The Myths and the Muse

by Dylan Young

Rising U.K. mystery men Muse debunk a few of the rumours

When Muse first hit the scene back around the late '90s, the pundits were trying to stuff them into the Radiohead camp of crooning angst-rockers. For the lads of Muse, it seemed like a bit of a dismissal.

"Don't get me wrong, we like Radiohead," admits Muse drummer Dominic Howard. "It just sort of misses the point to lump us in with the easiest reference of the day."

Fair enough. The lads have come a long way since then and longer still from their youthful days kicking around the South Devonshire fishing village of Teignmouth. Radiohead only comes up now as a vague reference to singer Matthew Bellamy's vocal qualities. Muse have become a force of their own and people have taken notice. They've pulled mad laurels from the critics, locking in Best British Band at 2001's Kerrang! Awards (and nominations in Best Live Act and Best Album), Best Live Act and Best Album nominations at the Q Awards and Best New Band in the 2000 NME Carling Premier Awards.

Their unique blend of rock largesse and baroque-inspired classical arrangements has lifted them up in some quarters to the point where they're being hailed as the emo Queen. It's debatable how close that hits the mark - certainly the ornamentation is there but Muse seem to be stalking darker vamps than Freddy Mercury's.

The band have been pals since they were 13. Matthew Bellamy is rumoured to have begun his career warbling accompaniment to the witching chants of a trio of Wiccan sylphs. Howard laughs coyly when I broach the subject.

"Yeah.

That's sort of true," he begins. "Teignmouth is very small. There's not much to do as teens. You can lose yourself in drugs and alcohol or do something creative, make your own diversions. That seemed like a better option than getting messed up and being thumped by lads five years older. It was a school thing. There was all this creativity being expressed around us: theatre, people making music, poetry, art. There was a lot free expression. These three girls decided to start doing these Wiccan rituals and Matt helped out. The band came about after that. We're the only ones left from that scene."

And in 2004, Muse were touring on The Cure's Curiosa tour?

"Yeah."

I am missing something here?

"I don't think so. I'm not quite sure what you mean."

Before arriving at Muse, the band cycled through a roster of names, each farther from the simplicity of the one they landed on - and more sinister. How did they go from being Rocket Baby Dolls and Gothic Plague to Muse?

"Well... for one, those names were shit," Howard deadpans, then laughs.

"How we got the name is a bit of an old wives' tale. Back when there was all that creativity going on, there was this old man who used to hang around. He was just this old fellow who was really interested in what the kids were getting up to, all of the funny things we were inventing. He told us that it was very unusual to have so many people being creative in such a small place, that there had to be some spirit inhabiting the town. Looking back it was kind of remarkable, the amount of energy being expended that way. He used to say that the village had been taken by a muse. That's how we arrived at the name."

So you took the name and now you're the only ones from that golden age of Teignmouth still going?

"Yeah."

Well?

"It's sort of spooky if you put it like that."

hahaha  i like this part of an interview on muse board

Do the songs have titles?

''We don't have names for them yet,'' says Bellamy. ''I always leave the titles 'til the end.''

Which leads him to this story: ''At our shows fans will record , and then they will turn up on the Web with what the fans think are the titles. We have a crew member named Dez, and he some keyboards. For one of the new songs we taped a message on his keyboard, 'Dez, change the patch here,' to remind him what to play at a certain point in the song. So that new song showed up with the title 'Dez, change the patch here.' Everyone's written about it on the Web. Everyone's looking for some deep meaning.''

 everybody asking what 'des' means  :P

Oh Mr. Bellamy!!! You clever dog you! :P

I just realized.....
