How do you know what you're going to do with your life

Featured Replies

You'll just end up doing things. You might work out what you want to do or you might not. And you might find what you want to do, then five years later change your mind. Just don't worry about it, you'll be fine. Providing you have a basic intellect you aren't gonna starve in the Western World. Things may be lame at some point but it could be a lot worse.

Just enjoy the ride.

I JUST figured out what I want to do, and I'm almost 19! I don't think people should feel pressured to choose a career when they are young, because they're just going to change their mind anyway (in many cases).

I think you should think about what you enjoy, try and think of careers related to what you enjoy, and figure out if these interests are realistic to apply and build a career with. Good luck!

I'm 25 and have no idea. I'm happy with myself, so that's a positive thing!

Danm Space Cadet :surprised:

Kudos :nice:

I like art, like alot. But I don't know what to do. I don't want to be a painter or something, but I like to create things. I was considering filmmaking, but I don't have much experience on it, like I'm not some movie buff. But I would love to try something like that.

Musician is a dream, but I want to see if I actually like it, I did try to learn a lot of things, I try to write everyday (and not school subjects) I mean, like, analize and resume the day, etc.

But, let's not jump to conclusions lulz.

I've always changed my mind when it comes to careers, when I was a kid I wanted to be a painter, then a photographer, filmmaker, then musician, then filmmaker again and it's a mix of the two. So, I've always wanted to work with art, and I can't imagine myself doing something other than using my hands as much or more as I do now (lulzdirty).

But I don't know, eh I'm just 13 so leik maybe I'll be a banker.

I'm the same age as you and I have no clue as well, all I know is that I want to do something science related.

My suggestion is to start taking classes in areas that you think interest you. That way you can see if you actually like them or not. For example, I took bio this year and I think it's absolutely fascinating. So I'm thinking I may want to go into the biochem field, as there's tons of advancements in that area. I may also want to do something like psychology, sociology, anthropology, etc so I'm taking classes in that area senior year (grade 12).

As for being a musician, I give you a lot of credit for wanting to do your dream, but a quick word of warning: the music industry is EXTREMELY difficult to be successful in. Especially bands, as there are so many of them and sometimes the really talented people never get signed. It's still difficult for orchestral musicians, although with enough searching there's often some sort of performance.

With that being said, be confident and go for it if that's what you want to do. you don't want to live your life working in a career you don't enjoy.

Im in year 9 and by next year we are expected to have a fairly good

idea on what we are going to end up doing with our lives.

Is it the subjects that we enjoy we build on or do we go with something totally different???

wait holy shit you're in year nine? im year 10. I have no idea what i will do with my life (if i dont become the gr8est musician ever)

^I'm going to come out with it.

I'm so jealous of you :wacky:

You're still young, don't worry that much, you still have time :nice: As some other people said, don't think of pleasing your parents, if there's something you really like and you are interested in, go for it, try to learn more about it. The schedules/plans schools have don't always shape your future...when I was your age I also had to choose and according to that decision I should have been an accountant, a manager or something of the sort and I'm far from it :P. Even if you don't make the right decision now, you still have time! Don't compare yourself with your friends, life is unpredictable and it is difficult to have your life planned when you're 14, I'm 25 and I don't know what I will be doing in 5 years :P. Most of the plans they have may change, since people change as well.

lol, I mean I wrote all the songs and i don't just mean the lyrics but all the instrumental too

and at gigs we got about $100 each and because our singer thought she was more important than everyone else and she deserved more money so then i had to give her my money. Which made me earn nothing which is crap because I did everything and it wasn't only that it was that our singer and drummer were dating and doing all this odd stuff on stage, it was giving us a bad rep.

Have you seen The Commitments?

i'm 21 now.. soon 22. And i still don't really know.. I guess i have to take care a lot of issues before i can start seeing a some kind of light about this subject.. I know it's kind of silly to feel so pressured but i've been really down about this a few years now. and the pressure is also to do with my brillant sister who's always known what she wants and really worked for it, too. She's gonna be a doctor soon.

and it's shit that it seems like having a good and succesful career is all that some people care about.. i wanna say fuck that..

i guess you don't really know until you're actually doing the thing you want to do

People are generally told to pursue a career which they like, so they can do what they love to do. However, being able to do that is not always the case. Some of us get stuck in jobs we don't like, some people judge us based on those jobs or what we've chosen to do academically. Let's say you're stuck at some job you don't really want to be doing for a long time but really have to based on the limited job offers, state of the economy, etc. A cashier for example. The cashier wants to travel the world, he wants to change it in some way, he wants to visit his favorite band on tour, he wants to be remembered. Now maybe you don't think he can do any of those things just based on his situation, or your presumptions about him based on that situation. It doesn't matter what you've done or what you're doing in other words. If you know you're that person who can make everyone laugh, that person who can make someone's day, that person who has a lot of good ideas, or whatever you're good at, you shouldn't let yourself be slowed down by anything. If you remained determined, use the power of positive attraction, and stay true to what you want to do, then it manifests itself. Let your dreams, your hopes and wishes manifest into your reality in one way or another. Sorry for the lengthy reply, i'm sure the other guys pretty much summed it up in less words but yeah.

I've just started working a job that I was sure I want to do for at least the next thirty years for two months now, and all I can think about is looking for other options cause this job is slowly killing me (just heard Radiohead's No Surprises and it's making me more depressed). However, I'm tight up with a five years contract so I guess I'm gonna be stucked for a while in this situation.

My point is, you can plan all you want but at the end of the day you'll never be sure that you'll be happy with what youve planned for until it happens.

I want to be a vet so I'll do scietific things that make it possible to go learn that at uni

think about what you really want to be and give everything for it no matter what the rest of the world says :)

I've been talking about this with my Dad for quite a while on saturday...and what I've learned is that the most important thing is to believe in yourself....I know this sounds kinda lame, because you should always do that, but sometimes I don't and I am sure many people don't believe in themselves, but it took me one step further...I think

pursuing music during a near economic depression is a seriously difficult road to travel down. I myself, and every other band, singer/songwriter, or rapper in Atlanta understand the daily struggle in trying to be heard. Unless you're packing out amphitheaters and arenas, bands generally don't make money playing shows. Even if you pack out a place, you're still splitting the money between the other band members. And so you're left with not much... enough to get gas on the way home, and perhaps a cheap meal. Even my friends signed on Maverick didn't make any money and the label eventually plummeted and they were dropped. A lot of people decide they want to do music early on in life. Most give up by their late 20s. I know incredible musicians who just flat out couldn't deal with the lifestyle anymore and quit. My own mentor suffered this fate. A few years ago he left for LA to work with Chris Robinson, Blake Sennett (Rilo Kiley, The Elected) and Devendra Banhart, hung out with Danger Mouse, and came back energized. Now he builds and fixes espresso machines for a living, and has no desire to pursue music, even though it is still his life. The road got to him. The guy grew up with Butch Walker, and he GAVE UP.

I almost lost my faith as well. I slowly watched my friends turn from driven local rock stars to heroin addicts. So many bands break up because of drug addictions; most of them BEFORE stardom. So I became disenchanted and decided to work on a business plan for a mixology bar. If it weren't for the constant encouragement from my friends and family to pursue music, I'd probably be a bar owner right now. My own parents even sat me down and told me that I would be abandoning my passion if I didn't pursue music. So one year ago, I dropped everything I had to make a record. I was jobless and homeless, but that's nothing new in the life of a musician. I crashed on couches, stayed with my family, and stayed in the studio where I recorded my first record. I shipped off the mastered copy today to get pressed. And now, for the first time, I feel like everything is falling into place. I'll own a bar when I'm old.

I was almost 28 when I figured all this out. It shouldn't have to be an age thing. Its like there's this imaginary deadline that everyone freaks out about, but no one quite knows for sure when that deadline is, everyone just assumes its "ASAP." Go at your natural pace; don't let pressure throw you off. You'll find it. Don't force it.

i dont i live the rock n roll life style lol
