Everyday Life and depression
Alright so firstly I am so sorry to hear this. I think I heard you mention that somewhere before here tbh. It wasn't something I thought much about though. I swear I remember you saying this though. But in any case I am so sorry for you and I sincerely hope you do get better soon, because mental illness SUCKS and I can speak from experience. My thoughts go out to everybody affected by this, but most specifically in this thread @I ran away who was suffering very severely, and @Famous Old Painter as well. For my story: I don't have clinical depression so I can't relate as specifically to what you're talking about, but I am on the OCD spectrum and I've experienced it all, from extremely mild starting from a specific event in March of 2015 that is still too triggering to talk about, but steadily and sneakily increasing for the first year and a half, then getting progressively worse and worse at the end of 2016 and into 2017. It was around this point that it was getting too severe that I couldn't hide it anymore. I figured at the beginning that I'd be older and wiser enough to deal with these issues and I'd be fine, but being so naive and not realizing so many people deal with the exact same issues growing up I had little Idea that I was almost literally "dead" wrong. I would be picky to the point where I just had to open up to my parents about it. I swore to not tell ANYBODY else about it, although the other people in the household began to take notice as well. I just didn't want word to spread outside the household and for people to make fun at me about it. I just didn't want to lose anyone, that was my fear (and as you mentioned, you actually lost somebody probably because of this, which is too bad that some people who are "normal" act that way and reject everybody else, it's just that social stigma and our fear of losing people that prevents us from opening up). It got to the point where I was having complete mental breakdowns where there was this voice saying terrible things making me feel bad, and to stop it I'd self-injure, it'd get bad enough for me to do that around every two weeks. Then around April of 2017 it was every week. Eventually it was every few days, then every day in May 2017. June was arguably my low point, as I was having these meltdowns sometimes a few times a day. My parents threatened me with the emergency room, which we went to a few times but didn't actually get out as I managed to calm myself down enough. I had to calm down enough, because we were going on vacation and they were saying they might cancel it because I was that unstable. And I REALLY needed to get out of this ugly place, I felt that vacation would do me a very good job. I managed to keep things under wraps forcefully for a while, but that didn't fix the underlying issue whatsoever. We go on vacation and because I've been bottling this up it began to creep back again. I remember a freakout actually happening sort of out in the open, there weren't many people around, there was 1 though. He didn't really notice, but I was screaming and I threw my phone, lost a part of it and the screen was a little cracked where it hit the ground but it still worked fine, and would probably still work fine to this day if I hadn't sold it to get another phone. Anyhow the big turnaround moment was on a specific day where there was supposed to be a huge fireworks show that was supposed to look really awesome. I seen something that triggered me and as usual I go into full meltdown mode. It was when I was in the truck, I'd seen other things that day that made me uncomfortable but that was the last straw. Was taken to the emergency room against my will, but it was definitely for the better. Ended up staying 5 or 6 hours there, which I know is nothing compared to some visits. But it was enough to make me miss the show, that I had planned for months, I had my playlist all set up and ready to go for it (hopefully you can tell how passionate I am about music now). I could hear my voice looking down and knowing that whatever they'd give me would make him go away, but at the very least "he was able to take away this show from me". I'm just very glad it wasn't a Coldplay concert. Series of doctors came in, pretty much asking me the same thing. Got extremely tiring after a while just saying the same thing over and over again, I don't know why they just don't bring in the biggest wig firstly. I guess he was busy and they were sending in lower level people first, but yeah. You could just tell the top psychiatrist was looking straight through you, could understand so well..... He was gonna give me some Prozac but a short term fix would be the.... I can't remember the name of it but it was a tiny little white dot, and it totally shut off all your emotions. It worked very well in the short term but you'd need to keep taking it so it would stop. It made me feel like a robot without emotion, and it was freaking terrible. But it was FAR better than having to deal with all that other garbage. They were considering keeping me for the night just to keep an eye on me, but I had calmed down enough by that point that they sent me back. At first they wanted to fly me home, and I was like nooooo way. I managed to win the rest of the trip back, but the last few days got stressful again, as I was not yet on Prozac, and even then it takes a few weeks to kick in so I wouldn't have felt the effect anyway. The day was a complete wreck by the way, just like every day was that had a meltdown. Once you expend that much bad energy on something like that, you just feel empty and torn up inside. You might be fine but it just doesn't feel very good whatsoever. Got home and got on the Prozac.... after about four weeks it was doing freaking wonders. I still had those issues but they cooled off significantly, I wasn't freaking out as often anymore, and I could actually live life. I still had the tendencies I had in the past, but they didn't bother me as much and I could deal with it, even if it was in a very weird way, calmly. From then on it's been a steady decline till, I don't know. I think the past almost a year? Things still bother me but I have much more energy efficient ways of dealing with it now. That's pretty much my story, and I don't wanna delve too deep into what exactly bothers me and how I dealt with it as it is still triggering. But for those of you who have OCD, you'll definitely tend to find that what bothers you changes. Something will bother you some days, and not bother you at all other days. Then over months, what used to bother you will fade away, then something else will take its place. It's a never ending vicious cycle, and I don't know exactly what causes it, but it's fucking terrible and still haunts me. Even if these meds I'm still on have help tons, I'm not sure this will be a disease that can ever be cured fully, or that I can be the way I used to ever again. What is certain, is that my life is at the very least bearable again, and some of the time enjoyable.. Now what's eerie is that a long time friend of mine began showing signs of more severe mental illness, getting to the point where he had to take 2 different meds a day. Then another more recent friend of mine opened up and said that it'd been very mild for a very long time but recently got unbearable. Like you, this person has been diagnosed with clinical depression, although she suspects she has some schizophrenia as well. THEN just over this summer my brother, who's been mildly idiosyncratic most of his life just like the rest of the people mentioned including myself, showed extremely similar OCD tendencies to what I currently face now, and that's the scariest part. Like I can barely accept that to be coincidence, for me to not only be dealing with something right now and he's going through the exact same thing? And it's not something general like "life is terrible" or whatever, it's a very specific thing both of us are dealing with which seemed to start up around the same time. Like Geez. The other point I wanted to make with this is that it seems like those of us who have these mental illnesses more often than not have an extremely mild form of it in their childhood. My recent friend has said this, my brother has said this, my long time friend has had a variety of mental illnesses in the past, and I can say the same thing. It's a very common childhood example, but I'd always imagine when laying down that if I didn't bring my legs up past a certain line, a monster would get me. But I seriously worried about this, even though deeply I knew it wouldn't happen. And I did it anyway, because this same voice which was much tamer at this time told me I had to do that. Turns out the monster was him all along..... I've always had issues with certain textures of objects that would remind me of bad things, but it got much worse from a certain incident involving that in early 2015. and that's as much as I'm willing to say about what exactly triggers my OCD, but to be honest it's branched out from there and it's not just limited to texture anymore, in fact that's gone fairly minor now. It just started all of this that formed a concept, upon which other OCD tendencies have formed. In fact typing this out made me realize it was all about this all along, and I've never ever thought about it this deeply before, see this is what happens when you open up and think things through, whether it's to yourself or something else, that can help you get through an illness. Now I've noticed that you're talking about how some themes make you uncomfortable, and how you can't really enjoy these songs because they make your depression worse. I could definitely see how this would play a part, and with me there's certain songs that have certain themes, not really mood wise for me, but things I just "don't like" I guess that I can't listen to because of this. So I can relate to it in that way, but in a mood sense I actually prefer listening to songs that line up with my mood. Yes if I'm sad it'll make me even more sad, but it's that theme fitting that actually helped me cope, this is a part of why I live for music, because it just enhances whatever I'm feeling at the time. I like getting deeper into my emotions and enhancing them, and music helps me do that. Not anger of course, and it doesn't promote anger to the point of doing that, it's more of a harmless anger, but if I am feeling legitimate anger it can be extremely relatable and all the better, for me mood doesn't get "stuck" like that so I can delve as deep into any emotion and I'll be fine and great. I especially found some songs to be very relatable. Among others, the Mouldplay classic "Only Superstition" and "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum. At my worst I found I was really enjoying some Linkin Park, One Step Closer couldn't be more relatable if it tried. It's almost as if he had these same things going on and it at least annoyed Chester in the exact same way it was bugging me. Just the themes are almost the same! I know this all too well too. I personally don't suffer from chronic depression but a friend does and it can be VERY serious. I definitely know it's not just "sadness" too, it's a chemical imbalance in the brain that causes...... well, I can't describe it because I don't have depression, but for those of you who do have depression you know exactly what @I ran away is talking about. And especially because you're a prominent community member who I know very well and have these connections with I'm even more sorry to hear this. :( I know right?!?!!? There's this social stigma around it, really no matter what age you are, although it's more severe in some people's cases, and this causes people to bottle up and thus most of the time it gets worse. My recent friend has done this as mentioned above, and I did it for a long time until she opened up to me about it in September of last year. She was the first person outside my family I told about this, and then it was just kept to the small friend group. I know that because of this she has certain tendencies that have embarrassed her in public before. I've always been extremely cautious in public not to stand out or look like a fool, because I didn't want people thinking I was weird. I've always been an introvert and I've always just wanted to blend in, be invisible ya know. It just gets bottled up, and this relates back to the whole topic of, we need to let people know about this. It sucks when there's been people that are victims of being slaves to modern society and what being "normal" is like, and to reject anything outside that, but it's definitely good to open up to friends and family you trust and can count on. And when the world's ready, we'll hopefully be able to be entirely transparent about everything we're going through. Just too much drama and bad in the world to do that yet..... huh that kind of relates to this EL theme :O Too relatable, if you've read above you'll see I've had a similar experience. That freaking sucks though, holy shit I didn't know it was bad enough for you to be hospitalized :( Mental illness has ups and downs. Even now in a much milder state, I have some good and bad days. Bad nowhere near as what it used to be thankfully, but everybody's different. I hope you get well soon, as always. TOO RELATABLE Remember everybody's different and you might not react to those songs as she did. Better to be safe than sorry though, and if EL triggered you it's best to stay away for now. Too relatable, happens to the best of us, we just can't resist some good ol' Coldplay :joy:

Everyday Life - Live in Jordan on YouTube 22 Nov
Too late for me :joy: I must agree that they could have done the chorus a little better. It's supposed to be youthful and fun, but I feel like the Max Martin influence helping them craft a big pop hit by doing some cringy lyric thing they already did in HFTW didn't get them very far. I do like the song as a whole though, even if it is the most poppy one off the album. ----- Sadly I'm over a week late to enter that contest, but they probably wouldn't have picked me anyway. I'm an okay singer, but I probably would have butchered that chorus :joy: I did find that listening to the video I went off key and sounded way worse than just doing it solo though. Funny how that works. Guess it's Chris harmonizing and what not that throws me off :joy:

Arabesque - Sunrise
Oh darn. I wonder who is then, because there's definitely some ambient atmospheric electric guitar in the background. What part? Didn't remind me of AOAL at all. :O I seen your post about this in the main LP8 thread, I think somebody must have uploaded the instrumental to YouTube. Here's the main version:

LP8 Thread - Everyday Life
Right next to each other. :joy: I understand that Coldplaying wants to cooperate with Coldplay and their wish to not have this album leaked, but forcing people to find it themselves is still a little sketchy if you ask me. What about the people who aren't as proficient with computers, you want them to get redirected to some survey that'll tell them they won an iPhone 11 and then get some virus? It's really Coldplay/the label's fault that the album leaked anyway. It's an inherent risk they must accept if they are to send advance copies out to radio stations, reviewing outlets, lucky fans, etc. Then they're surprised this happens. I managed to find it on my own this time, I'm just concerned for the people who aren't so good with computers. Although I fully understand it's not completely your fault, and you wanna stay on Coldplay and the label's good side. I'd despise to see this site and all its other great content taken down, after all. In a sense I get what you're saying, after the release there's barely any tour dates and the era's effectively over if that's all you account for. But I still don't think even in that case that an era is limited to the wait time, hype, and promo. I think either way the era wouldn't really last any longer, seeing as all eras persist after the release regardless of tour dates, and this definitely will for a lot of people seeing as a lot of the songs are more original, unique and memorable and most people will like this better than AHFOD. I agree for the most part that if you listen to a studio version first, the live version usually ends up a whole lot better in Coldplay's case, but for the second part I found I really liked the live version of EL as it was, and then I also really liked the parts in the studio version that weren't in the live version, my only complaint being that Jonny was a little too quiet in the studio. As always, to each their own though. IDK, most of the reviews on the leaked thread are really good. Of course there's always gonna be a couple duds on every album, but the majority of the reviews, including mine, highly approve. The truth is..... Your guess is as good as mine. :P I thought that was really cool. Not something you see often, but Will can do it because the drum part is incredibly simple (but exists) in that song, and he's a multi-instumentalist (even though I never knew he could play guitar before either, I just knew of piano). And that's nowhere near a spoiler, maybe only for the video but not for the album which is what we want to keep to a minimum. :) Well now you have a spectacular reason to listen to the leak beforehand. It'd be wise to just listen to it now and write the review, you'd have much more time to digest it. I'm sure this isn't the only band you're a fan of. This time, you have a reason not to be a part of the group who tortures themself waiting for the album to come out when they know there's a leak. You wouldn't really be missing out on that much of an experience. :D Probably not, unless they're sending advance copies of that version of the album, probably to people in Japan. I haven't heard of any leaks of this thus far. It'd be nice, but it's unlikely. I'd be willing to wait. Probably. Already released as a single. I'm not sure if it was you, but I think I also read another post asking if EL would be a single. Don't forget Los Unidades. They barely took any time off at all! I didn't expect an EP, let alone 2 EPs. I expected the hiatus to be way longer than this, all that considered. But here we are, not even a year after Los Unidades, with another true Coldplay album.

Orphans (Official Video)
Took me a second to realize you weren't referring to that k pop boy band, I thought they made a remix or something of orphans and I was preparing to get end stage cancer :joy:

What made you LOL today?
I had the opposite thing happen to me when I was 16. My uncle's friend thought I was a postdoc, kool aid dip dyed hair and all... I myself am usually mistaken for an adult even though I'm only 17. :joy:

Extremely long post, so I just put it all in a spoiler.

Arabesque - Sunrise
Geez, listening to the instrumental and closely to the song all the really good production tidbits come through...... the singular notes and how they work together of the groovy baseline, the various ambient electric guitar embellishments from Jonny, the way it's produced....... I've never heard someone shred on a sax before like at around 3:07, then how it just gets subsequently drowned in reverb to signify an increase in intensity....... then they play the same clip also in the background in reverb later in the same solo. also, is that Jonny shredding around 4:45?!!?!?! if so that'd be the day...... never heard this from him before......

Daddy - Sunrise
Both are dark, but one's obviously worse than the other. Or, since we know this isn't an interlude (or will be very long), and clocks in at 4:58, perhaps it could tell a story, going from "I miss you daddy" to finding out. Heck, maybe even throw in the fun times at the beginning.

BrokEn - Sunrise
Darn I surely hope not, upon looking at that phrase I just got a whole bunch of lyrical Ideas I wanna use

LP8 Thread - Everyday Life
Regarding the name similarities between Aiko and Eko @TomRiver, @yoyo2000 has a really good explanation. I was gonna chime in and say that Aiko was actually a reprise, but yoyo is right in saying that there was legtimately an unreleased song named Aiko, that probably sounds nothing like the Aiko most of the fanbase is used to. The track lengths are probably mere coincidence if this were to be the case, as TomRiver was obviously referring to the popular version of Aiko. There is a small chance that Eko is a remade version of the original Aiko, and an even slimmer chance that the length was kept, which would also mean the original Aiko is around as long as the Aiko we know, coincidentally or not. Another possibility is that Eko is a remade version of the Aiko we know, which I highly doubt as it's an officially released reprise. Inspired maybe, perhaps to poke some fun at the fanbase. If this turns out I'll be very surprised and we may never know what their motives were. Hell, maybe the unreleased Aiko shares some musical similarities to the reprise which would make the above more likely. It's unlikely but maybe Aiko was made to be a reprise and the Aiko we know and the "first" Aiko are the same, or that Aiko came first and it evolved, and Aiko was released later as a "reprise". I think they were Jon Hopkins reprises though, so the similarities would probably go no further than him being inspired by the original Aiko at best if it did have that melodic motif, and in all likelihood some doofus probably uploaded the JH reprise of Aiko to YT and slapped "Aiko" on it as it related to that era. ---------------------------------------------------- It could have also meant for an EP don't forget..... It would still mean that they likely have something more for us. I would agree that GS isn't necessarily experimental, but there are numerous production elements that set it apart from the mainstream electronic pop songs at the time. There just seems to be a lot more space and ambiance in the record, as well as a greater variety and flavor of sounds. It's more "smoothly" produced than many of the songs at the time as well. Well, if EL is better than GS...... here's hoping that LP9 will show AHFOD who's boss :D YASSSSSSSSS Their best album IMO, we totally need something like that. Not something exactly like it, but just something that isn't so watered down as AHFOD. Mylo has real energy and bombast to its colorful music, and I think that's the way to go if they are to make big stadium songs like that, which is very possible for LP9 seeing that they're not supporting this album with a big tour, so they must be supporting the next one with a larger tour which would require something tending a little more towards the mainstream side. This also brought another thought to mind: people are usually talking about GS as the smaller and more experimental side of the same coin that the poppy AHFOD is on. The same trend occurs with VLV and Mylo. Even though VLV was still a huge album with a big hit, the same sort of pattern applies. Despite Mylo's production with the synths especially spicing it up thanks to "Enoxification", which also probably played a part into making it my favorite album of all time with the combination of the energy and color of the music and just enough unique production to keep me happy as well, it's undoubtedly more mainstream and poppy than VLV, so yeah, this trend has been going for over a decade :D didn't they already do that with AROBTTH? As great as the album is, it'd be no fun seeing them do something they've already done. PREACH. It is kind of annoying seeing somewhat of a mentality being spread here that any song that gets popular is automatically bad, and that how bad a song is is directly proportionate to how popular it is (then why would we even be listening to Coldplay besides their oldest tunes?) I'll definitely say however that different styles of music have been popular at different times of history. Stuff like The Beatles is something pretty much everyone can get down to, and because it's actually good music it will also be acclaimed. That kind of music has had its time though, and again it's no fun just repeating the past, so other styles evolved and became popular, some of which were more subject to critical and serious music fan acclaim than others. What I am gonna say is that it just feels like mainstream styles have gotten dumber and dumber over the years, lending to mainstream populations still enjoying it, but more serious music fans and critics becoming more sick of it. It's not easy to make something so unique and original yet simultaneously popular at the same time, much less repeat that with a different style. It's happened before, but for a whole artist to enjoy this kind of success isn't common. We can speculate on why this is, that this is a deliberate attempt by labels so they can make easy songs written in an hour and score big money, or enabling literally anybody regardless of talent to do just this by making recording and production technologies more accessible, etc. but as another user said it all just comes down to taste. Whether we want to hear it or not, no one's taste is objectively any better than any other, even if Person A's taste includes more "difficult" music than Person B. If it so happens that the style of music that's popular currently isn't somebody's cup of tea, that's completely fine as long as they're not hipsters acting like they don't like the music "just cause it's mainstream and cool", rather they should recognize whether they legitimately don't like that style of music, and I respect people who do that. This can be more difficult to do nowadays, as the mainstream music scene has been experiencing convergence lately. In the past more styles of music were popular, so it was more difficult to say "I just don't like mainstream music". Contrast this to nowadays, where much of the music kind of just sounds the same, so to label it as a style that doesn't fit your taste is much easier, so to just automatically assume all mainstream music is garbage is a piece of cake. But people who are able to think it through like this will see past that, and I think it's quite important we all do this as it might help us expand our tastes, or at least find out why some content just isn't for us. Being in a community where the majority of people like a certain thing and don't like other things however doesn't help, and I can only wonder what some of our opinions would be without that bias. Exact same here. I think l really do like most of the songs from AHFOD, but it perhaps doesn't seem that way due to the community bias mentioned above. I definitely still prefer music with more energy if it has to be poppy, and I do thing Stargate played a role in watering down some of their ideas I don't think what Chris said there implies that at all, really. They've been saying that for a while now, and this era he's really made sure we've all heard that they really don't care about mainstream success anymore (even if they said that last album, it's practically been confirmed that most tracks on this album will be different some way or another, with the notable collaborators and snippets of other songs we've heard). You're probably still right though, seeing as Orphans served as the highlights from AHFOD and EL landed somewhere in between "experimental" and more accessible. Not to mention Stargate's on at least a track and Timbaland apparently has a credit on EL. I mean there's nothing really poppy in Arabezque so of course the mix would lend to something different being at the forefront. I don't think the guitar production is all that different though. It's a little quirkier in Arabesque and it's a little more audible in that track but I still think it's somewhat buried beneath Chris' vocals, this becomes more apparent after listening to the instrumental. Orphans has gotten some level of attention and I heard it once on radio like a day after release but if that's the case I'm not sure there'll be any "big" hit from this album at all, because it isn't that popular. There's nothing wrong with that of course. Perhaps another single will catch them by surprise and end up being this era's big hit. Not the most trustworthy source of course, but THEY DID end up throwing Jay Z onto Prospekt's March..... That makes the most sense, considering it has a sort of long attack and dies down right after that. Which I think is kinda similar to how he does things with any sort of percussion anyhow.

The news on this album just keeps on coming! Too fast at that, as I was planning to get on here earlier so I wouldn't have a million people to reply to, but alas that was in vain, because there's been several pages of posts since my last. AND I feel inclined to share my thoughts on "Guns" and the track lengths. Guns: This preview has me hyped (like surprisingly some of the Oldplayers on here:). Not that I wasn't super hyped upon hearing the first few seconds of Arabesque, but this sets it in stone that we aren't gonna get a sappy poppy relatively overproduced happy-go-lucky outing from the boys unlike last time around. As it that wasn't obvious with the reveal of the album's collaborators, but to hear even more previews only keeps bringing the hype level up. The blend of the fast paced dark style and the acoustic feel of the track really has me wondering what will be next..... the EL era has proven itself to be unpredictable thus far, so there's really no telling what's coming next, and that's the really fun part. I also think their choice of the snippet is really good, while it's highly likely it's the intro of course it might be edited to include the "STOP" at the end, which might actually be the end of the song (or be both a "stop" in the middle of the song and at the end) considering two songs so far have abrupt endings. I'm really digging the vibe of the snippet itself as well: it's dark, it's fast paced, and it's acoustic, which don't come together all that often, and I applaud Coldplay for continuing to throw original curveballs our way in this era. Poitically Speaking: Now I notice some people are complaining about the somewhat overt political tones in some of these songs. I can understand that some people just don't like politics (which is a very respectable position) and use music as an escape from the turmoil of the current state of our world. I completely get where they're coming from, and to each their own. However, a few have noted on here that Coldplay (and musical artists in general, *ahem*Rage Against The Machine*ahem*) produce their best material when they turn politically conscious (Politik, Violet Hill (and pretty much all of VLV), Arabesque, A L I E N S, etc.): Personally, I'm all ears. Coldplay and Chris Martin have been increasingly involved in global issues throughout their career, and they've kicked it into overdrive over the last few with Global Citizen and such. I think they've always been politically conscious, but by actually getting involved and touring the world, the bad and ugly of it is really starting to hit them firsthand , And this definitely isn't a bad thing, both for them as people and the quality of their music. If you're just carefree and happy, that's fine and all, but remember Yin and Yang. Heck, a story with no obstacles or challenges to overcome that doesn't go anywhere is extremely boring, and that's somewhat why many people disliked AHFOD: there wasn't nearly enough darkness in the album. So it kind of surprises me to see people disliking the political aspects of the album (and just having a conversation about it now when we've known for a while that this album has teeth and is about political and world issues), when that's probably what's inspiring Coldplay to create the darker music those same people seem to long for. As @Miha said, their involvement with Global Citizen has likely played a major role in this album, and that's not necessarily a bad thing all around. Tracklist Lengths: This wasn't what I was expecting at all. I thought several of the songs were going to be around a minute long and that several of the tracks were actually meant to directly lead into other tracks (which is completely pointless to split them up like that), but given the length of the only two songs on the album less than two minutes I can't foresee this. Several of the songs are under 3 minutes, which both excites me in a way that I wonder what they're going to do experimenting with a shorter format, but then again I like long evolving progressive songs as well, and that's definitely something that won't be a part of this album mostly, unless they've "portioned" them down, which I can't see. If they're becoming more mature in that department, I can't see what should be a single song being split down into separate tracks.) A few tracks of the album are longer songs, so it is nice to see we'll have a mix at least. I guess a hit in length had to be taken somewhere, but this might not be a bad thing. I wish I had this willpower like you Am envious. :joy: Yes, you might very well be overhyped, don't set the bar too high lol. Btw, wasn't that VLVODAAHF? :joy: Wow, that's something I didn't expect to hear. To each their own though! IDK about that..... remember Ghost Story and Moving to Mars? Very possible! Hopefully they didn't upload the full Guns by accident, and we're not missing out- oh wait I'm supposed to keep myself away from any and all previews until the album releases, which I know won't happen as I'll likely be finding the snippets of the other songs that have been teased, and if the album leaks I'm jumping on that :joy: I'm glad they've grown into the fact that not everybody will like them (as if that wasn't obvious already), and they're taking advantage of that with being more vocal in their music. Many places in the world still have vehemently disrespectful views whether they like to admit it or not, including some of the places that Coldplay have toured to. I would say that it would be "interesting" to see how they react, but seeing as Coldplay's not doing a massive world tour this time around it'll probably be fine. I just wonder when they do a massive tour again, if they play any of these songs how some might react. But I guess this isn't the first time they've played these kinds of politically charged songs in places with questionable morals, so it's most likely fine. *Non-sarcastically. I think both ways are fairly in your face lol Depends on your definition of an "interlude". I know @Jdckcom says any track under a minute, and it seems like you have a different opinion, but there's really no way to tell without hearing the track for itself to see if it qualifies as an interlude proper or not. I think a more accurate way of saying it would be a rather short song, which I consider to be under 2 minutes. IIRC there's only 2 of those on the album so I think we're fine. I consider an interlude to be more of a "bridge" between songs or sections of songs, so there can be very short standalone songs, and also very long interludes. Then there's the intros and outros that might be separated. That's what i was saying in my previous post, I was hoping that either some would be combined into a single track or like Arabesque and EL be used in a real song somehow (although I guess I figured that was unlikely because of how many songs there were and the length of the album, but I guess already 2 have memos as intros, so it wouldn't be impossible that there's more, just that being 16 tracks there's likely to be a couple that were short, and now we see that) Gratz. As for me..... Correctly predicted by me! Not sure what I'd prefer TBH. Usually I like longer songs, but there are some damn fine short songs, and I'm excited to see where Coldplay takes having a majority of the songs as being shorter (but the "interludes" being longer). Remember that Chris said the band doesn't really care about commercial success anymore, and I think they've done a great job this era so far of being unique in their marketing. It's possible that you're right and he was half just saying that to hint towards the album's sound (and obviously they wouldn't be rolling into experimental territory if they were fully focused on success), or worse that they're being made to do this by their label (which I can't really see, as they've had lots of success and they're an aging band, which would lend towards the label letting them get creative). Not likely. We've already heard 3 full songs, and snippets of other songs which might have been unofficial teases. That being said they might do something like the AHFOD era where they release a snippet from every song, even songs that have already been heard. Not sure about the time intervals but you might be right. If it is a song per 16 days like you suggested it would have to be out of order, or starting with Sunset because obviously Guns isn't the opener, and it seems like the snippets are longer than AHFOD's 10 second snippets or so. You might be right that they'll eventually tease all the snippets of the song, but I wouldn't say it would be over the next 16 days. I think it's more likely that another single is on the way. Just a heads up, the same interview was posted a page before the page you posted it on. That being said, I completely agree with you. This is a surprisingly good interview, considering it's 2019 and interviews and news outlets are just getting progressively more shallow. Where did you get this information from? I haven't heard any information about leaks or people gaining access to the album thus far.

2019-11-02 Coldplay Live on Saturday Night Live (SNL)
I'm not sure, I couldn't really notice a massive difference between the AHFOD tour voice (at least from what I remember) and this voice. He's definitely starting to show some age visually and sonically. Not that it matters, still be my favorite performer no matter what! I see a lot of conflicting views here on the forums saying "it really goes nowhere" and "it's boring" (@Zero Theory, no, even some of us Coldplayers have some level of intolerance for boringness). That being said, this is my favorite of the era so far. It has great Viva-esque production value with the strings (that are used in a semi-unconventional manner), and as always the vocal melodies and the emotional piano chords compliment each other effortlessly, in classic Coldplay fashion. For what's there, it's great. I wish the guitar was a little more prevalent in the studio version as it was comparitively buried under the rest of the mix in the studio (no surprise, it's almost always like that these days with Coldplay, live version Jonny shines, studio version everything else, although the live version was missing the strings and all the other production tidbits that make the studio version stand out a little) It's also a little short, and as the same person mentioned I think they missed an opportunity for a grand solo and a massive "Hallelujah" chorus, but then again it's a refreshing and creative artistic choice to show deliberate restraint, to do something that you haven't done before. Where Coldplay usually goes for the massive choruses, they held back from that this time, and that's something I notice critics pick upon, that Coldplay can be a little too bombastic sometimes (which I personally disagree with, but hey, to each their own). In a way I think it makes the world of music more interesting, because with a song that feels like it should have a larger chorus at the end, it doesn't, and thus that makes music less predictable and more fun because now you know you're not just gonna get a massive chorus everytime, as good as that feels. It's something deeper that I think they've explored here, and even though there might have been missed opportunity, it might have been a creative decision on their part for the reasons listed above to not go into a massive chorus. Then I know people are complaining about the song not really having enough momentum, and I can see where they're coming from in that the song kind of revolves around the same thing, not varying in energy much, but personally it is enough to satisfy me, there is enough emotion in the choruses and it moves and evolves well enough to please me at least. To have that "slow song" kind of vibe which kind of floats there but still manages to be emotional, I think they nailed it this time. They tried with Everglow as another user mentioned in here, and unlike that user I personally also like Everglow but I think it turned out much better this time. bUt wAiT, tHaT'D (probably) mEaN uSiNg bAcKiNg tRaCkS, aNd tHaT'S nO fUn aMiRiTe?!!?!?!1111!11 Darn this takes me back to the good ol days (geez I know I'll sound so self indulgent to the real long time fans that have been doing this kind of thing with Coldplay for decades) in the AHFOD speculation era, which lasted a lot longer. During their first high profile live performance in some time, we noticed some colorful (in a literal sense not in a swear word sense) lyrics on some of Chris' pants. We made some out, did some photo manipulation etc. and at the end it turned out that some lyrics were included in the album (and some didn't make it, because it is likely that the album was still being made at that time). Also during another subsequent performance where a new song was played, we noticed some letters that made a phrase from the album, and the Flower of Life. So those words on the strap may very wel translate into the album! Maybe it's "Heart Conscious Pilot". I can't really see the "ness" at the end so maybe it is sort of something like that! I think it's a combination of them not being on stage (or on TV, even though I know some deep phobias can last a long time I don't know how they could be playing that long and still have minor stage fright, I guess after not being on stage for that long it's understandable :P) and also the fact that he was bouncing and running around as usual during the actual performance (don't know how much longer he'll be able to do that for) can make him crack and go off key more, like on most live shows.

LP8 Thread - Everyday Life
Time for another mandatory massive post..... Eh, to each their own, I think many songs since Viva have reached and exceeded that level of ingenuity. EL IMO is great and my fav so far from the era but I wouldn't consider it a Fix You. Now now, not to get too hyped. Remember Stargate's on at least one of the tracks. That being said all the other collabs are pointing to this being a really good album, then again there's nothing wrong with setting the bar low so you either aren't surprised it was bad or become pleasantly surprised. YES! I'd really like to hear Coldplay experiment with different genres. It's highly unlikely considering they're seeming to be heading in a more old style jazzy fashion but a fusion of genres would be really cool to see. I was thinking of doing it but I caved when SNL came on, I didn't just wanna turn it off after Orphans cause somebody was watching it with me and I didn't feel like disappointing them. Heck I wanted to try holding out entirely on this era and waiting till the album release proper to hear all the songs, but another of my favorite bands just released an album and I haven't heard a single song off it yet, so I guess I can already say I did that. Not the same experience as holding off throughout the hype though, I surely haven't had that experience yet! In hindsight I should have just held our, seeing as album closers are usually top notch, specially with Coldplay, and designed to be listened at the end of something ya know? Wouldn't be fair to just listen to it on their own for the first time, so I get where you're coming from, and I wish I woulda held out I mean they're both slow and melancholic but EL is hopeful while AROBTTH definitely isn't, so other than the slow pace and general emotive vibe of the songs there's little in common with them. As another user on here said it's more similar to Amsterdam IMO (even with the emotive differences). WTF?!!? It's so subtle I couldn't hear it! I'll try to remind myself to listen to it after even though I'll probably forget lol. I know it's 2019 and Coldplay is a pop band that has long used auto tune even in small amounts but come on. They can do better than that if they're collabing with real talented musicians, then again CM's voice isn't the best nowadays so it's not really surprising, but still if they're looking for authenticity why wouldn't they just record the take till he did it right instead of fixing it with studio magic? Then again Stargate's producing at least a single track (it seems like for now at least he's not producing the full album, I really hope that's not an unrevealed unwelcome secret of this whole process anyways. I'd highly doubt it considering all the other real musicians they've brought in, then again anything's possible since JC is on the same track, maybe Stargate's looking to get a little jazzy and become real artists themselves......? either way I would not want them producing the full album, hopefully that's not a hidden news that would disappoint us.) Oh geez, as others have mentioned it's way too early to call, and I can see people overestimating and being disappointed like the past few albums. That being said I definitely wouldn't say it's better than M or AROBTTH. Never know though. That's something the live version has on the album, I was really excited to hear Jonny's guitar shining live, and I can't believe I didn't realize it's usually less audible on the studio version than live, so I was half disappointed with that part specifically upon listening to the studio. IDK man, with most of the lineup the rest of the tracks have I think this is gonna be fantastic (again, nothing wrong with being pessimistic to either be proven right or pleasantly surprised). But for the most part I think there's no reason to worry. Have you heard the shorter teases/snippets of some of the other songs yet? That would really make sense considering it's released on Nov 22 and they say it's been "100 years in the making" (since 1919). Any link to the video? I was gonna say that some people on hear must have had a crystal ball because some were speculating that was gonna happen, but then this guy clarified: Highly likely you're right, but you still never know, they might be the next singles! Bleh. Probably made it more poppy than necessary, although Orphans is still a good track, and Max Martin can produce some decent music. Just kind of sad to hear Coldplay's still been working with mainstream producers, when this was supposed to be more of an experimental record, which I'm still confident it will be..... again let's just hope it's not information we don't know about ye that more mainstream producers will be doing the rest of the songs either. But with songs like Arabesque and even the title track, I retain confidence that even with minimal pop influence it will be rather authentic (and tbh seeing what most of Max Martin's sound is like now I'm surprised Orphans didn't turn out too too poppy, it sounds like a legit indie pop/rock track. Then again maybe we now know where the "get drunk with my friends" lyrics came from. :triumph: I wish there was, because it would have been great to just hear it unspoiled in the context of the album, but noooo. People would probably break it too much though and moderation I'd imagine is fairly difficult for stuff like that, then people would accuse them of being picky etc..... so I just think it wouldn't be a good idea all around, and I think discussing the overall vibe of the song doesn't do too much harm as an outside person who hasn't listened to it yet, as language only conveys a vague idea of what something subjectively sounds like, and the outside listener might have a completely different opinion (although, looking at other's opinions beforehand can skew first impressions so I personally try to avoid influential opinion as much as possible). That's something I noticed with that video, his voice definitely didn't sound up to par, and I think he has kind of a quirky voice as it is, a tone that many people don't like. It half annoys me too cause it kinda sounds nasaly but it's not too too bad. Not true Coldplay, but don't forget Pharrell Williams on E Lo. Darn I noticed your count very close to this the other day and was planning to congratulate you! WOO! Not the biggest of singles, fairly unlikely. Remember, this isn't the first time we've been unpleasantly surprised by what seemed to be a large track count. I know they did sort of the opposite thing on VLV but, hey. Still, 16 tracks and a double album feels like it kind of deserves more, like 2 actual discs because under an hour of music can easily fit onto a single disc. so it wouldn't be a true "double album", just more in the sense of theme. That's probably a good guess but I am hoping for a little more TBH. That would mean taking a hit at the other song's lengths though, and I'm hoping for at least 1 or 2 longer songs like Arabesque, but we just don't know. Kind of sad to see that this album isn't as long as it first seemed, but it's still a lot of material compared to most albums released recently. IMO I value every recording, long and complex or short and underdeveloped, so it'll still be interesting hearing CP take a slightly different approach to their recordings this time around. ----------------------------- Something to note, even though I know this isn't fhe first time he's mentioned it this era: 3:00 of the interview a few posts above: "it's not about money, it's not about awards, it's not about fame, it's not about critical success, it's not about rankings...." I am so very glad to hear this coming from them. Really comfirms that they've got something great cooked up for us in store, even if they've got a few pop influences in there. I'm sure whatever they give us it will be great, judging by what we've heard so far and the authentic nature of most of the collaborations of this era. Something else he mentioned around the 5:00 mark is that he recorded memos in Buenos Aires, Jerusalem (ring a bell?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!..... sorry that was terrible) Italy, Paris (kind of stopped there lol). So that would mean at least 4 memos. I'm really hoping some of them are combined into one track, but assuming they're on their own separate tracks that means we have "only" 9 real songs left to hear (10 counting Flags). So, worst case scenario, even that is still better than something like GS for example where apparently people only hadn't listened to 2 tracks before the album officially released (wasn't an actual fan at the time) but still like that is kind of low total left, seeing as there might be another single or 2 released before the album. Also never knew Will Champion was all the reason behind the no swearing in Coldplay lyrics before (whether that's just an excuse or not :joy: :joy: ) but if so I'm glad he kind of grew up around that!

2019-11-02 Coldplay Live on Saturday Night Live (SNL)
Idk, as I said in the other thread it is an artistic decision to not have that third massive chorus singing hallelujah, which is what we were expecting, and this era has thrown nothing but curveballs our way so far..... this might be a decision that ends up growing on me to be honest. That purposeful restraint might be a long term grower as opposed to the predictable massive ending that they usually do, and have done many times before. If we wanted them to try different things, this is a part of it and this is what we get. Not necessarily that experimental music has to sound good, the whole point is that it's different and original and some will sound good, others not so much, but the point is is that we can appreciate them for putting real effort in to make something original. Even though Everyday Life isn't experimental per se it does have unique artistic choices which could be labeled as such, including this shorter ending which is again something different to try out, and now we'll see how it goes and see whether it stays with us or not. It's definitely a twist I wasn't expecting, so I appreciate that. For a few years now his voice has been "old" and it's understandable it will only continue to decline. Heck it's well known now that it's likely he lip syncs Clocks live. I mean other artists manage to keep their voices for a lot longer, although around this age it starts to deteriorate anyway. It's not like Chris is renowned for his unimaginable singing capability anyway, it's the fact he's the frontman of Coldplay, the songwriting, his personality, how he is as a performer, and even his philanthropy that gets him praise. I guess then again people who've managed to retain their voices into older years don't go singing night after night for two years on several occasions while bouncing all over the stage, so it's more understandable that his voice continues to decline. Heck it's a wonder he does what he can do, night after night of singing even half accurately while keeping the energy to move all around like that, how does it do it?!!!? Obviously a very fit man. You'd have to be to pull that off so often!

What are you thinking right now?
Thinking about the song Orphans :joy:

When was the last time you...? game
Actually I go swimming a lot these days, I used to go almost every day a couple years back, I even had a full year's pass! That ran out and I only went once every few months. Now I go once every week or around there. I think the last time I went actually was a little further back though, maybe two weeks or so ago. When was the last time you ate ice cream?

Orphans (Official Video)
@Coeurli wow, that's a really in depth look at the video! Appreciate it! I did especially like how the first half especially was kind of a shortened "behind the scenes" look at how the song was made essentially, which is something I haven't really seen in a music video before. No, it's not a "proper" "how it's made" inside look, but it manages to get much of the information across in such a small period of time, and manages to find its way into the first half of the video in a casual viewer-friendly format, which I think is a really cool idea. They even showed some of the emails which provide insight into just how much thought they put into this very well made music video! Except me. I only managed to become aware of the 2 singles after they were released and subsequently became amazed by them. Partially because I didn't expect to hear anything from them until late 2020 at the earliest, considering how busy they've been. And that I'd taken lots of time off from the forum, it was the perfect recipe to catch me by surprise in the best manner possible (I didn't even know through the forum, popped up in my YT feed :joy: which I find weird because for artists I follow my phone will send me notifs if they have any new material, so I'm surprised I never really got anything from that) I was thinking after I watched the premiere, that it is mind blowing to think of all these unassuming people walking by in the streets, unaware that they were being exposed to new Coldplay material that would make it onto a future album. Most of these poor people wouldn't have recognized this opportunity to say "hey guys look at me I got an inside look at new Coldplay material". They might realize it after the fact when they hear this on the radio (and lucky for them that this turned out to be the biggest hit thus far, so this is fairly likely) so they might be weirded out when they realize they'd definitely heard the tune before, then realize some guy played it when they were walking down the streets of NYC at 3am, and if they did some digging they'd find out it was a new song and someone somehow managed to know it before release (or they'd figure out that they unknowingly got a sneak preview of a new song right from the boys themselves! or they'd assume they went for the walk after the release, although 3 weeks is a pretty big time and depending on their life situation they may or may not be able to distinguish that). Then for those of those who truly realized what happened they would have considered that a cursed missed opportunity to leak the song or brag about being the first ones to hear it outside of the band and the producers themselves :joy: Still I find it baffling that nobody noticed freaking Chris Martin in NYC. Yes it was a quiet 3am night but still, you think somebody would have recognized him. Maybe a reasonable person did and kept quiet about it, as unlikely as that is :joy: I guess sometimes leaks happen, sometimes not :/ What I find to be "something else" is that somebody went through all the trouble of digging deep into the lyrics to really find out what they were about. Really some amazing symbolism in their lyrics, if you look for them, otherwise they just fade into the background, so they can cater to both the casual listener and the analyst. I wonder if Chris would come along and confirm this all. That would be really cool and I haven't seen such an in depth look at Coldplay lyrics in a long time. Considering the contrast of the poppy wrapper the song is in and the dark and devastating story the lyrics tell this is a very good place to start, I'd think. Wonder what the rest of the album will be like lyrically! Tweet unavailable..... what did he say?

Arabesque - Sunrise
@Gideon_Mx Thanks for recommending me Evil Flower, I'll be sure to check it out and compare it with Arabesque. Turns out you really weren't thinking of The Right Stuff after all, I might check that out though too. Glad that he's not really caring what people think of him anymore either and that he's getting himself outside the comfort zone and doing his own thing despite the haters. Maybe it just looks like hardcore elitist Oasis fans are angry, but I'm sure the real people who care about real music are more than happy! I don't know how likely it is that they'll have other musicians onstage for this (what sounds to be short) tour. They've historically used backing tracks, but as this is a more experimental era we seem to be heading into it wouldn't surprise me to see if they did bring in other real musicians to play those parts. And I'd be very welcoming to that as well. Even if it's not as "authentic" as the band doing everything themself, I'd much rather that than have them play a backing track (or keep doing the same thing over and over again and only make music that all of them can play comfortably, or attempt to play other instruments and would have to keep other instruments out because of it..... sure it would be more "authentic" and "original" and it would be interesting to see what they'd come up with in that case, but I definitely think it wouldn't sound as good as if they did it either of these ways, where I think hiring actual musicians is more "authentic" and "real" then using a back track) Be careful, the same thing happened with GS and we all know how that turned out..... They will definitely perform it live, probably more than once, but at least once during the Jordan live show. Doing it for the Grammys would be a really fun idea, but I have no idea if they'd do that because of the incredibly mainstream audience it would be broadcast to, that would be an incredibly bold move. If they do it though all the more power to them, and I'll definitely be watching the Grammys the night it happens just to see. I definitely agree with you where you said just the themes line up and are all right for them to play there etc. As another person said it actually wasn't him who played it, which is a real shame. It's debatable who wrote the parts but the point is, is that it sounds amazing, and it's a part of what makes the song so great. They aren't totally going full on retro 1920s band style (even if they are, there's some modern production elements which are advancing this style of music into new and interesting territory that wouldn't have existed otherwise due to the fact that the gradual transition over the long period of time would not have allowed for this otherwise, as some production techniques used in this song came almost a century after this style of music became popular and died down. To bridge this gap is very interesting and reminds me somewhat of what Radiohead did with their latest outing). Meh, if that was the case they probably would have gotten him to overdub after. I'm not sure if it was an artistic choice or what (and if so I applaud them for trying something else out), but I'm sure Jonny wrote some parts of the song (whether it be what the sax is now or if that came later I don't know, because I don't know if the original jam session had any sax parts in it, probably just the normal band) but whether he wrote that part specifically is up for debate. Regardless of who wrote it, it sounded very unique and special and brought a nice modern yet unique touch to the old band style. It definitely sounds a lot like Jonny's work so I don't know how or why Drew did this part specifically. I don't even know who he is really but he emulated Jonny's style very well (even if you can't really hear it, as the main focus is the sax).

still an album out next year also.... confused?
ftfy I certainly hope so. And I also hope that they manage to incorporate more unique and original elements even then, so we aren't SO disappointed with the inevitable more accessible album that will lead to a world stadium tour in the future. Well based on what we've heard so far I think it'll be an "experimental" disc and a "less experimental" disc, not necessarily a complete pop makeover. Both Orphans and Everyday Life have unique production qualities that make them stand out from boring pop, more so with EL, So kind of a blend that attempts to please both sides, and then we have no idea what's in store for this next album. I hope it's accessible and big enough for a world stadium tour, but unique, original and interesting enough to keep me and others hooked.
