  5. God, I listen to this album straight through all the time. The first time I listened I was in the car for a long road trip. I had tears in my eyes at the end. I wasn't a Coldplay fan until I listened through Viva La Vida, and I believe that it has forever changed the way that I look at music. I owe my soul to Coldplay. :shocked2:

If you have a music store nearby that sells books like "Blues guitar classics," or whatever genre you prefer, those usually have great exemplary tabs that demonstrate individual forms and styles and such. Little technical snippets here and there too. Basically by reading and playing tabs that you can play, you'll get closer and closer to being able to do so yourself.
  7. This actually works better in the opposite order...that is, tuning down from standard 1/2 step and then into DADGBd. The easiest way to do this would be to use an electronic guitar tuner that has standard chromatic tuning and has a button that can make it so it tunes to any # of flats or sharps. In this case, you would hit that button (flat) once, and then tune each string to that new tuning (from fat to skinny string, Eb Ab Db Gb Bb eb). THEN you loosen the low E string (with tuner still set to one flat) until it says you're playing a Db with that string. It will now be one octave lower than the higher Db string. In other words, they should ring out together and sound good when played simultaneously. Then you do the same for the high E string, bringing it down to what the tuner says is a Db as well. Then you put the Capo on the second fret and you're good to go! Doing this the other way, without a tuner, requires some tricks and know-how, which I don't feel I can explain accurately just through text.

I have known OF them for a long time, but never really heard anything by them...until last night when I listened to their Hazards of Love album. Rock opera? Eff yeah! I love albums with a story. I also really like The Crane Wife stuff. Basically, they don't disappoint me. Post away!

  11. It took a little work, but I was able to figure it out (I think) just by watching his hands and playing by ear. I could make a tab, but it may take a bit of time. I'm pretty certain that what I'm playing is close to or exactly what he's doing, if I do say so myself :wink3:

  14. Yes! Queens of the Stone Age is a very interesting group. I recommend the album "Songs For The Deaf." The song "No One Knows" is my fave by them, and it's on that album. Them Crooked Vultures is like Queens of the Stone Age, but since you've got John Paul Jones, ex-member of the legendary Zeppelin, and Dave Grohl's (I :heart: Foo Fighters) combined songwriting talents and experience, it makes for some nifty sounds.
  15. Nah, not gonna shun you, you're awesome! I'm not a huge fan of Oasis, but I always thought Wonderwall was one of those songs that transcended their fanbase and into popular culture. Wrong-ish am I! Kings of Leon are really an acquired taste. Try giving their newest album (Only By The Night) a shot. Most of their older stuff, I do not care for, but their most recent I really really like. That song was a diamond in the rough. I have a feeling Red Hot Chili Peppers was one of the surprises for you. It really doesn't sound like most of what people hear by, them, so you're probably not alone :cool: I've noticed that my tape has quite a bit more energy than most of the ones I've downloaded/seen here so far. Just so prospective downloaders know what they're getting into ;)
  16. Yeah, I love this one as well, one of my favorite Radiohead songs. I was searching for a good opener for this tape for a while, and when I hit this on shuffle I was like "YES PLEASE!" I'm glad we're both Radiohead-heads :) Agreed, the singer's voice isn't what draws me to this song. I like it for the simple and catchy rhythms goin' on here. I also kind of like the lyrics...just not the voice. We're on the same page here. ;) It's Twist My Arm, by The Tragically Hip, a Canadian band:laugh3:. Don't know much about these guys, but I like this song... This is a largely unknown group from the 80's, starting out indie but then getting signed to Epic Records (Ben Folds, Imogen Heap, and Iron Maiden, among others). They're called Screaming Trees. I definitely recommend looking into more of their material. This is by far their most stylish and best song, though. I see what you mean by Jeff Buckley, but they actually remind me abit of the Rolling Stones with this song. I can see the 70's concept here, but this is from a 1995 album!:laugh3: This is the Red Hot Chili Peppers, a track from their One Hot Minute album, which they recorded while their main guitarist (John Frusciante) was on hiatus due to drug abuse and rehab. They made sure his stand-in was also influened by Hendrix though (hence 70's feel, haha). Most RHCP fans don't care much for this album because of it, but I really like a lot of it, and this song gets my blood flowing :wink3: Absolutely right, you do know this! It is indeed Pinch Me, by Barenaked Ladies. :cool: They're awesome. We do have great taste in music! Haha, that's an interesting observation. This is a VERY new band (2009), of the kind often called a "supergroup." They call themselves Them Crooked Vultures, and they are Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters/Nirvana), and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin). The marriage of these talents is really something spectacular, especially if you like Queens of the Stone Age, because Josh Homme is the vocalist/guitarist/primary songwriter. But yeah, the rest of their debut album is pretty awesome. This song is just the quirkiest and busiest musically, so it got in. :P I smile at the woooo as well :D! This is relatively old Kings Of Leon, this one's called The Bucket. I've fallen for them recently, and felt this song really fit in at this point of the tape. There's something about his voice that I totally agree with you on. It's very, very unique, and he kind of winces every now and then similarly to how Steven Tyler of Aerosmith does (which I think adds a lot of emotion). I hope this doesn't offend or set you off, but I think I should be honest with you; They're a 90's Christian rock band from Nashville, Tennessee. Jars Of Clay. I'm not a devout Christian by any means, but I find that Christian rock which doesn't constantly mention Jesus is really deep and applicable to other emotions. Like, I hear the lyrics of this song and think of this guy singing to his long-lost girl who he hopes with all his heart will return to him and "chase away these shadows." Anyway, they're Eleventh Hour album is quite good, go check it out :) Indie for sure! This is We Are Scientists, and started out indie, but became successful in the mainstream and are now signed to Virgin Records. They're a pretty big deal. Plus, the two main guys are hilarious, lovable individuals. This song made me tear the first time I heard it. It's pretty deep. The vocals...yeah I agree. They're not pretty, but he's singing like that to sort of be melodramatic. This is the closing track The Airborne Toxic Event. I really like these guys (and girl...the violinist). It's really pretty, and I love the way it picks up halfway through. The transitional part there in the middle is probably my second favorite part of the song.:laugh3: This song truly speaks through the instruments, though. I'm kind of surprised that you don't know the song. This is Wonderwall, an Oasis cover. It's covered by Cartel, a band that I really don't know anything about, but I downloaded this track and I really like what they did with the original song. Again, kind of surprising that you're not familiar with Oasis...hmm. This is Petra Haden (vocals), and Bill Frisell (guitar). Not sure where you can find this recording, but they collaborated/recorded this in 2005. Don't know much about these people (once again), but I love this cover. (Love Coldplay's more of course ;) ). It's very well done, and totally does it justice! This is probably my favorite American rock band ever, Pearl Jam. It's the closer off their 2nd most recent album (self-titled), for which I went and saw them for the first concert of my life. :smug: They don't usually sound like this, but they always manage to pull artsy, interesting songs out of their arses when you least expect it. Actually...it's come to be expected of them nowadays. Anyway, check them out, you'll like them. I couldn't resist, this was one of those songs that made me tear up on the first listen. I discovered Keane very recently, and they make me very happy :). I think it's funny that I used a handful of songs that were closers on their own album, but this song was somewhere in the middle of Under The Iron Sea. But I thought...if there was one song by Keane that I could put in, it was this one. Thank you very much for reviewing it!   18. Awesome! Finally my review was spotted! I really want mine reviewed though...pretty sure nobody did that for me yet. Anyway, I've grown to like Only Talking Sense. It was one of those songs that takes me several listens to get acquainted with, and then afterwards I love it. So set aside your grief! :D Once again, really great mix. And that's coming from a nation-born American. I plan to pursue many of these artists' material further :smug: ... So I feel like just posting the linky to my mix...is that frowned upon? I REALLY WANT A REVIEW AAAUUUGH :cry:

  22. Here we go! Review time! Track 1 Here is a great electric guitar intro in my opinion…reminds me a bit of Coldplay mixed with Incubus. Love the singer’s voice too, and the synth overlays are a great touch during the verses. I dig the way the chorus explodes with energy but remains concretely related to the intro/verse. Makes me excited to listen to the rest of this tape! I’d guess at the title being “The Spaces Between,” only because it seems so obvious. Track 2 Another energy-filled song, mainly due to the tempo and hi-hat work on precussion. Guitar riff at intro and interlude reminds me of Kings of Leon, which is a very good thing in my book. Gets quiet and slow but then quite intense near the end. Like it more every time I listen to it. Track 3 I like how it transitions from the previous track, with what sounds like plucked violin strings that fade into acoustic strumming. I also really like the lyrics in this one…kind of surreal and sublime, “Birds and guns, pelicans and turtle doves.” More contemplative, but still pretty energetic once the other instruments kick it off. Track 4 Takes the energy down a few notches, opening with a female singer solo with an acoustic guitar, who is soon accompanied by electric guitar arpeggios, synth, electric bass, and then finally it breaks out with drums and a string ensemble. Her voice is wonderful :) Track 5 An ambient piano opener, with a pleasantly rough but very articulate male voice. Lots of background sounds for even more ambience. Love how the singer sings along with the guitar solo! Track 6 Opens with ukulele I think, which is awesome. Not sure if I enjoy the vocals on this one, they were off-putting at first but after a second listen they grew on me a bit more; the strings are a nice touch. Track 7 Piano and string driven melody, sans drums, which makes me happy. I also really like this guy’s voice. Vaguely reminds me of Michael Stipe, but also someone else who I can’t remember the name of. Track 8 How did you know I was a Spanish student!? This is great, now I can add this to my unembellished Latin music collection. Not only can I understand the lyrics after a listen or two, but I kind of like the song in general. Very atypical Latin music. Track 9 Funny how the Spanish vocals faded out right into English with acoustic guitar and piano (in a good way!). There are woodwinds in the background! I also like the line “Ain’t it funny, box full o’ honey.” Track 10 I’m not sure what to think of this one…it kind of makes me sad for some reason. A little repetitive too, though that’s not really an issue. This is kind of skippable, but maybe I just have to listen to it more. Track 11 I am instantly dragged into this one with the intro…voice sounds like Our Lady Peace. But not…contrasts heavily compared to previous few tracks because, well, it’s heavy! Kind of epic. I like epic. Track 12 Hmm…acoustic guitar and synth team up in the beginning, which then turns into a more electronic-vibe. I like stuff like this, it’s quirky to me. Definitely good driving music ;) Track 13 This one’s nothing special to me, for it seems as soon as I started listening to it, it was over. Maybe just nothing stands out in it, kind of bland. Certainly not bad though! Track 14 Ooh a language I don’t know! French? Anyway, I really like the way the horns mesh with the guitars. Foreign music is always very appealing to me, even when I can’t translate the lyrics. Sometimes I don’t even want to because it maintains the mysterious aura held over the song. Very cool track :) Track 15 Okay pretty sure this is German now. I like it! I’m very interested to learn more about who these foreign bands are, being a citizen of the U.S.A. who has only scratched the surface of European artists. Track 16 Fields of Eden…sounds familiar, but I’ve definitely never heard this song before. I really enjoy the dynamics of this song. The transitions are very relaxing. Track 17 Cool delay effect on acoustic for the intro. Great voice too; love the range. The whole thing is very echo-ey and creates a good atmosphere. Track 18 Power chord! And then a few more times! And now Spanish again! This mix is awesomesauce. Track 19. Starts how pretty much most of these songs do, but that’s certainly a good thing. I like this dude’s voice. Very heavily emotional, lyrically and musically. Love the line, “Where you end, I begin.” Perfect lead up for the very end which is… Track 20 …a rather epic French rock song. Distortion, wailing electric guitars, and a pause near the end for a vocal solo. This mix goes out with a bang! I mean, the song technically fades out (very tastily, might I add), but still a BANG! Wow…incredible mixtape. This person knows what they’re doing. Also, most of it is very relevant to my tastes, despite the maker knowing nothing about me. Maybe I’m just very open-minded and enjoy a wide range of music, but most of the stuff on here fits in with itself; it’s not all over the place. Also…this mix is LONG. I’m super excited to see the tracklisting! :D
