I've heard a couple of songs of theirs that I've liked. They're kinda weird, though. Not that that was ever a bad thing, mind you... As for the "new wave of new rave" or whatever the silly title is... I have the distinct impression that it is entirely a lazy fabrication by certain elements of the British press, in the hope that it would become a self-fufilling prophesy. Will it work? Time will tell. Basically you can find someone messing around with any particular genre at any given time if you look hard enough.

Why do watchful eyes suddenly make me feel very UNsecure? And for that matter, wasn't big brother (from the book not the show) supposed to be a DISTURBING thing?

Can't say I get her. Totally respect people who like her though. Wouldn't call her screechy at all. Out there, yeah... but that's a good thing.

Howl's Moving Castle - an awed 10/10. I'm not an anime fan (although most of my friends are) and I had never seen anything of Miyazaki's before. Totally was not prepared for how great it was. Just wow.

Never got into 24 in time, but I have heard plenty about the terrorism fearmongering. What's really frying my brain this season is that one of my favorite stand-up comedians, Shaun Majumder, has been cast as one of the terrorists. Shaun is from Newfoundland. His dad is east Indian, but his mom is from Newfoundland, and he has what you might call a steriotypical Newfie sense of humor. When he started doing jokes about his background on 'This Hour Has 22 Minutes' (A fake news show that predates Jon Stewart) it kind of weirded me out because I had always thought of him as a Newfie. I'm nearly 25 and still at home :uhoh: It's nice to live in a city with a crapload of local universities. Saves money if you get along with your parents ok. That said, I did go away to school for a year when I was 19. I didn't like it though, and didn't go back.

I drove with some friends from Halifax to Hartford, Conneticut for a concert. It's a 12 hour or more drive to Boston, and about 3 or 4 hours beyond that to Hartford, if I remember right. We didn't do it all in one day though. Thankfully one of us was from New Hampshire originally, and his amazing mom let us crash at her house and make a proper vacation of the whole trip. The most I've ever spent on tickets would be about $200 for a pit ticket to the Juno awards, specifically so I could see Coldplay perform one single little song.

Yeah, that too... heh now I'm actually digging some of her stuff out for the first time in I don't know how long. Always fun to hear something after a long break. *sings* "Dear Isobel I hope you're well..."

I could never whistle at all until I got braces in 6th grade. Before that I had a big gap between my two front teeth, and it drove me crazy that I couldn't whistle.

Dido! :) Didn't know that there was a thread. Glad to know that there's a new cd on the way- it's been long enough. Agreed- I think some people get the impression it's manufactured because her brother Rollo is so involved in it, and he's a producer. But they actually do their own songwriting. It's just the stupid label that promotes the stuff to death, stripping it of any indie credibility. What I love about her songs is the way she can tell entire stories in just a couple of lines. Try it sometime- it's hard to do well. So many of the 'cool' people are so obsessed with sounding artistic that they've forgotten how powerful a tool some good clear oldfashioned storytelling can be.

I find it's one of those songs that's both vague and direct enough to have multiple valid interpretations. The way I always interpreted it was that someone got themselves into some trouble and someone else could have walked away but came back to save them instead. Looking really closely at the lyrics, and going with the assumption that like most of the songs written during that particular point in time it was about breaking up with his girlfriend, I end up with something quite different, though. I think I may have something on that actually... I'll check.

:cool: I think I was about 19 when I first heard Trouble- 21 when I bought the whole album, on exactly the same day my best friend coincidentally did. I keep it in my cd/alarm clock full-time. It's the only thing I've ever found that I'm not tempted to throw out the window when it comes on in the morning. Just the acoustic guitar on Don't Panic gently fading in, waking me up slowly- it even makes bad mornings a little good.
