a bit and introduce some other instrumentation whilst still keeping things a litle rocky.

As I said before, you did a perfect job with the different songs. I’m rather picky with music but you surprised me with a great mixtape and I’m very happy you did :wacky:

I picked this song specifically for it's intro so I'm glad you spotted that. I could have chosen anything off this album tbh as it's all good. They're called Hey Rosetta!, a Canadian six-piece that specialise in this sort of high energy rock with strings, brass, everything really.
Long instrumental intros are one of my weaknesses :awesome:

I guess it is quite easy going, I'd not thought of it like that before. I really like this song for the lyrics "It's not that I don't trust her, it's just her cups of tea, I think she's messing round, I think it's L.S.D" haha The song's about him tripping after someone's spiked his cuppa. A slightly old school Liverpool band called Shack

LOL yeah the lyrics are pretty f*cked up, but in a good way.

This was picked for the Apparatjik connection. I like this song, it's nice and upbeat but there's others on the album that I like better. The album is quite a mixed bag, it's not all this electronic. This is Andy Burrows, Razorlight's old drummer, who has since gone solo under the name I Am Arrows. He played everything on the album himself apparently. It's impressive stuff.
Cool, I’m gonna chek it out as soon as I can.

And he played it all by himself? :stunned: Impressive!

Aw I'm glad you like this one, it's one of my fave songs at the moment. This is Kassidy, a fairly new Scottish guitar band. Quite literally "guitar band" as in there's four of 'em and they all play guitar. They have epic beards too, I dunno why that's relevant. If you liked this, you should check out their debut album, Hope St, it's very very good.

*drools* GREAT finally I know the name of that masterpiece! Thank you for putting that song in, it really REALLY matches my musical taste and I was seeking for a great song like this the past few days.

hehe Yeah, I needed a little short bit of quiet to close Side A and make the opener of Side B really stand out.... I guess it did the trick This is one of Mew's intermezzos off No More Stories
Mew you say? Cool beans! I’m in love with their new version of King Christian :wacky:

haha Bit mental huh? This is a collaboration by Paloma Faith, Graham Coxon from Blur and Bill Ryder-Jones, The Coral's old guitarist and it was written specially for Converse, like an advertising campaign thingie. It is rather dirty/kinky, I love it. Free download too.

“A bit mental” …Understatement of the year!! :laugh3: Cool, gonna download it afterwards!

Actually it's not a girl, it's Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys, going solo to soundtrack a movie called Submarine. I'm not a big Arctic Monkeys fan, but I do like the Last Shadow Puppets so I got this ep on a whim really. This is the best song on it. I really like the lyrics "Something in your magnetism must have pissed them off" He has a great way with words.
hahaOOPS  Well he has a very bright voice then, ahem *cough*

Yes and I agree with you on the “great way with words” The lyrics are pretty funny :D

Yeah, Steve Mason again but it's The Beta Band this time from 2004. They were a very experimental band and did like to play around with rhythm and timestops and stuff. Again, it's the lyrics that get me on this track, they are very evocative. "I try to do my own thing, but the trouble with your own thing is you end up on your own"

The lyrics are sadly the truth  But nice song!

It's pure sex.
Well yes, his voice is rather hot :sweatdrop:

The Coral. Just the best band ever to walk the face of the planet. I'm a tiny wee bit obsessed with them I picked this one cos the dual vocals sound lovely together - James, the main singer, has a voice that's quite rough and gravelly and Lee is more melodic. Melancholic but beautiful, but all thier stuff is different, they're the most diverse and varied band that I know, I can't praise them enough.

*runs off to google them*

The latest single from another of my fave bands, Goldheart Assembly. It's really pretty with the harp and everything. This one's a free download too.

Hooray for free downloads!

Max Richter.

my mixtape sucks and everyone else's mixtapes are so awesome :bigcry:

I made another mixtape last night because I was bored and I like it more than my cping mixtape and I think my mixtape partner would like it more too :blank:

Lore, would you stop worrying? You have excellent taste.

Mixtape maker, I'm sorry, I've been so busy these days. I haven't even got a chance to listen to your mixtape yet, so be patient. I just got back to my room, too tired. Please give me some time. :disappointed:

Hi Squareonefivesix :D I made the mixtape for you! I'm happy that you find it nice/good! I know what you mean with the renaming properly, I had it last time, and now this time also... Some people just don't know how to do it properly, really irritating...

01 - Erik Satie - Gymnopédie No. 1 (Gymnopédies)

Funny you say that it reminds you of the song Chris played after Politik during the Viva La Vida tour (Gnossienne No.1), because it's from the same composer! I really love all his work, and this is one of my favourites. It's actually really easy to play on piano!

02 - The National - Slow Show (Boxer), 2007

It actually is the National... So yeah it sounds like the National :p I'm happy you liked it :) I think this is my favourite song of them!

03 - Coldplay - Poppyfields (Prospekt's March, 2008)

You know it's Coldplay right? Or are you not a big Coldplay fan, but just on this forum? It's the little instrumental song at the end of Prospekt's March :) I love it!

04 - Moss - I Apologise (Dear Simon) Never Be Scared/Don't Be A Hero, 2009

This is a Dutch band! I thought I had to put some music on it from my own country, so this was it :) I really like this song, reminds me a bit of Strawberry Swing!

05 - Arcade Fire - Deep Blue (The Suburbs, 2009)

Yes Arcade Fire! This is from their latest album (I don't call it "the new album" anymore :p). This song is my favourite of the album, especially for the lyrics :) Kasparov - Deep Blue, 1996

06 - Belle and Sebastian - I Love My Car (Push Barman to Open Old Wounds, 2005)

A friend of mine sended this song to me, and I quite liked it so I put it on the mixtape :) The lyrics are strange I know, but I listen to the instruments in this song :p

07 - Coldplay - Square One (Instrumental Outro, X&Y, 2005)

I thought, Hey! You're name is Squareonefivesix,, so I thought you liked Square One :p So this is the little outro of this song but without Chris singing... It is not so exciting I know, but I thought let's put some little Coldplay pieces into the mixtape :)

08 - Porcupine Tree - Trains (In Absentia, 2002)

Haha I thought you would absoluly hate this song :o Many people do... But I'm happy you think it's "OK". I really enjoy their music!

09 - The Postal Service - Such Great Heights (Give Up, 2003)

I heard this song once on a commercial here on Dutch TV... And a few weeks later I came across it on YouTube! I thought you would like it, because it's a bit electronic like X&Y/Apparatjik... I really like the song! Especially the beeping sounds at the beginning sounds great at full volume :p And I really like the lyric "Everything looks perfect from far away"

10 - Jamie Cullum - High And Dry (Pointless Nostalgic, 2002)

Ah I'm happy you like this one! I wanted some Jazz it.. And also some Radiohead... So why not 2 in one song? :p I really like this cover too! Although nothing compares to the original song of course...

11 - Feist - I Feel It All (The Reminder, 2007)

There had to be one song with female voice in it I thought :p So this song crossed my mind... I don't know that many songs with female voices, but this band I like! There are pretty known from the song "1234" that was used in a iPod commercial!

12 - Radical Face - Welcome Home (Ghost, 2007)

Again a song I found out about through a commercial! From Nikon... I really like the sound of this song, the piano and guitar... Vocals could be better yeah.. But hey I can't sing either...

+ - Coldplay - Violet Hill (Instrumental Outro, Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, 2008)

No this is not part of the previous song, but I kinda thought it would fit together in some way... But when I listen to it now again, It actually doesn't... This is the little piano outro from Violet Hill, but without the Vocals... Again you didn't recognised it?

I'm very happy you at least think it's nice or good :p I thought you wouldn't liked it at all... And yes I know the tracks are all a bit similar, but that was also my original idea... I tried to make just a nice happy, summery (is that a word?) mixtape :) Something I enjoy listening to on a sunny day lying in the grass looking at the sky :D

Ok, gonna post my review now, I wouldn't normally review so quick as I like to take a few days to listen but I think I'll be offline over the Easter weekend and I want to get the tracklist back before then :)

First off, to whoever made this tape, I'd like to say thanks for renaming everything properly; I think this is the first mixtape I've received where I've not been spoilered by accidently catching a glimpse of the odd artist name or artwork as I've unzipped it. I've listened to this completeyl 'blind' and spoiler free, so thanks for that. I know it's petty, but it is much more fun when you don't get spoiled imo. Cute little artwork btw.

1 - Nice little classical track. Reminds me of Postcards From Far Away or that other little piano piece that Chris played sometimes on the Viva tours, I forget the name. I'm not much into classical music, can you tell? ;) Not something I'd choose to listen to, but it's lovely tho, quite cute and soothing.

2 - The guy's vocal is a bit drone-y and sounds bit familiar but I have no idea why. The track is nice, I like the acoustic guitar and the strings. I like it when the piano comes in cos it needs that change to stop it being too dull. I like the lyrics. It reminds me of The National, but I dunno why cos I don't know them all that well :\

3 - Short track, almost missed it. Nondescript little instumental piece, pretty but nothing interesting to say about it

4 - I like the beginning to this, I was in need of some electric guitar. I like the lyrics in this, they're interesting. There's elements of Mumford and sons and Snow Patrol in here, but in a good way. It's good this, I like.

5 - Arcade Fire? Must be. I do like Win Butler's vocal style, he's very soothing. I'm gonna guess this is off the new album. I have listened to it a couple of times, but I couldn't put names to tracks, if you know what I mean. This is one of their nicer songs, I quite like this one, not as dull as some of their other stuff. I like the way it fades out.

6 - Nice beginning, another instrumental perhaps? Oh ok, horns now...bit odd. Now the singing comes in; he loves his dog and his pussy cat...ummm o-kay that's nice for him. This is weird. Now it's all gone a bit 1920's tea dance, should I start doing the charleston? Not my cup of tea this, it's too bizarre, but bold choice, I applaud your adventurism.

7 - Another short interlude. Again sweet, but not very exciting.

8 - Acoustic again, starts a little dull but then it picks up. Progresses well, I like the handclaps about 3/4 of the way thru and then when it proper rocks out at the end. It's alright, this one, I've got nothing bad to say about it, but it's not really great either.

9 - Synths now, nice change. Not a big fan of the generic drum machine beat, but it works I guess. Vocalist reminds me of Jonas Bjerre or the Owl City fella. I like the electric guitar in this, but it's a bit subdued overall, it could do with being more....well, just more.

10 - Oooooooh I love this song & love this version too. I'm pretty sure I heard this one before I heard the original. In fact this might well be the reason why I went out and bought the Bends. I know Thom Yorke hates this song (their version, tho he prob hates this one too, the miserable bastard), but I love it, so screw him. haha. The vocal is beautiful on this and the piano as well, it's a good example of a really good cover, cos it's more of an reinterpretation than a straighforward cover. Good choice. High & Dry - Jamie Cullum

11 - Girl singer. Decent vocal, I often find female vocalist quite annoying, but this is alright. I like the lyrics; "I'll be the one to break my heart" ...hmm know how she feels. This is sweet & kooky - I can almost hear the Kate Bush influence.

12 - Another acoustic-y one. S'ok, this one. Again I like the handclaps, makes it more interesting than it otherwise could be. The vocal and the lyrics are a bit uninspiring tho. I like the bit at the end, is it meant to be a part of this song, cos it sounds nothing like the rest of it. It mirrors the first track, sounding a bit Coldplay-like so it bookends the mixtape rather nicely.

Overall, a nice/good tape. The tracks all worked well together and had a good flow. There wasn't anything I hated, which is always a good thing. But it was somewhat all of a muchness tho, some of the tracks were a bit too similar in style for anything to really stand out for me. I really found myself craving a bit of dirty electric guitar or something that felt like it had a little bit of energy to it. But that's probably just my tastes. This mix would make a good chillout tape, something to lie out in the sun with on a summer's day :) Good job 7.5/10

^ OMG Alex Turner I Am Arrows Goldheart Assembly Marmaduke Duke & Kassidy?! That is like my dream mixtape! :-o my mixtape maker; please please be patient with me, I normally take a while to review it because I like to listen quite a few times :-S. But I will do it!
