  • Lol I haven't been here in 5 years but I decided to pop my head back in for some nostalgia. Seems like this was my last post so here's an update... I finally saw Radiohead live in Manchester in 2017 a

^That makes me laugh. I'd love to see this picture.

But yeah, I have to agree with you guys. Coldplay are probably never going to be better than Radiohead simply because they can't get past that sort of self-conscious music-making. Nothing they make sounds like it's from a real, real person. I know I definitely don't think like a Coldplay song.

In most Radiohead songs I've heard, the lyrics and the music sound like life.

Does this make sense?

^ Yeah...well I don't know...to me Coldplay sound like this utopia sound where you are in jr. high and in love with everybody and hate everybody at the same time. Its not really reflective of real life. Radiohead songs on the other hand seem to capture the more realistic paranoid /cynic side of life and how things are run. But on the other hand they reveal beauty in more discrete but honest ways. In Rainbows for example sums this whole idea up I think.

They're just really different, that's all. They deal with different parts of life. (leaving out x&y- nothing like domestic stability for losing your edge) Coldplay's lyrics are about being the class nerd, being ignored, about insecurities, and mostly about getting your heart broken and knowing it was your fault. (Basically all of arobtth)

Radiohead and Thom deal with a whole different range of things. Things like serious depression (htdc) and (imo) being alone in a crowd- the worst kind of loneliness of all (iluvya). There's a lot of anger at the world at large, lots about the bigger picture. Lots of frustration. Really, the extremely personal stuff ended for the most part after the bends. After that when he does turn inwards, it's usually done very criptically.

I guess the way I've always thought about it is that Coldplay are all about the light at the end of the tunnel, and Radiohead are all about jumping up and down yelling "A train! A train is coming!"

I like having both around. And I think that in spite of some musical similarities, because they've chosen different directions, it's all apples and oranges.

bplah blah sick of this conversation haha loved it when Jonathan Ross said in the recent interview with Thom

"Thom of course is in the band Radiohead which, I think we all agree, are almost as good as Coldplay, They're one of the best bands in the country. Everyone agrees (laughter)"

:D

Ive been searching for 20 minutes but i cant find it! *argh*

Im sure ive got it somewhere on the computer.

^^^i completely agree with mo. i love both coldplay and radiohead to death, but i've just never seen how its viable to compare them. i think there are musical similarities in pablo honey and the bends a little bit, but beyond that i don't personally think you can really call coldplay copycats of radiohead. theyre not alike on a personal level at all, either, and mo's right about the music being about completely different things. in these ways, i really think it is apples and oranges: it's just not worth putting them next to each other because there aren't similarities anymore. even most of the media have dropped this "radiohead copycats" line, i think. i don't think that coldplay being more "catchy" and getting on the radio and being more mainstream makes them any less of a good band. i think i have a very different opinion of what "selling out" is compared to most people, but i've never seen why a band getting more famous and popluar is a bad thing. and i think coldplay are amazing and infinitely talented within the more mainstream genre, which is what matters. they don't sound like everyone else on the radio, or at least they didnt before all the coldplay-copiers sprang up, and that's what makes a difference to me.

it's true that radiohead are more revolutionary and legendary and groundbreaking, and that's what a large part of their appeal is based on: their "strangeness". they're freaking geniuses. sometimes i can't get over how brilliant their ideas are, how they make them work. but i don't think this makes them a quantitatively better band than anyone else simply because they're a bit off and push the envelope more. and i don't think being more mainstream makes coldplay any better than radiohead or any ofher band. i think i just take bands as bands and i don't generally compare them to each other simply because i don't think you can compare two bands to each other like we do so often with coldplay and radiohead. someone will always like one better than the other for some personal reason that can't be fully understood by anyone else.

i'm not saying stop debating, of course :D. by all means, debate on! i'm just saying that i think we should all just keep in mind that we're all right and we're all wrong. because sometimes (not right here, not right now) i think someone says something that touches a nerve in someone else and it can feel like a bit of a personal attack. i know people have gotten upset in the past. all i'm saying is that we should remember that we're discussing opinions, not debating hard cold facts.

now yall probably think i'm some sort of control freak or something...:D

bring on the shunning.

I scenserly doubt it, If you check out when Noel Galligar of Oasis called Radiohead out for 'you can write about the news all you want, nobody cares' Thom reponded with 'I went to music school, it taught me to respect other artists'

So I highly doubt Radiohead would hate a band, im sure they being geniuses can tell the differences between Coldplay and Muse and don't see them as rip offs and the fact that they all branched out from Radiohead's The Bends era sound. Im sure Radiohead respect them, as they respected REM and took some inspiration from them.

And plus I don't see the RH influence in Coldplay, I just see Travis and The Verve.

Perhaps Thom hates Chris as a person, not as a musician?

But .. what about Coldplay saying they'll make a more oblique album with some electronic sound or something? isn't that Radiohead-like?

I don't think it's that he hates him, I think it's more that he's annoyed by him.

could be. was there any interview when he said that?

^A lot of interviews where Thom is asked about them and rolls his eyes or sort of verbally shrugs. The way a person dodges a question when they don't want to say anything bad in public, but don't have anything good to say. I especially got a chuckle out of an amnesiac-era interview where Thom triumphantly said something to the effect of I'd like to see them try to copy us this time.

^ yeah I referenced that interview a couple posts back. I'll see if I can find it.

:D

Oh well. sometimes it's really better to say nothing than anything at all.

I wish more people would learn that.

Okay I found the interview....but its in 5 parts. Its interesting so I'm watching the whole thing.

I'll post a link to that quote though in a few minutes.

okay!

i need to watch it too, i think i havent seen it yet..

ooooh Jonny has this yellow t-shirt!!! :)
