  2. Archie Roach was one of the thousands of Aboriginal children taken away from their parents to be fostered by white families. He survived the trauma to become one of Australia’s most distinctive singer-songwriters. His new CD, Looking for Butter Boy, is deeply moving in both personal and political terms. It is arguably the most compelling record of the year. It is simple, painfully honest and recalls his experiences as an Aboriginal person in an often-hostile society. His songs and haunting voice illuminate the pain and misery suffered not only by his people but also his own personal experiences. Snatched from his family at the age of four, Archie was deposited with several orphanages and foster parents. They told him that he would never see his brothers and sisters or his parents again. They just said it was for his own good, so they could teach him how to read and write and pray. Later the authorities told him that his real family had been killed in a fire. When he was about 14 years old, Archie discovered the authorities had lied to him. Anger, hate and rage ripped through his soul. With a guitar strapped across his back, Archie spent the next 14 years living hard on the streets, searching for his family and his identity. It is from these grim origins that Archie draws his inspiration for his powerful music — straight from the heart. Since the day he wrote the song "Took the Children Away", his life has never been the same. It’s the story of the day when he was stolen from his parents. The song brought the plight of the Stolen Generation to public consciousness — becoming almost an anthem — and started his healing process. "When something like that happens, you’re trying to write while you’re hurt and angry. When you hurt like this, it’s the worst feeling in the world," he says. Looking for Butter Boy is a record that provides such a powerful message. The music and lyrics tell the stories about matters that are difficult and painful and serve to remind us of the human anguish, physical suffering and courage that Archie and his people have had to endure. The title of his new record has a funny story behind it. "I was about three...I was on the mission where my mother’s from, and I got into the pantry and covered myself from head to foot in butter. Mum told me off a bit because butter wasn’t easy to come by, everybody had a good laugh, and from then on I was known as Butter Boy." His songs of his experiences are painful memories and the scars of unresolved injustice. "I’ve been to hell and back. If I hadn’t travelled that path, I probably wouldn’t have been a musician. In my own life I’ve done some things I’m not proud of. I have stuffed up, and I’d like to make up for it wherever I can." Despite his need to understand his grim start to life, you can’t help but admire the compassion that he feels for his people. But his music offers everybody, Indigenous and non--Indigenous, a unique view of life through the eyes of a stolen child. fromhttp://svc003.wic001g.server-web.com/News_Room/ATSIC_News/December_1997/archie.asp accordint to the website he once shared a bill with American legend Bob Dylan
