It's like a muscle to train. It takes time to develop. To be mindful throughout the day is tough. Back when I began I used to use post it or small notes I would put everywhere in the home and where I worked. That helped some. You can also try alarms on your phone to do small sessions throughout the day. Just a few minutes but repeated often. This can slowly get your brain trained to be mindful.

As Jedi Leo says, it's like a muscle to train... That observing of the mind and it's state(s) during the mindfulness sessions, start applying that to the rest of your day... When you're stuck in traffic - what is the mind thinking? Is it bored, irritated, appreciative of something beautiful nearby? Or when you're talking to someone and start developing an emotion (particularly a strong one) - what is the thought process leading to that? Or when doing something repetitive eg walking - are you concentrating on walking - in the moment, or is the head wandering off somewhere else...

Well said. I always wonder what is that inside of him because when you look from the outside, he could be the happiest man in the world, not only having material/economic benefits, which MOST of the world doesn`t have, but he was also born in caring and healthy family, got well educated, surrounded with music, has healthy children and plays music with his best friends, his brothers...so I wonder where all those suffer which he talks about a lot come from? And how come that he`s SO sensititve towards the others who suffer? If he had disfunctional family and childhood or was raised in poverty I would understand that, but without that it`s really strange and unusual and even more beautiful, I`m grateful that he feels for others and gives us so much emotions.

I wonder whether some of that "normal", "happy" childhood actually turned out to be that normal or happy at all... Iirc, his parents have split up (although I'm not sure when), maybe bullying in school was an issue, and maybe one of the parental relationships was not particularly ideal... Just pure speculation of course, but some possible explanations... It would also explain his beautiful relationships with the rest of the band, particularly Jonny. I will end on this nice note!

True. His parents split a few years ago,I guess it was really everything fine during childhood. I mean he hadn't

suffered bigger traumas I guess. I wanted to say that his deepness is too deep for some normal person who had normal life, let say so. I just wonder... Psychology ;)

I don't agree with that. I know many persons who had normal lives on the surface but think a lot and deeply about life. Me included :)

I believe most people actually do think a lot but if you don't know them well enough you'll never guess.

I had a normal life and I'm also deep, but he is above the average,I compare him to great writers,thinkers,philosophers..and I try to find that x factor in Chris Martin ;)

"I" is only an identification by ego level's illusions -- most of our emotions, thoughts, reactions, instintive reactions are confined by/stemmed from the ego level, until the soul wakes up. .

Agreed. Most of our thoughts, emotions, etc are not in line with the soul but with our limited self (ego), however as we awaken the soul, we also allow the soul to seep through and have an active conscious involvement in our creations (thoughts, emotions, etc), so that who we are becomes a true reflection of our soul. I think we are ultimately all an expression of the same "soup" of energy (where there is no individualisation), but as souls we each are unique expressions of this energy, with our very own traits which then are unchangeable throughout. And I love Rumi btw :)

People who really take the time to search within themselves for their soul and intuition really are the most highly creative, unusual people. I think most people don't really take the time to look.

But then there's Chris. You can see his soul tangled up in his music. I wondered what draws people so much to certain bands, or artists sometimes. I don't think it's just the "trends", but more of a change in the wavelength that people seem to be drawn to. In the most technical terms his music really isn't of the highest quality (compared to the legends), but people are still drawn to it. But why is that? Why did they become so popular? Anyone might say that it has to do with the trends they follow, "vague lyrics" and how well one can relate to their songs. Anyone can list the variables and circumstances that were involved in Coldplay's rise to fame, but "there must be something more". As vast as the popular music industry seems, it's actually very small. Very few people get worldwide success, but why? Music that is written genuinely through one's intuition and spirit must be the most attractive then. People can identify when an artist spills out their soul, and they could feel their own pooling up with it. Now I don't know if you could say the same for some other pop artists, but regardless of the quality there must be some sort of weird connection that gets drawn that's unexplainable by science or tangible circumstances.

^ I know I feel a very strong emotional (and worldview) connection with this band - not just CM and his lyrics, but the way the whole band express themselves, both individually and as a group... I love the way they operate (and it spills into their music), and how they have developed musically over the years - they are always open to new things, work hard to master / be good at things (ie reach competency), always show a loving tenderness and compassion (particularly to each other), and express themselves very emotionally through music... That interplay of emotion between CM's singing + Jonny's guitar in the earlier years, and now individually between everyone in the band is just beautiful to watch.. I am soo drawn to that!

So much philosophy and deep thoughts... It's hurting my brain :D

I totally agree. People usually don`t take time to search within themselves, especially I`ve never seen "a star", music or a movie star, who reflects and goes deep so much as Chris does. I admire that they dare to be themselves in the world of music industry full of trends which promote power, ego and sex through music and music videos. Among all of that Coldplay shows up with flowers, angels wings and stars promoting compassion, humbleness, thoughtfulness, friendship and brotherhood.

All of that is not done randomly just by case, sometimes it seems that they intentionally work on that. Like they work on a mission of sending message to the world and leaving signs of love everywhere. I see how it is hard in everyday life when you care about details and show emotions and affection, when you try to live a deeper meaning, it may be strange and unusual.

I can imagine what it`s been like for them in music industry before, apart from becoming popular and awarded they also showed their humbleness, truthfulness and vulnerabity.

Yeah, it's a gradual practice.

Thinking can be a difficult experience to note and the greatest distraction for some. Are you noting thinking when you're thinking about whether your being mindful or the progress your making? Mindfulness is moment to moment so you can't 'keep it'. You're either mindful in one moment or not. You're trying to create a habit of you're mind noting and being aware of every experience.

Hope that helps :)

Now who's got that experience [emoji14]

You're trying to create a habit of you're mind noting and being aware of every experience.

Yeah it is a new habit to create as well as trying to break the old habit of a lifetime of NOT being aware, so its a double work! No wonder it takes so long to get some tangible long lasting results, so I guess its useful to keep the focus on the long term hehe But it is absolutely possible. I did not think it was once, but I was gladly surprised that I was wrong.

Also often its hard to stay conscious and mindful of unpleasant thoughts and feelings. The natural reaction of our mind is to run from those, so I found it useful back when I began to make an extra effort to try and stay with something that is unpleasant (sitting with the poison comes to mind hehe) namely because thats where the mind is more likely to wander off.

Yeah, same here. It can be very difficult!

That's what I thought of too when I heard that lyric! Being objective and understanding it will solve the problem, rather than being averted to it. In the case of pain, practicing mindfulness and being with it instead of popping a headache pill :)

Well now I would not advocate against medication when needed LOL But Im sure you meant it metaphorically haha

To me more than being objective and understand it will solve the problem (which I agree is an important part), I find the hardest is simply to stay with the unpleasant feeling instead of pushing it away. Someone could tell you hey keep your hand on the flame because its good for you ultimately, but even if you might know that your body will instinctively withdraw your hand because it naturally wants to escape pain (unrealistic example but u know what i mean I hope LOL). its that instinctive automatic reactive behaviour I found the hardest to re-train, but yeah practice makes perfect eh? :)

He's been through a lot. But a public image is just that. It's easy to have a public persona once they are trained on it.

Seems like a nice guy away from the cameras though. Just wish he didn't try so hard to try and please everyone

Speaking of mindfulness, have you read Wakening Awareness by Anthony de Mello? He speaks about that and his other books also do.

Yeah that's true. Being that "extroverted nice guy that everyone likes" sets certain expectations and can really put pressure on someone.

But I'm sure Chris must have done some serious soul searching and carefully made certain decisions about his attitude towards life and his relationships to become the man he is today.

And on the topic of mindfulness, this is the first time I've actually heard of it. What does it mean to be aware? Is it not focusing on the future or the past, only the present? Or is it something deeply psychological that I can't seem to pinpoint?

Yes,I think it is focusing on present, but above that, being aware of your emotions, thoughts, actions, getting to know yourself deeply and your surrounding also, and that probably would lead towards getting aware of soul, spiritual life,God or eternity.
