I came across a few covers on YouTube by a few girls and everyone was bashing them. I thought 1 one really good but the others were...so so bad.

Having a different range than Chris, I sometimes change the key (I do UATW in G), and maybe purists might be against that. But if men cover women and women cover men, it shouldn't matter as long as it's decent quality.

I used to hate that song but I've heard it so much now (at malls, coffee shops, radio) that it finally grew on me and I actually like it now, haha.

Those "purists" are just haters. Obviously men change the key of songs when they cover women songs and vice versa (except in rare cases when the key works for most voices)
