Actually, a lot of people here do the BBQ thing. Eat food. Have fun. Hang out with the fam or friends. And if they they feel like it, they'll either shoot off fireworks or watch them downtown. Here they shoot em off at the lake. Watch people sing the national anthem on the tv (in Washington DC :) )... etc etc
