From what I heard, that scene was totally improvised. It was just an improv bit that they kept in. I think the director was a fan of Coldplay though and kept it in cause he thought it was funny. Voodoo is from MX but Stargate probably didn't start working on it til 3 years ago. I'll have to find the image, but I am pretty sure it was on a list of songs slated for MX. I'll post here when/if I find it.

I agree! Timbuktu is the highlight for me. I think Jonny's guitar is fantastic here and the effect in Chris' voice is awesome. Favorite song by far. I like Voodoo, although I share similar thoughts to you about it. The chorus is pretty catchy though and saves it for me. I do wish we could hear what it sounded like before though. I mean, it's all live aside from the synths. It's really no different than the backing keys for In My Place being played. ASFOS has the piano as a backing track as well, but so does Violet Hill. Coldplay have pretty much always used backing tracks, but I think it's more noticable now with the type of production. Not trying to argue one way or the other. Yeah I feel a similar way. I think I let people's comments hype me up too much. I do love the vocoder effect on Chris' vocals on Timbuktu though!
