๐ Coldplay: Moon Music ๐ต | Out October 4th | Discussion
https://x.com/planetacoldplay/status/1800275752509718750 Some more snippets from the video recording on this page. Has anyone heard the ~5 seconds of verse for FLIFIL that was on twitter somewhere? I canโt find it and I donโt know if itโs real but sounded a bit drab (slightly electronic and bare with not a great transition into the chorus)โฆ The fact that all snips around the song are mainly the chorus sort of makes me worried that itโs just a big song with forgettable verses. Anyway, sorry for being a downer lol

Agree with that^ However I do believe that Coldplay have become much bigger than their type of music warrants today. I mean they are a household name now and there are more casual fans of the band than ever before who know them only through their hits (Paradise, Viva, The Scientist, Yellow, ASFOS, SJLT). This imo skews their listener profile and so for them to carry these fans to their next album, they need to have Pop songs, ensure relevance by collaborations etc. So today, I don't understand Chris. Imo he's not being honest with himself. They say they don't care about chart performance but hire Max Martin as the producer, release 100 versions of Higher Power hoping to get it up there, collaborate with BTS even though it's very difficult to get it to work. They seem to exist in a kind of duopoly now -- songs that are made to show their musician skills (eg Coloratura) and then songs that are made to get hits (My Universe). The hardest thing in music is to write a good song that can also be popular -- which is what they achieved with their initial albums but are not doing imo with the newer ones. The genre they are the best at (maybe not what they want to go back to) is Indie Rock, Soft Rock, BritPop, etc and I think that their best hits (Scientist, Yellow, Fix You, Clocks, Viva, even Paradise) came from them being true to that. They felt authentic. I don't mean for them to "stay in their lane" and only do those genres but to just stay authentic. Which is why them not promoting EL grinds my gears the most. That's a GOOD Album. It has good ideas, good collection of genres to explore, some catchy moments and feels authentic. But they hardly promoted it because they thought they wouldn't be able to get the casual fans along with them for that ride. That's somewhat defeatist in my opinion. If you believe in your album then believe that the people will come, instead it ended up feeling like a interlude. With MOTS, however much they try to highlight the "allegorical" ideas, its a half baked concept which turns it into a gimmick. Aliens and whatnot -- there's no authenticity. But since Chris is such a songwriting genius, I continue to be a fan and continue to enjoy some of their work. The core of all their songs is good but all the dress up is like a poor entry into a fancy dress competition.

Just listened via VPN (thanks Singapore). Yes, lyrically sort of poor. But I think the instrumentation of some songs isn't being discussed enough. Humankind for all its lyrical misgivings has a banging riff and a catchy chorus. Loved that one from the first listen. Also Biutyful is not everyone's cup of tea -- but I really like the melody and the duet. It's a cool new idea that hasn't been used often in pop music. Let Somebody Go will definitely have a single version like Everglow and it can have staying power. POTP is going to be awesome live -- and obviously Coloratura is great. Overall, I think My Universe is the only one I'm truly underwhelmed by. And weirdly I don't understand the love for Infinity Sign. It's good like Life in Technicolor was good. As a full song I hope they have a b-side with Infinity Sign II with full Life is Beautiful lyrics.

๐ช Coldplay: Music of the Spheres ๐ช | Out Now! | Discussion
Hey all, I know its off topic (would appreciate if someone could guide me to the correct place) -- I bought a ticket to the Seattle Climate Pledge Arena show but got another from a friend as well. So I'm looking to sell (at the price I bought them for) but ticketmaster says they are non-transferable. Does anyone have an idea on how this can work? Please PM me if you do. Thanks ?

If there is one thing I learned from the everyday life era, it was that we grossly overthink the meaning of the teasing ? In the end the 1919, sun, moon, choice for black and white thumbnails didn't mean much beyond the obvious...

LP8 Thread - Everyday Life
Interesting discussion - I already caved though. :joy: Have ordered my copy so hope its okay :D The boys always have great live performances. But if I take the example of Everyday Life (the song), I didn't hear the song before the performance and while I still enjoyed it, I only appreciated it's beauty after hearing the studio version... Dunno, for me I think, the studio version sets a kind of expectation of the song and the live version shatters it and it feels great. But the other way round takes away from both the things -- the performance seems alien and the album then will feel weird.

Yeah. Could be. I'm watching on a pretty low quality stream and it kills the audio as well: maybe that's why the energy didn't translate quick. I was still smiling like a doofus throughout though XD

LP8 Thread - Everyday Life
It wasn't really a review though... But here you go (just used google translate so there may be mistakes) Coldplay is back with their long-awaited new album, "Everyday Life," which will be released on November 22. After seven successful studio albums, of which "A Head Full Of Dreams" was the last in 2015, the UK band now releases an eighth studio album. "Everyday Life" has 16 numbers, divided into two parts of 8 numbers, "Sunrise" and "Sunset". The cover of the album dates from 1919 and is a photograph of a band of the great-grandfather of band member Johnny Buckland. The album is, as the title suggests, a reaction to contemporary life and touches on current topics such as war, the refugee crisis, the rise of right-wing nationalism, sexism, racism, police violence, corruption and gun control. The band started writing the album during the two-year tour following "A Head Full Of Dreams". This tour was the fourth largest tour of all time in the world and the new album is therefore a reaction to the turbulent times the band went through and the political chaos that arose around the same period. The 16 songs were recorded at various locations worldwide and the album was produced by "The Dream Team". Artists from different countries, including Stromae, Femi Kuti, Tiwa Savage and Jacob Collier, can also be heard on the album. Coldplay wishes to convey a message of "Peace and Love" with "Everyday Life", which can also be read on the album in Arabic. With lyrics like "I Could Be You, You Could Be Me", the band brings out a sense of togetherness, love and empathy.

Exactly what I wanted to say XD These titles are like the first things that might come to mind :P Cmon Chris! Lol. Hopefully the album is great! I slept through all of this excitement btw :( smh

I agree completely! The uniqueness is in Jonny's tone, Chris's voice and the atmosphere/build-up created by the rhythm section (Will and Guy). Even if every song is not a "bleeding exploration of rock's edges" (as one article put it some time ago I remember), it is still uniquely and distinctly Coldplay -- which makes even their so-called lesser works awesome for me!

I wonder if its been discussed before... but I think that even if they play at Tidal, the rest of us won't get to hear that. Tidal is known for "exclusive" events and releases...
