Coldplay sales Updates

I'm questioning their decision making here a bit. They should have taken advantage of the successful showing on X-Factor and released CB. Also the video took for ever to release. When we all expected them to play CB at the Grammys, they went with Paradise. I just don't follow the thinking at all. They almost always do no wrong in my eyes, but if they play Paradise at the Brits I'll be very disappointed.

I think it's worth keeping in mind that although Paradise is seen as somewhat subpar and overplayed by a lot of people here, it remains their 2nd most successful single, proving especially commercially popular in the U.S. radio market. I suspect that's the primary reason it was chosen for their grammy performance.

got this from another forum, but interesting nonetheless:

UK Comparison after 17 Weeks of release:

Viva La Vida: 927,000

1–1–1–1–1–2–1–2–3–4–4–8–9–10–18–22–27 [17 Weeks]

Mylo Xyloto: 1,021,500

1-2-6-4-7-8-8-3-4-3-4-7-3-2-5-9-11 [17 Weeks]

MX was released in the Festive Season so that may have possibly helped sales (VLV was released in the Summer), but still great sales.

It's especially great results given that MX originally looked like it was going to drop rather quickly. The album has really proven to have exceptional legs (and not just in the UK)

Yeah I agree that MX is more of a slower burner and not as front-loaded as VLV.

Also, sales will probably go up in the next couple of weeks due to the Grammys and Brits.

As for PoC, I think it can be top 10 in the States, but I don't see Coldplay releasing that for another 3-4 months. Heck, they haven't even announced a release date for CB yet.

They will probably release it in March (CB), and since their tour starts in April...maybe they have some promo set up for CB during the month of March.

IMO , Releasing CB in the States would literally kill MX era there. It's already been dead for a while and CB will not pick up there. If they decide to release POC for the summer , it will be a hit but won't help the album at that time

Are you serious? The song proved to be a HUGE dissapointment in the US. Specifically on Radio. VLV (song) was a top 10 radio hit and got to 80 million AI . Paradise stalled at 20 AI ( ETIAW did better , sitting at 33 million impressions ) . It didn't even managed to get in the top 100 airplay charts. Although maybe if you listen to AC Rock or triple A radio ( that have little impact on the main chart ) it was a hit there

Comparing it to their only true hit single in the U.S. is a bit unfair. I don't listen to any of the formats it was a hit on, but they are important formats (especially triple A, which historically is Coldplay's strongest format in the U.S.) Nonetheless, it reached #1 in something like 2 or 3 formats, recieved strong support from several key stations and is an RIAA certified platinum single. Coldplay have never been a strong singles band, especially in the U.S. Paradise may not have lit the top 100 on fire, but it did chart higher than most of their other singles, including many of the songs that are considered their major hits, did in the U.S.

Well , That's true. First of all , I think that Coldplay has been helped by the digital era , and that's mainly why Paradise and other songs have achived platinum status and so. I think that if Clocks or the scientist were released in the digital era they would have been certified platinum. So you can't really messure the success of Paradise and compare it to their past hits either lol.

What I'm saying is that , Paradise sure wasn't a hit on radio. I mean , it did reach #1 on triple A radio , but Triple A radio audience is very little , So you can have a number one smash on Triple A radio ( Or for example Rock AC ) and the impact be minimal

All true. I guess what I meant by Paradise being successful is that it was charting highly in the formats that have traditionally been strong for Coldplay here. Triple A, small though it may be, tends to be where Coldplay does better than anywhere else. It's also highly regarded (relative to it's audience size) within the industry as it tends to draw an older audience who still buy physical copies of music at a greater percentage than the general public.

MX is #11 on the Billboard 200 (climbed 28-14-11 in the last 3 weeks). Paradise went up from #29 to #20.

POC and CB haven't charted. :|

But ADELE... :o

It's 21's 21st week at #1 having sold 730,000 copies last week and 19 is #4, which is its peak position.

She has 3 (THREE!!!) singles in the top 10, which is the first time ever for a female artist.

Until now, no one besides the Beatles has had 2 top 5 albums and 3 top 10 singles simultaneously.

If they promote CB on the right way in Europe, and at the 'same' time POC on USA/CAN, MX's sales would go up.

I hope they end this era with 6 million copies sold.

In 8 weeks of 2012, they sold ~1.213.000 copies. If the sales keep on +/- 50.000 on the next 40 weeks (until the end of this year), they'll sell more 2 million copies.

Charlie Brown needs to get a TOP10 spot, like, immediately.

For some unknown reason they're stalling it. To some people it comes across as not caring about it. But it's pretty obvious that they love the song.

But not releasing it right now after the Brits is a mistake. If that info is right, they'll release it March 19th. FTW? :\

Yeah it is a Worldwide Chart.

You can find it here:

http://www.mediatraffic.de/albums.htm

More in-depth Chart Analysis can be found here:

http://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=81511&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=2025

They have been in the top 10 in WW sales pretty much the entire release of the album which is great.

Also, for CB, it looks like they would be releasing it in March.

From what I gather from this website:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/music-events/playlist/

Basically stating the new radio releases for the week of Feb.25th....and at the bottom it says:

"The Radio 2 playlist is one of the most varied of any radio station in the UK and can include albums as well as singles. Before any track can be considered it must be commercially available or be within 4 weeks of commercial availability. "

Implying that CB has to be released within 4 weeks of Feburary 25th...so most likely in March it will be released, but the exact date still not made official.

After the Brits, this is the result of sales in the UK:

MX at 6 in the Albums Chart (last week it was 11)

Paradise at 23 in the Singles Chart (last week it was 24)

Charlie Brown at 30 in the Singles Chart (last week it was 115)

"Coldplay’s pyrotechnic-filled show opener Charlie Brown, shoots up 85 places to Number 30, also with an uplift of 387%. Accompanying album Mylo Xyloto benefits from a 36% increase in sales since last week."

Where they are is damn good for 18 weeks out. Albums sell long after they're at the top of the charts. AROBTTH has sold almost 1 million copies in the U.S. alone in the last couple years and that's well after it's had any commercial impact. MX is at the part of it's lifespan where it should be starting to slide off the charts, but as long as the band tour it, it should keep doing alright.

Yeah, for 18 weeks (pretty much 4 months) to be in the top 10 in worldwide sales is pretty good.

The Tour starts next month and that should help to stabilize sales.

Also side note: For this week in WW sales, Whitney Houston has three albums in the top 10, pretty crazy. Additionally, all the other albums in the top 10 have just recently come out within the past month (except Adele).

good comment. Maybe on the next week the album returns to top 10 again. But I hope the sales won't fall too much.

Some notes:

MX may be on 4.350.000 with non-counted countries! ;)

On the 2011 Festival Tour they were watched by more than 1 million ppl live and 1 billion via Youtube/TV (Rock in Rio concert).

MXTour sold more than 1 million tickets before February.

Paradise is almost with 80 million views on Youtube. ETIAW with 33 million and Charlie with 6,5 million (9 million with live versions on official page).
