1. Parachutes by far is the most stripped down album and you still have synth strings and other odd effects. It's the art of how they use them that makes it work. You don't want to overwhelm the listener with all kinds of wild things (HFTWs problem among many others if you need an example).
2. I'm 99% sure that Guy managed most of the production on Ghost Stories if I recall it correctly. That had to have a huge impact. Songs like Always in My Head, Fly On, Ghost Story, and both Os really bring home that feeling of an older album, the layering, mastering, it's all there.
3. And without fail he blends two verses' lyrics together, classic.
4. We got Trouble tonight, I'm not gonna update my post but I'm sure it's gonna fit in with X&Y in being not applicable for ranking. On the bright side they're running out of safe picks. Only a matter of time until we get something juicy.
5. Man the X&Y tracks have so many lines related to Earth, the sea, space, the sky, etc.
6. Honestly I think a lot of it has to do with Chris's vocals. I'm listening to X&Y now because I figured I might as well keep going and White Shadows can sound futuristic and cold but Chris's voice is so heavenly it all just works. I think his biggest vocal shift was from AROBTTH to X&Y, but he honestly just went from one good voice to another. X&Y's is more mature but has a sweeter tone to it, and it fits X&Y's illustrious composition compared to AROBTTH's more gritty tones.
7. I'm currently listening to AROBTTH (The song and the album) and I can essentially picture the band playing the song with the dynamics and production present in the song. It's an art they got right almost instantly and then decided to throw away post-Viva. Many critics share the same opinion that they sound plastic and sterile now.
8. I think rich tones that real instruments offer add a lot to a track and can really help it feel like a performance.
9. The piano in Green Eyes was like that to me for a while until I started getting some better audio equipment.
10. Wow I just heard a new harmony in the studio version of Politik. I actually don't listen to AROBTTH very much because I feel like it's such a special album that I need to respect it by not overdoing it. Tonight I decided to blast it on my sound system and after the bridge you can begin to pick up a lower harmony under Chris's "Ooooh my love, yooou, aaarre." I noticed it more in the right channel but maybe it's in the left and my hearing isn't what I think it is.
11. Ever since I found that set in Sydney a few days ago I've been on the hunt for performances I may have missed. Haven't come up with anything yet but if that was laying around with 20k views I'm sure there's more.
12. Oh cmon now. Just go ahead and re read this quote and the one above it a couple times until it sinks in. The thread's purpose is a little too meta. It's in the Coldplay: The Band, The Music section which already gives you an idea of what the threads should be about. I don't see why there needs to be a thread facilitating general discography discussion seeing as the sub-forum shares that exact use. If anything it's stagnating new threads being made on Coldplay's music because most of them could be met with "Just use the Coldplaying thread." The New and Old threads represent the themes, ideas, music, and performances of the band during certain times and more importantly phases in their career. To specifically speak for the Oldplaying thread, the time period is over, it's a clear cut period of time that can be analyzed and contrasted from current works (which I think is important to do because it brings out qualities in old works that aren't there in the newer ones) so it can facilitate really great, usually focused discussion.
13. Jonny in my opinion has had the most genius moments throughout Coldplay's history. So many great riffs, hooks, and even tiny little fills like on Everything's Not Lost. I think it's clearer now more than ever, pre-MX everyone was doing amazing things on each track. Hey Johnny B. Goode is a great song, and I think they could do an ok cover, but I've yet to see the video evidence so...
14. I remember reading somewhere that he'll be back. In the meantime if you haven't read it, check out Matt McGinn's book. Mobile Link: http://www.amazon.com/Roadie-My-Life-Road-Coldplay/dp/1907554297
15. Baby steps, there are a lot of shows to go.
16. The oldplay thread by far is the most quality thread on the forum. There's a very good reason it's gone over 100 pages and averages most posts per week than other "similar" threads, even if it's the few same people participating. It's also a blessing on the entire forum it exists because for the most part it keeps "inflammatory" posts contained.
17. By the way "Roadie" is a really nice little read. I'd love to see Matt write more as I really enjoyed his writing style, I'll probably re read it soon as it's been at least 6 years since I last read it. 18. Have they exited to "O" every night? That's pretty cool.
19. I think the request songs are kind of fun. Think about how many we'll get to hear over the tour, even if they sometimes seem kind of half-a**ed. My guess for tonight is Strawberry Swing.
20. Here's a playlist of all the known videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=BO0M_zooT4U;list=PL7YmItRnyeODVailPKw4E4eu6t_7XwHkx Mobile Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO0M_zooT4U&list=PL7YmItRnyeODVailPKw4E4eu6t_7XwHkx
21. When you've been taking jabs from everyone including the band for the past 6 years the pain goes away.
22. If you find it let us know. As far as I know there isn't a recording of the whole thing. Not enough camera phones back then to get bootlegs either. With that being said check out Live 2003 if you haven't.
23. I love how Chris really used to get into songs like Politik.
24. If Chris could actually hit the notes and put a little effort into it the song wouldn't be THAT bad. Only part of it is available on YouTube. If I recall correctly the entire thing was not broadcasted, only part. Either way it was amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbUVMaKnXn4 Mobile Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbUVMaKnXn4
