I've heard that the phone actually comes together with the service and that you don't need to buy one from the phone company... Is this true? Where I'm from, you have to get the phone and the service separately... So even if you change telecoms, you would still be using the same mobile, only switching the networks :)I know I am being harsh to Coldplay by saying this, but they can (or rather could have) prevented the over-hype... They signed themselves unto a huge label EMI and allowed the whole media machine linked to EMI to go into overdrive. Option 1: they could have opted to switch labels. Option 2: they could have played against EMI efforts to hype-up X&Y. Which brings me to the second point... It is good that Coldplay are ambitious. As they have said on various occasions, they want to improve their craft and try out new sounds; also I think there is an eagerness to see how 'big' they can get as a band. No harm there, I think most fans will allow them that (even if they use hype to become commercial behemoths). But, they need to be consistent in their actions, in line with what they've said. Fans have made hell over X&Y not because Coldplay have changed their style, but because they have either a) let standards slip; or b) mis-stepped a bit in the marketing department. On X&Y not being up to mark... they've always said they will only release stuff that's good music. X&Y is quite good, but only quite (compared to their previous efforts). Weak points: overproduction, some lyrics of questionable quality, inconsistency blah blah blah... In short, it's not quite up to expectations. All these point to the album being rushed out despite taking 1 1/2 years to make... Well, if they needed more time to grow into it, they should've taken more time :rolleyes: Also, Will has said 2 things are important to them: melody and emotion. X&Y has lots of beautiful melodies, but the emotion is suspect at times, mostly due to Chris' lyrics and melodies (the others do play their hearts out). Assuming that the band did not do these things deliberately, then these are signs that the band is not having everything under control, thus the concern of long-standing fans (or in fact any music fan who has an appreciation for good music)... There is an alternative explanation: that they did deliberately want the 'weak points' in X&Y but they got their marketing side wrong. If X&Y is viewed as a concept album about 'the tension of opposites' as Chris has explained it, then all the so-called weak points would meld seamlessly into the album. If this is the case, then why didn't they take that tack with the media in publicising the album? Was it because they wanted to sell more albums and knew that this tack would work less well? Were they somehow 'forced' by EMI to take this tack? Did they feel so insecure about how the album would sell that they took the tack that would sell the most? Or do they truly not care about people's perception to X&Y and opinions of them as a band? etc... Now, you see how rabidly and genuinely some of us fans feel for this band? :rolleyes: To us, it's not a simple 'X&Y is good, so be happy...' kinda thing, it's the perception that they could have done better with X&Y that bothers us... Just listen to them in concert playing the X&Y songs, they sound better in those 'weak' areas compared to the album versions. The fourth album will not lose them their pre-Parachutes / Parachutes fans due to changes in sound... Fans may leave if they continue churning out stuff that is not worthy of what they're capable of.
