still an album out next year also.... confused?
Definitely happy with what we have now. Far more than we bargained for! Frick I thought they'd just release another normal album in late 2020 or later with a bunch of restless hype beforehand. But we got it far earlier than expected AND we have two singles AND they're both experimental or deviate from their previous works in some form that's unique AND it's a freaking double album with 16 songs! AND as if that wasn't enough there's ANOTHER supposedly brand new bonus track on the Japanese deluxe version! I was just saying, you felt that there wouldn't be a double album and that was wrong, maybe you felt wrong about there not being another album in the near future too even though that's definitely too much to ask as they've done fantastic this blooming era so far

LP8 Thread - Everyday Life
When I started out on this forum I thought it was really strict so I made sure not to swear or act out of order of any kind. TBH I'm kind of surprised this forum doesn't censor words like that either, although I'm also glad. Read some of these other people's comments for him. He's a REALLY talented artist who has a very good knowledge of chord and harmony, music theory etc. Don't get too hyped but he's even experimented with microtonality before, and I will be blown the frick away if there's a Coldplay song featuring that (however unlikely that is, but you never know, he IS Jacob Collier after all) WHAT?!!?!!?! I've literally watched this video twice and REALLY like that he's able to explain all these concepts at each level. I always found it very interesting. NOW I know where my memory of the name came from. I NEVER would have guessed it came from this video, I could have sworn I heard some of his music before! THANK YOU! It's "experimental" and "less experimental" For real? Like every single key that's ever existed and every mode and chord? Knows if OFF HAND? Any videos I can watch on this? I knew he was good. But I didn't know he was THAT good. HYPE! Here's hoping for some more extra tracks this time around, good to hear that we'll have at least 15 more songs, and likely another full song as well if it only ends up being around 12 or 13 more actual songs. Wonder why it's always on the Japanese edition that gets more songs? AFAIK only Coldplay has done that, although others deluxe albums are just everywhere (although I think GS deluxe was Target as well......) So he's an electronic engineer as well?!!?!?!?!?!?!? I always wondered what, and if, that meant anything for an abbreviation. Glad to know that it was (and to nobody's surprise it's the Japanese version of the site that gives us that information ) I for one am excited for this. Hopefully it means that Will might be experimenting with taking more of a minimalistic approach to percussion, restricting himself in ways that might make him more creative. Even though it might be percussion driven. It might mean that he'll be using other instruments besides the standard drum set.

Arabesque - Sunrise
As @Famous Old Painter said, hard disagree. If people don't want others to play any instruments on Coldplay albums Davide Rossi should stop collaborating and bands should never use orchestras ever again. They should never bring in any extra collaborators or singers, and Coldplay should definitely stay within their comfort zone and reject any work from other acts. Instead they should use electronic samples if they want strings or brass or anything else they can't play themselves. Then far more people, including me (and I bet you as well), would be whining about how flat, unauthentic, and uninspiring it sounds (the vast majority of electronic samples or created sounds don't even come close when replicating a real instrument, as I'm sure we can all attest if we've listened to enough pop radio) and wished they would have brought in some people to actually play the parts. Believe me, I'm a proponent of reduced pop collaboration because it seems like the more pop/rap acts are involved in a song the worse it gets. But with all other collaborations, I say the more the merrier. There would have been so many cursed missed opportunities had Coldplay just shut themselves off from collaboration altogether, and their sound I think would be much more bland and similar to the past (for the people who think they want that, no, I guarantee you you'd be sick and tired of the same thing over and over again and would want them to push into experimental territory as they've done on Viva and other songs, including the most recent one this thread is dedicated to). So overall I'm definitely open to more collaboration than less. Funny because that's the exact same thing two people I showed this song to said. They both enjoyed it but they definitely noticed the massive switch and could hardly believe it was actually Coldplay. When I first listened to the song I was like "there's no way, this is too freaking good to be true, this is an entirely unprecedented sound from these guys" Not surprised your 4 year old likes it either, younger kids are usually more open minded to different types of music. This has seemed to carry into a slightly older age for me. :) I like that they used different instruments, these sections are virtually unheard of in modern popular music and especially in an older band style I don't think that's ever been on the radio before, and for what's considered generally a radio friendly band to do this is crazy. Obviously they have their own signature touch on it as with everything but it's much less noticeable here (Chris' voice still shines through very clearly and obviously though). I usually don't like abrupt endings, they've affected two of the best songs from the previous era (and I know one was for a reason, that it led into the intro of the next song on the record), but considering how the song built up I'm surprised I actually like it! It dies away quite quickly but not too fast as to be annoying. Perhaps it will segue nicely into the next song, but Orphans does that too. Maybe all of these songs were meant to be listened to together as a full piece! Which song from him? I'd like to check it out. Oh boy, you wouldn't wanna listen to some of the stuff I listen to. 10 minute long instrumental sections. :joy: It is a little lengthy for just a single instrument solo and I noticed it went on a little but I'm glad they got across all the ideas they wanted to! I think it sounds more "full" and fleshed out that way and carries a mild tension to it where you kind of get surprised at the length of the solo, then you're awaiting the next part or for something to evolve and then it does. I think these sorts of lengthy solos aren't too uncommon in this style of music though so I'm not surprised. I thought some parts of Orphans could be extended (can't wait for the instrumentals to be released) but it is the radio single for right now so it's no surprise it's a little short (already heard it once on Alt Nation the other day).

This or That?
This would be a clear decision for most people I feel but this one's actually really close for me. I like soda's taste, but to be honest Imma have to go with water because it's healthy and very refreshing, where soda feels like it coats my teeth and harms me in more ways than one. Whereas water is necessary for survival, soda isn't. :joy: Wild or mellow?

So maybe there is a chance that your feelings are off about them not releasing another album next year too! :D

Orphans (Official Video)
One thing I noticed similar about Christmas Lights and this new era is that the beginning of Christmas Lights had that vinyl thing playing or whatever just like the new lyric vids do. That's a really cool interpretation of the rotating parts in the video @shred, I never really thought about that before. It was definitely an interesting choice and one that grew on me after it happened a few times. Perhaps it also represents thinking about getting "drunk with their friends" again as the whole band is also jamming out in that room and IIRC the chorus lines up with those scenes as well.

LP8 Thread - Everyday Life
I notice some people talking about the positions of Orphans and Arabesque on Sunset and Sunrise. I'd have to say that sonically speaking both feel most fit on the Sunrise side, and to be clear I am very obsessive over the setting in which certain songs are played so I've got this nailed down lol. But maybe it's a part of some other album theme we're not aware of yet..... Some people were also mentioning the possibility of Arabesque being a one off and I REALLY hope that isn't the case. Seeing as the theme of this album seems to be old style like 20's band and the cover reflects that this probably won't be a one off but this is what I thought when I heard the song and especially when I seen that Orphans was more poppy. I hope they've learned their lessons from last time and will give us a few songs of something we've NEVER expected from them before (the last direction I expected them to go was in the old style band direction, I really liked this curveball! I thought it was too good to be true when I first listened to Arabesque and totally thought I was being fooled by some fake upload before checking the channel, seeing it was verified and seeing all the videos I'd known and loved on there! I was still in disbelief and thought something wasn't right about this even two minutes into the song!

Orphans (Official Video)
Caught the premiere last night. One of the most unique music videos from them. I liked the combination of the different scenes and kind of the demo-ey footage at the beginning as well as a more acoustic stripped take on the song. I found the rotating upside down a little disorienting but after it happened a few times I got the point.

still an album out next year also.... confused?
@IcebatofvalikinRRBZ8 Agreed about SJLT, and it probably will be considering it's their latest massive mainstream hit and most people who aren't too deep fans of the band like it. I like it myself but I can see why others wouldn't, @Zero Theory I thought Warning Sign was one of their never played songs? Also they must have cut IMP sometime during the last tour because I think I remember them doing a stripped cover of it on the C stage at least 1 night I went to the AHFOD concerts. @elroy bo Same. 16 songs is a lot for just an album for Coldplay so I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't hear anything else for some time. This was definitely more of a surprise release, at least for me, than AHFOD though (thought it would be at least another year) so I was delighted to hear it would be released on the 22nd of next month. So maybe it is just something short before they make a more mainstream album more suitable for the stadiums. Perhaps that's more what the Sunrise and Sunset idea is about, that Sunrise having Arabesque on it would be more the experimental side, and Sunset having Orphans would be more the mainstream side. This makes more sense to me personally but I'd be glad to be proven wrong as we can never have enough Coldplay! If they do choose to go more mainstream either on Sunset or another album I still hope they find a way to introduce something exciting into the songs that will keep fans wishing for more experimentality happy. I think they struck a good balance with Orphans myself, Guy is more present and there are some interesting production qualities that make it stand out from their previous pop rock.

Another thing: it's definitely rare to see an album of this length from Coldplay so I'll definitely take it. 16 tracks suggests it could be a little longer but hey.

LP8 Thread - Everyday Life
Let's remember Mylo supposedly had 14 tracks but a few ended up being instrumental intros to the main songs, so it might be something similar here as well. I'd consider 16 tracks enough for a double album but I wonder how many of these are those kinds of tracks. Hopefully none and they keep them in the songs themself but you never know. Or hopefully those tracks contribute to the album in some way outside of acting as instrumental intros. Coldplay isn't the strongest band lyrically so other could definitely do it, but this sounds more like a radio single to introduce people to the sound of this album in more of a pop friendly way, hence the youthful lyrics of the intro. I think despite the cringe of some of the lyrics, there's more to dig into as the song's more than just about wanting to be young again and getting drunk, it's about orphans of war which is a topic I'm glad Coldplay's exploring as they've definitely become more socially and politically conscious over the years, especially the past few. Again the lyrics could have been better and more nuanced but Coldplay's not necessarily known for lyrical subtlety and ingenious, especially as of late. It's perhaps too bad but ah well.

LP8 Thread - Everyday Life
Keep in mind music is subjective, so for some the songs we heard will end up being our favorite, but I suppose out of that many tracks there must be at least another which is better. Only time will tell. Those 5 tracks will be at the bottom of others' list's, who knows? I guess that's half the reason they released it under a different name anyhow. This sounds like "world music-inspired pop" too but with less of a focus on the mainstream pop elements and more of a focus on experimental soundscapes and alternative textures, has more of an indie vibe to it. Yep. That's why much of pop music is so forgettable these days, there's nothing extra in the production quality that makes it replayable and it just gets boring and stale after a while. But the best music I find has those different aspects that keep it not only replayable and fun but fresh for years to come. Like years after I heard Paranoid Android I heard a very very subtle robotic voice in the background, like it's musically freaking ingenious (nothing surprising from Radiohead).

Another thing I forgot to mention. For Coldplay to experiment with different languages is something, well not unprecedented per se as they've been becoming more of an international act in recent years, but this is something unheard from them before and I totally agree this is still something very unique for them. I know right? Just having the sax solo wasn't enough for them, they even threw in some ambient guitar texturing to round out the sound. This is something I totally wouldn't have expected from them anytime soon. I'm so so glad they didn't follow the Los Unidades sound for this album. I am SUPER hyped. Totally rounds out the song IMO. It would have been decent without it but this totally just completes the song and is my favorite part to have an energetic outro like that. I was looking at the length of the song and was wondering what was so special they could have introduced to make the song a little longer than a few verses and a couple choruses, and when this part hit it did not disappoint. This song would not be complete without this part and I'm glad I heard this in here. Props Coldplay.

Yep. I prefer music with explicit lyrics if they have them there though, but it's good to know Coldplay will still retain their family friendly sound for those that consider them a safe choice because of this.

Love Arabesque. Such a different style for Coldplay, although it's no surprise it comes from the VLV era then. I like how they mix that old style saxophone with some newer production qualities such as the ambient textures created by the guitar and whatever else throughout the song, as well as the street intro. I also like how the end just builds up to an energetic climax with more emotion being released through the spontaneous use of swearing. Lyrics are sparse but effective. Orphans is a little more what we expected from Coldplay, although it still has some interesting production qualities that make it stand out from previous Coldplay works: specifically, it sounds like a song more from an indie rock band, rather than the mega pop sound of AHFOD. Lyrics are definitely sub par, with them recycling their beat to death "woo hoo"'s (which isn't necessarily a bad thing if it sounds fun, which it does) and that they want to know when they can get drunk again or whatever, which is suspiciously reminiscent of HFTW's cringy lyrics (both in chorus). Other than that it's an innocently youthful pop-rock song, nothing that we haven't heard before though. I do like this song too all in all. A nice bass groove to go along with, I'm noticing Guy has a stronger influence in these two songs at least than most of Coldplay's music. Nothing wrong with having yet another fun happy-go-lucky mini pop rock anthem for my playlists. :) Now let's just hope Arabesque isn't a one off as we've seen too many times with previous Coldplay albums, and that it's the rule as opposed to the exception (which might be a little more likely seeing as their album cover reflects this kind of music.....)

LP8 Thread - Everyday Life
Agreed. I'm so proud of Coldplay for manning up and finally being able to swear in their lyrics, but this just looks so wacky for a Coldplay album to have a Parental Advisory sticker when they have a reputation for being family friendly :joy::joy::joy::joy::joy:
