Okay so now U ime obitelji removed that ad from everywhere and they're asking an apology from The xx, saying that they've never used their song.

The referendum is tomorrow.

I can't believe those people give out so much effort to deny someone's right, imagine the level of unawareness and the amount of ignorance it takes to do it. I refuse to believe it is sheer hatred that propels them to do that kind of cruelty.

It passed. Don't consider me Croatian anymore. I can't believe how people here are stupid.

That referendum question is so misleading. You can believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman but also back gay marriage. Just not indulge in it yourself and want to live in a secular society which allows others to make their own decision on the matter. It should have straight up asked 'do you want to ban gay marriage?'

But anyway, everyone knows what they were voting on and the impact it would have so arguing on semantics seems feeble given how strong the victory was for the ****s.

Ugh. I'm so sorry. What the hell is wrong with Croatians?

If you have BBC Four, don't miss "Don't ever wipe tears without gloves". Very good Swedish drama, first episode tonight at 10pm.

Hopefully it'll be on the BBC iplayer and available in other countries too, don't know.

Welcome to the thread. And thank you for that. I will try and catch it.

Haven't been around these parts of the forum in awhile, but when I saw the thread I had to read everything and also I have the need to comment the latest fiasco in Croatian politics.

The problem is that this isn't even the question of changing law but referendum required the change of Constitution. The Constitution that in its preamble clearly states that all human rights will be protected. And now we are clearly going to suppress a minority of people. What sickens me the most is the fact that many people equalize homosexuality to pedophilia. Its so sad and disappointing.

Although it came out today that the current government will try to pass the law which will enable homosexuals to legalize their relationships it just won't be called marriage. That's something positive coming out from this country. But they will need the majority in the parliament for the law to pass and 104 out of 151 MPs voted for this referendum to pass. So there's no majority to back the law. I hope some will change their opinions.

The country that so wishes to be Western but its so behind Europe that its just sad.

It must be so frustrating. I get annoyed in my country but I'm glad we are as far as we are. Everyone must keep pushing, though.

But the worst thing might be, that people realised how easy it is to organise referendums in this country. They already collected enough votes to make the government organise a referendum against the cyrillic script. Which uses a really small minority of people who live on the Serbian border.

It's a similar situation over here but they stopped doing referendums because they realised the only thing that happens is that the country loses money because of stupid shit.

Sorry for being so.... off-topicky.

I think it's a symbol of solidarity and saying there is nothing to be afraid of, both the attraction and the act, even when removed from actual sexuality.

Obviously there are other issues to be discussed about such tactics in PR, such as potential trivialisation of the subject and other things, but I think above is the general idea.

the australian high court ruled that the ACT's (state that contains canberra) laws that enabled same sex marriage were not valid earlier this week

not a please at all, some people got married within that timeframe too and will prob face anullments

The high court ruled unanimously on Thursday that the ACT law could not sit concurrently with the federal provision that marriage is between a man and a woman, and the entire ACT law “is of no effect”. The court said the federal parliament had the power under the constitution to legislate on same-sex marriage and the federal Marriage Act was a “comprehensive and exhaustive statement of the law of marriage”.

US: Florida bill would make it illegal for transgender people to use public toilets

A bill has been submitted in Florida that would make it a crime for transgender people to use public toilets.

Miami Republican Frank Artiles submitted a bill to the Florida House of Representatives yesterday, which would make it a crime for trans people to use single-sex facilities in workplaces, schools or any business that is open to the public.

Trans people who violate the law could be jailed for up to a year, charged with a misdemeanour and fined $1000.

The bill would apply to “bathrooms, restrooms, dressing rooms, fitting rooms, locker rooms and showers” – meaning trans people would be unable to go to the toilet, shop, or go to the gym.

HB 538 states: “The purpose of this act is to secure privacy and safety for all individuals using single-sex public facilities.

“Single-sex public facilities are places of increased vulnerability and present the potential for crimes against individuals using those facilities, including, but not limited to, assault, battery, molestation, rape, voyeurism, and exhibitionism.

“Sex means a person’s biological sex, either male or female, at birth.

“Single-sex public facilities designated for girls, women, ladies, or persons of the female sex shall be restricted to persons who are biological females.

“Single-sex public facilities designated for boys, men, gentlemen, or persons of the male sex shall be restricted to persons who are biological males.

“A person who knowingly and willfully enters a single-sex public facility designated for or restricted to persons of the other biological sex commits a misdemeanor of the first degree.”

The proposed law is strikingly similar to satirical musical Urinetown, in which the establishment regulates and aggressively cracks down on toilet use.
