Bands you wished you liked

Featured Replies

OK, this is not a thread about wanting to be cool. It is about looking at an artist or band, not disliking them, just not really getting them but at the same time realising that you like similar things and the artist in question has affected millions of people and has many fans. It could just be that you haven't heard the right song to get into them and you are approaching them from the wrong angle.

A year ago, for example, I found Neil Young quite annoying. His voice was too high and the music did nothing for me. Then I hit the right track (can't even remember which one now) and all of a sudden I got it. That really helped me understand where he was coming from, and from there I got more and more into him. There is still plenty of music I don't particularly like by him, some I'd go as far to say that I dislike him, given the amount he has produced, but there's a good three or four albums which I now think are awesome, and some of the tracks I disregarded at first before I got into him, have now grown on me.

It got me wondering just how many artists or bands there are out there that I could like if I was given the opportunity to explore them from the right angle. It wouldn't work with bands/artists that I hate, but one person I've never really bothered about has been Bob Dylan. Many see him as one of, if not the, greatest songwriter of all time. I have always found him quite boring, and aside from Subterranean Homesick Blues and All Along The Watchtower I've not enjoyed anything (I do like 'Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again' but it's far too long).

I thought I would create this thread so that people could say who they would like to give a chance, and for others to suggest tracks to start on, to see if we can all expand our musical horizons and break down some barriers we have put up from first impressions for some artists/bands. After all, if I do get into Bob Dylan there is a hell of a lot to get into.

You can also suggest genres if you wish. I don't mind making playlists for people who would like them, if it is an artist/band that I know something about and like.

I never got into Radiohead , Muse and Mew ...

Those are quite the most popular bands on this forum ...

Radiohead and Mew's music just doesn't move me at all ...

I do like quite some Muse songs , but it stays there ...

If that was the idea of the thread ?

Do you have an interest in getting into these bands?

I want it to be used as a thread where everyone can help each other get into bands.

If you let me know what you have heard by Radiohead then I could make you a playlist. Do you have Spotify?

Same for Radiohead :\ i always feel left out when people are all excited about news and stuff

^ yep , same here

^^ Oh well , no I'm not really interessed in getting into Rh

I do want to hear some more "Rock" songs of Radiohead , 'cause for me , after all I heard from them , they aren't very 'Rock 'n Roll' as music genre ....

Do they heave some "heavier" songs as creep and stuff ?

I am very interessed to hear more of The Coral and The Charlatans ...

If there are some fans here ?

This. :|

kings of leon and the killers

i like few of their songs but don't really understand them

Haha it's turning into a "confess you're not a Radiohead fan" thread.

(Well, add me to it :uhoh:)

But I love the original idea of this thread and I had similar experiences than what you described.

Sometimes it really takes finding the right starting point.

I completely know what you mean since I got into Bowie, I joined some forums and a lot of them discuss Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground but I can't seem to get into the band or his solo stuff other than Perfect day.

Sometimes I wish I could love the Beatles. I mean I've tried listening to a bunch of their albums, but I've never been able to just want to sit down and listen to the Beatles. I've never been "moved" by the Beatles like a lot of their fans have been.

Maybe Blur as well.

Actually maybe British music as a whole haha

If you guys let me know what you have heard, and if you don't know the tracks then the general genre's, then I can sort you guys out with playlists. Spotify would be easy for me, but I can do Youtube playlists if you wish, that will require some effort though haha. Let me know.

I can help you with that.

You got Spotify?

Yes, but I can only use it when I have fast connection speed :\

Are you after Blur pop or Blur mature song writing?

Or have you heard it all?

I'd probably be the same about Radiohead. I recognise their talent and intrigue and their albums but they just cannot grip me or hit me in the heart.

Muse is another band which I wish I could like but I feel are just very samey and even boring at times.

I listened to their last 3 albums. Didn't really do much for me.

oh :shy: i was afraid to be the only one in the EARTH planet who cannot listen The Beatles lol and i must confess, i did not want to say their names here

I have The Abbey Road and another one, and i really respect their music and what they contribute to music, but.. i cant listen their songs :\ i prefer some covers i´ve listen from other artists instead.

^I'll give that a listen later.

No spotify in Canada means I have to do a bunch of proxy server shit to get it to work haha
