yeah you're right but the thing is most young bands sign 5 or 6 album deals because theyre usually so desperate to get signed. so even if their first or second album does great, theyre stuck in that arrangement for a long time. so you have situations like Coldplays who single handedly seem to be keeping EMI alive even though they dont really want to be. but at the same time those sorts of contracts give a band a sense of security especially if they dont do too great. do labels see any of the profits from a bands tour?

i think what Radiohead did with in rainbows was wonderful, the album changed my life and it probably changed the music industry. but it doesnt work for 99% of bands out there. young bands need labels to help them get off the ground. labels have the resources and know-how to market and sell music to its full potential and that takes a lot of money and effort. every band would love to just make a great album then release it online for 10 bucks and sell millions. sadly the industry isnt that simple. it takes dozens of people to make an album and then get it out there and a good label streamlines that process for a young band. unfortunately that means taking a significant cut from the profits. i think bands need to accept that they need to work hard (like the rest of society) and tour hard if they want to make it in this crazy industry. they need to stop crying about people downloading their music because i can guarantee you when a band like coldplay plays to an arena 15 000 people, more than half of them would've never spent a cent on any of their albums or singles. in other words without free illegal downloads those arenas would be near empty.

^^ the fact that they call Recordings of the Middle East an album kills any credibility. 'Recordings' is a 5 track EP released a couple of years ago. Recently they've uploaded a few extra tracks so there are many versions of the EP which include the usual 5 tracks plus the new tracks released recently making it look like a full album when in actual fact its just a compilation of the EP and new songs.

The Strokes - another over due album Radiohead - so much anticipation! so much pressure! Cut Copy - new album Zonoscope out soon. cant wait The Panics - ran into some issues last year so they couldnt release the new album Coldplay - hopefully they build on the sound they had going on VLV RHCP - potential disaster in the making Foo Fighters - dont care much for the album but want to see them live so bad! The Middle East - one of the most well known aussie bands in the alt music world and we're still waiting on a debut LP Laura Marling - promised 2 albums in 2010. still waiting on no.2....... Kanye/JayZ - Watch The Tapes - pushed back cos MBDTF surpassed even kanye's expectations! haha Arctic Monkeys - know little or nothing about what they've been up to. The Big Pink - debut was one of the most underrated albums ever! lets hope no.2 is awesome and gets the love it deserves The White Stripes - been a fan since 2007, havent seen the release of a single album :S was it something i said?

yeah im about 100 pages into Life. wish i had more time and energy to read it cos its really entertaining and insightful.

if High Violet got it, you won't be hearing any complaints from me. it is a stunning record and i cant wait to see them on friday.

i think it differs from artist to artist, band to band. some bands dont like to lose their momentum so they keep going for a few years before taking a break. others like to change their style with every album so a break helps them do that. i think it also depends on how much time they like to spend in the studio. i know some bands who spend little more than a fortnight in the studio while others like working there for 8 to 10 months at a time.

imo Humbug was better than FWN and but nowhere near as good as Whatever People... in terms of pure musicianship Humbug was brilliant, the guitar work and drumming was great but lyrically it was alex's worst effort to date which is really what set them apart from a lot of other guitar rock bands. i think i mentioned this before but i'll say it again. i really hope they stay with the stoner rock thing they started on Humbug because i really enjoyed it and admired them for not going for a more accessible commercial sound like some bands i like *cough*muse*cough*

i dont think we have many people from Perth on this forum. at least not many interpol fans from perth. but if there are any out there this is your time to speak out haha theyre in sydney next week but with tickets going at 90 bucks a pop i opted out of going. sadly the bands doing venues less than half the size of the ones they did on their last tour and still struggling to sell them out. bit of a shame cos i thought their 4th album was more than decent :S

^^ exactly right. Polls show popularity, which is an objective measure and nothing more. Quality on the other hand is a subjective measure and is based on personal tastes. Despite the hearty efforts of many fangirls and fanboys over the years no album can ever be called "the best" just cos a lot of people say it is. But the WoM poll has one very very interesting aspect to it. that is comparing the position of a band in the countdown to how many replies their thread has. beach house and kanye have relatively few posts but will probably feature quite high in the countdown. but Interpol who have a lot more probably wont do as well. and i think thats one instance where a poll does in some way reflect the quality of an album.

Rated R v Songs for the Deaf? which one do people prefer songs for the deaf was one of my fave albums of the decade and easily the best hard rock album of the last couple of decades.

here is an idea of how much concerts cost in australia. i got standing tickets for all these shows. all in american dollars cos i dont know the current euro rate. Muse - 130 Linkin Park- 140 U2-100 LCD+Hot Chip - 85 Pearl Jam - 110 Phoenix - 88 Vampire Weekend - 65 they're that expensive for two reasons. one, bringing all their gear down to australia is quite costly and even more costly to move them from city to city, average distance between shows is over 1000km. two, the shows have incredible demand down here, almost every show i have been to this year has been a sell out. in the case of mumford they sold out both their shows in about 10mins and they said during the show it was one of the biggest headline shows they've ever played.

so who will headline groovin the moo 2011? official line up is announced a month from now. im really struggling to come up names. aussie headliners possibly The Living End or JBT? international headliners could be anyone but most seem to be taken already by BDO, Laneway, Falls , Future and Good Vibes. Vampire Weekend were the headliners last year so it will probably be a band of similar stature to them. maybe Fleet Foxes? but i just cant envisage them "headlining" a festival.

i think Wilco and Pearl Jam have a lot in common. PJ average about 2.5hr per show sometimes 3hrs. i think they were doing 2hr plus shows even on their 2nd and 3rd album tours. i have the feeling mumford+sons might head down a similar path over the next few years. well i at least hope so.

yeah good point briggs. out of all the bands in my top 10 albums i was a fan of only half of them at the start of the year.

i dont think ive ever been to a show (not including festivals) where i really wanted the band to finish or felt that they pushed it a bit too far. i guess it also depends on the intensity of the show. a very intense band can get away with playing 20 or 30mins less than the norm.

yeah now i think about it a few of my friends who dont usually listen to much rock still loved The Strokes. but what im saying is that you're simply more likely to like them if you listen to a lot of rock music.

i dont get how people are judging this year by the acts releasing albums. they might be totally shit......

but being stoned is the only way to appreciate music maaaaaaaaaan

would you call yourself a "rock fan"? i would say their brand of music can be a little difficult to enjoy if you dont generally like rock.
