Sheep Pens

 

In a field a farmer has a number of sheep and a number of sheep pens.

If he puts 7 sheep into each pen, one sheep is left over.

If he puts 9 sheep into each pen, one pen is left over

How many sheep and how many pens are in the field?

 

What difference dows it make anyway

 

* The sum of two numbers is 20 and their difference is 2. What are the numbers?

* What would be two numbers be if the difference were 3?

* What would the two numbers be if the difference were 4.6?

I started doing that stuff but then I realized that I get enough aggravation out of the math that I'm required to do, so I quit. :P

 

The second part is pretty easy though:

- 11 and 9

- 11.5 and 8.5

- 12.3 and 7.7

 

aaaaaaand for the first part I'm going to take a shot in the dark, even though I just said I wasn't going to. :rolleyes:

 

64 sheep and 9 pens... I think that works.

the first part.... there are 36 sheeps and 5 pens! so... Mr. Peed you are wrong!

 

(7sheep x 5pens) = 35 sheep and one left over

 

(9sheep x 4pens) = 36 one pen left over!

here's the working to the first part.

 

Let x be the total number of sheep.

Let y be the total number of pens.

 

using algebra... we get these 2 equations.

 

7y+1=x

9(y-1)=x

 

then using simultaneous equations... we get ...

 

x=36

y=5
