WOW, what a day!

 

I saw Coldplay live at the Emirates in June so wasn't too fussed about not going to the Stockholm gig yesterday. But the day before the concert I start getting excited and if I am already going to be in Stockholm I might as well go. I wasn't really up for paying a lot of money for a ticket at such short notice.

 

I realised that the local radio station would be streaming the concert. I called and tried to get 'work experience' with them and be a type of assistant at the gig. I was on the phone with the radio producer responsible and was SOO close to getting a job at the gig. That failed though.

 

I was determined to go though so I started searching on Twitter to see if any companies were giving away tickets. Bjorn Borg (a Swedish underwear company) tweeted this:

 

 

I replied and was sure I wasn't going to win. It turns out that I was the ONLY person that replied.

 

Now I forgot one detail. I called the radio station replied to their tweet in ARGENTINA. I was flying back to Stockholm via Paris and landing in Sweden just 2.5 hours before Coldplay come on! It was just pure coincidence that I booked the flight for that day. I had no previous intention of going to the concert having already been in London various times but all the excitement on Facebook got me going.

 

When I got to Paris I checked my emails and realised I won. I had to quickly start ringing and emailing friends in Sweden who could pick up the tickets as I carried on my journey home.

 

I landed in Stockholm at 18.35 and my friend went to pick up the tickets. I got to the stadium to meet my friend at 20.15. 45 MINUTES BEFORE COLDPLAY CAME ON. We hadn't really gotten tickets, we had been given 'COLDPLAY WORKING' yellow wristbands for some reason which didnt feel very official. The man walked us into the FRONT CIRCLE! I felt so bad. The people in their were like the first 400 or so people who queued. BUT It WAS AWESOME! Arriving at 20.15 and being right by the end of main catwalk thing!

 

The concert itself was amazing. Just a great story. I always think the most exciting thing when seeing Coldplay is the BUILD UP. If it's queueing really early and meeting fans in the queue and running in to trying to find tickets and negotiating your way in. the whole build up to the shows is so exicitng :)

The evening's first act was the young British talent shot Charli XCX - you know she wrote Icona Pop's summer plague I Love It. Following appearances on both Hornstullstrand and Hultsfred Festival earlier this year, she played now facing its biggest ever audience Sweden. She interpreted through Echo and the Bunny Men's post punk 80's classic The Killing Moon without the weirdness. Her sometimes gothic, sometimes sleazy sugar sweet electropop may not directly involve all of the Coldplay fans who chose to come early (to be committed to the world's biggest bands is not always a rewarding task) but songs like Stay Awake and Nuclear Season is strong enough her to come away with a clear pass. During the last song You're the One, she begins tokdansa their gigantic platform shoes despite, unfortunately, does not exude Marina and the Diamonds who takes over the stage afterwards the same energy. She is just a shadow of its former self. Maybe it depends on the speaker system, but her voice is actually quite painful to listen to.

 

But when Coldplay well stepping on stage removes all doubt. Chris Martin is at stake mood and radiates an energy that few other front veterans are capable of when he throws himself around the stage. It had been distributed wristbands to all visitors. They all began to light up the Stockholm Stadion in different colors while Coldplay kicked off - which along with confetti, fire and laser lodged a powerful feeling.

 

Låtmässigt can discuss about Mylo Xyloto is the same class as their previous records but have seen the show invites Coldplay without a doubt one of the summer's best concerts. It is majestic from the first to the last moment.

 

Just as the euphoria from the concert start being ebb performed In My Place and the atmosphere is again on top. And if there is one word that describes Lovers in Japan, it is well just euphoria? We had certainly passed us without Rihanna-hologram of Princess of China and Paradise had hardly been necessary played twice (the second time was filmed there in charity), but it's such lågdalar you have to put up with in order to fully be able to appreciate such as Viva La Roomy, singing the allsångslåt, who even got the guards to sing along.

 

Possibly felt closure with Every Teardrop is a Waterfall by including Clocks and Fix You somewhat tame - not least in relation to the pompous introduction. When the lights came on again, I was not completely satisfied. Coldplay had been happy to continue to play the night out, but also the most beautiful dreams come to an end. And to see Coldplay live tonight feels just like a dream, everything is so uppvridet that I can hardly believe it's true. Coldplay have never been better live than they are right now.

Yesterday it was finally time for AW and see Coldplay at the Stadium. What a night! When you do something with the job and you have relatively low expectations, which usually means having fun. Yesterday was no exception. The actual dinner in the office as usual, right strained at first, but still nice. The concert was clearly above expectations, perhaps because no one really knew what they could expect. I like Coldplay, and has done so since Parachutes , but is not a huge fan so.

 

The concert was magical! We chose to stand right at the back, but looked good anyway and they did also some songs right next to us at a small extra scene in the middle of the crowd. :) Is sad that the phone battery ran out so I do not take short merciful when we were so close ... : (But the experience I have left in the heart forever! So good!

 

Everyone got a bracelet when we came in and they started flashing in different colors when they started playing. :) Really cool when the whole crowd blinked in the pace of the songs. :) They drove both old favorites and new. A really happy girl here in other words!

Last night Coldplay arrived at the big Stadion in Sweden. I got Coldplay tickets for my birthday from Henrik. I have been wanting to see them for soooo long and especially with him.

They were absolutely fantastic and the night was an unforgettable night. So many feeling and emotions, but yet so perfect. It really got me realizing that Henrik is by far the bestest friend I have. No one can feel and share my feelings as good as he can. He knows me inside and out. There is nothing in this world that I am afraid to say or do or be any other way, than just me, Stina Örwén with him.

So whatever may happen, no matter where the world may take us;

I still got to see coldplay with my soulmate, and that has been on my todo list since I was 14. (when I started listening to them.) :)

The quartet makes every song an encore.

Never thought I'd use these two words in the same sentence. But Coldplay is pure primordial force.

You can't defend yourself from this arena bang.

 

The start is nothing but phenomenal.

Like a runaway circus Coldplay turn up all controls they can find behind the huge Stadion stage. Everything's happening. Fireworks salsa dancing across the ceiling, the crowd neon glittering from the Coldplay controlled wristbands they got at the entrance and the band members peeping up among all the confetti that filled the arena aldready in the second song.

It's a bang. Even by stadium measures.

Now and then Coldplay's show is a monumental display of the band's live performances over the past five years. The explosions and the millimeter fitted choreography that only bands with many years experience of huge stages, a stable peak shape and a bit too much money can achieve.

 

"Choice of songs hampers"

Still the Brits don't make it all the way. When the band want to slow down halfway through at the end of the runway they don't lose energy only. The songs don't hit and Coldplay have to spend the same amount of time to get back on top that it took to play them.

Dynamic is needed, of course. But the choice of songs hampers a really great atmosphere.

Cause when it's back, as in the finale with "Every teardrop is a waterfall", Coldplay is an irresistable visual arena force few, U2 only, can reach today.

 

"Oversteered g-force"

In Copenhagen on Tuesday, the band almost hit the 5+ barrier (this newspaper's grading system). And when 33 000 Swedes in 15 minutes have created the same atmosphere as over 50 000 Danes did then, I truly believe the band will score.

 

Coldplay have polished all their arena manners and it's not just about fireworks, confetti, balloons and other proven megalomania. The London quartet makes every song an encore. The huge round screens filling almost the whole back of the stage makes the band's presence burning and some songs sounds like an oversteered g-force about to push them through the ground.

Pitch dark at Stadion, only mobile phones glowing. Then it breaks loose. Coldplay light up the thousands of wristbands people got at the entrance - and turns the arena into a neon glittering inferno. While the fireworks explode over Stadion. This is truly one of the most powerful opening numbers I've seen a band at this level do.

Second song. Second time with goosebumps, already. Coldplay swirling around in an annual consumption of confetti. Chris Martin seem to be really on tonight. Just like the crowd.

Martin sucking up a bit for the crowd andsays we chose Coldplay over Gaga. Blood coloured stage that would make even Kent (Swedish band) proud. Amazing heat, volume and joy at Stadion.

Balloon party Coldplay style. Beach balls, confetti and a bass drum rough as a musk ox bubbling around at Stadion.

I love this thunder nugget. Coldplay drag down this song at the bottom of Kiruna’s mining caches. Where not even Markus Larsson can find it. So enormously heavy.

Coldplay are at the far end of the runway, and Rihanna dominates on the gigantic screens. The solution is so brilliant that at times Chris Martin almost seems to be singing duet with her live. Another heavy version. And the best Rihanna has done on a Swedish stage this summer.

Coldplay remain at the far end of the runway and with their drum-digital sniuggle. This song is not elevating tonight – and never is.

"Warning sign"

Coldplay are clearly right to slow down the tempo of the concert a bit before moving on. But there are better songs for doing this.

Better, but still the night’s lukewarmest moment together with ”Up in flames”.

Chris Martin bounces up from hibernation and gets both the audience and the rest of the band with him. A much needed upbeat.

Like a four-minute-long and pulsing pop force. Just as much handclaps and singalong / communal singing as Coldplay at the Stadium. Chris Martin lands lying on the floor. .

One of the night’s most visual numbers. Flashing wristbands, pulsing stage and a neon uncle walking through some sort of digital evolution on the screens. Effective.

I found a video of Chris' speech before they played Paradise the second time, so I thought I'd share (since the livestream host blocked it out with their rambling and many people complained about that...) Copying it by ear:

 

"Now, if it's okay with you guys, we have to do something strange because there is a TV show in America called Stand Up To Cancer, which is a big cancer benefit which is happening next week, and they asked us if we would play on it. We said, 'we'd love to', we said, 'please can we record it from Sweden?' And... *crowd goes wild* because not only is (are) the crowds in Sweden very loud, they're also extremely attractive... and look very good on TV. So... *laughs**crowd cheers louder* So they said, 'of course you can! Please, have as many Swedish people as you can in our TV broadcast'. So what we're gonna do now is that I have to say something, like, TV thing, and we're gonna play Paradise again. And I know some of you will be like, 'fuck, I don't wanna hear that song again', but the rest of you will go crazy because it sounds even better the second time."

 

I'm not sure if that was the end of it, because the video cut there, but that was basically it except for his TV lines.

COLDPLAY AT STADION, STOCKHOLM

 

Thirty three thousand luminous wristbands flashing like neon coloured sprinkles over Stadion when Coldplay shoots off fireworks during "Hurts like heaven". An absolutely magnificent way to kick off a concert, impossible to protect yourself from.

 

The fact that Coldplay works so amazingly well as an arena rock band isn't a given. They are strangely anonymous to be one of the world's biggest bands: four guys in jeans and random t-shirts with mediocre hairstyles. Not even Chris Martin is really very charismatic, even if he tries hard with his straddle-legged jumping across the stage. His singing is good but not exciting; his voice is strong, firm, pure, neat and a bit.. wholesome. Especially when it echoes compact and evenly thick over the arena.

 

But this is also the key to Coldplay's success. Had they made worse songs, they'd be a third rank Snow Patrol, but with brilliantly talented weeping emo radiohits like "The Scientist", "Paradise" and "Clocks" the boy next door-look works perfectly and makes Coldplay sympathetic and easy to identify with.

 

The roar from 33 000 when "Viva la vida" starts is magic. Chris Martin is running across the stage with his arms stretched out like a small arena rock airplane, pretends to stab himself with an imaginary dagger and finally collapses on the floor, twisting as in a satisfying perverted autoerotic sexual act while the crowd continues to sing the "ooh-ooh-ooh-"loop to him again and again. It's indescribably magnificent and delicously bombastic. Maybe you could grieve over the loss of the subtlety in the songs. The "Viva la vida" singalong could just as well be "Seven nation army", and the concert a football derby.

 

And the extravagant scenography and show, so colourful it sometimes looks like a giant kids party (especially when the crowd is given balloons to play with) balance it, and it's understandable that Coldplay during most of the concert ??? like rock music's tank. The big gestures are necessary.

 

And it is when the band tries to bate the intensity with a slower part, closely together at the end of the runway like a relaxed jamming-in-rehearsal-band, it gets most boring.
