No, your right. But then again Damon has never given a crap whether American radio stations play his music.

Plus he doesn't cares whether it's commercially successful or not. So I mean he isn't going to cater to radio stations and make sure he includes radio friendly songs on his album.

One more reason to EFFING LUV the man! And crap its not like I listen to American radio and I live in the damn country! :laugh3:

I totally agree - Damon isn't concerned with whether or not people like his stuff and that's something I love about him. It makes him as good as he is, but unfortunately the nature of Gorillaz and the state of the economy means that they may not be making enough money. It's a catch-22. If he compromises the music just to get airplay, they'll lose fans, but if they don't get airplay, they won't have people buying tickets. It's just such a difficult time for them.

People on the GU were complaining about them promoting Internet explorer 9, but money doesn't grow on trees, and sometimes you just have to do things you don't want to. People expect waaay too much. They are creating totally inspirational music and artwork and I'm so greatful to them for it.

Sorry. That was a bit of a ramble :D

And that's how Murdoc's twitter and the Sub Division Fanclub appeared.

Seriously, if PB should have been really succesful, they wouldn't need these two things.

Also, it seems that the Experience edition users like me are not giving us new content. The only things i have are four videos from the Roundhouse shows an the 3D Escape to Plastic Beach Game. Then, nothing. Everything else goes to the Sub-Divisioners.

I really don't want to consider my edition as a waste, but i'm afraid it is (unless they put new content).

Yeah they do have to do a bit of promoting unfortunately. Actually my first taste of Gorillaz came before I really knew who they were-the dance version of 19/2000 played in an ad for Dentyne gum. I thought it sounded catchy. Later when I bought the album and heard the virst version I THOUGHT it sounded familar-then the club version came on toward the end and I was like, 'OK! I know this!' I also remember they promoted 'Feel Good Inc' as a call tone for I think Verizon. But really, they're not whoring themselves out like so many of these acts and I respect them for doing what they need to.

Honestly, if I meet Damon or Jamie (this would have to be HUGE fate BTW) at the PHX show, I'm giving them a big hug and telling them THANK YOU. Just hope I don't scare them.

QFT!

Damon Albarn is a genius when it comes to songwriting. I'm talking about him being in Gorillaz of course. But too bad at concerts, they use too many samples and pre-recorded track. Complexity is made easy, thus the lack of originality. Maybe that's just me though.

Was he not a good song writer in Blur then? Only Gorillaz?

Ah, well they have to do that because not everyone who is a part of those songs can be at every concert. There are like a million people on each song and it would be impossible to get them all on stage for every song for every concert they play. A band like Gorillaz is really hard to make work at live events. But with what they have I think they are making it work the best they can :)

Welcome to the thread btw. I can't remember if you've posted in here before?

Well, the songs live sound good (for example, i really don't like Glitter Freeze in the record, but i have to admit that the live version is very energetic and pretty awesome).

I don't know if there's any bas live version in the shows, but if i have to choose one, i will say Rhinestone Eyes.

It loses a lot from the sleepy/bored sound that Damon puts on the album. Sound more like a rare speech, and the drums are also in the wrong spot. They use two acoustic drums, when one of them could easily play the electronic drumset and the other one play the acoustic one.

I swear to God whenever I hear GF on cd I always imagine how crazy-ass awesome it would be live-THANK YOU for confirming this for me BB! :D

So RE is more like spoken word performed live then? Hmmmm!

In Blur, to me he was just that guy who wrote catchy tunes and was helped by their guitarist. But in Gorillaz, he's the mind behind the whole band/concept. He's the one who comes up with all these ideas on how to make music diversification.

Well, yes I agree there are tons of parts to integrate all of that in concerts, but I feel like they use too much pre-recorded stuff, they could have hired local artists if it's too much of a trouble taking their own personnels with them. But like I said, that's probably just me.

And yeah, I'm a newbie here, thanks for the warm welcome :)

I think to use recordings would be much easier and cut down cost? Because it's not exactly cheap to have a world tour being Gorillaz, they probably have the most live members than most bands.

I agree, in Gorillaz, he's the mastermind, but the composing credits goes under the name Gorillaz, I'm not sure whether it's completely Damon or with help from contributors. Someone can clear me on this please?

In Blur, I think those were the days where he's not so famous, so catchy tunes is important if they want to make it big. However, I think he's the mastermind behind the Britpop genre. And yeah, Graham influences the music a lot too. It's like having 2 main composers in a band, but quite a good combination.

@tarareid : Hello there! Fellow Damon fangirl? :P

Yeah, good point; they could have used one electronic drum set and an acoustic one. But perhaps someone else plays it? The whole Gorillaz live setting is huge, can't exactly pinpoint who plays what.

Well in Blur he created Britpop, which I mean, it really did save British culture for a time. I think everything he has done so far though musically has been exceptionally diverse.

What's your name? :D I'm Liz

Watching Bananaz you see that the main idea for the song and probably about 80% of the song is all Damon's ideas. In the studio though it changes a bit as he starts getting in there with other people and seeing how it sounds. So I would say it's him, but he didn't want Gorillaz to be another band that was focused on him at all, so I think that's why he shares the credit with everyone.

He definitely was more famous in Blur! Paparazzi's always outside his house, him and Justine in every magazine. Britpop dayz were crazy. And really thanks to all that is why we even have Gorillaz. He wanted to make music again but didn't want all the crap that came with being a front man. Hence why they played behind a curtain for the first album, and the whole concept of Gorillaz being a cartoon band.

I must watch Bananaz someday.

Haha, it kind of proves that Damon cares more about the music than credits.

I thought the Gorillaz concept was a parody of the music and bands that were featured on MTV?

There are like two radical sides from Damon in live shows

First you got the Blur side, which he doesn't care if some things go wrong, he just wants to have fun.

And then there's the Gorillaz side, which he wants everything to go in sync, not one mess up.

Well it was that too. And it allowed Damon to not be the typical "frontman" of a band anymore, with all or most of the attention placed on the singer. At least that's how he put it :P

Yes! hahaha and Blur were always so drunk during most of their shows. Even at the reunion shows last year it had a fun atmosphere to it, I liked how Damon and Phil Daniels still played around with each other during Parklife especially. :D

Gorillaz is totally a different thing.

I know! I love the alternative Glitter Freeze. I much prefer it to the album version. Damon's vocals add a lot to it, I think.

There's speculation that they might release either a b-sides album or a plastic beach part 2 early in the new year, but no-one knows anything when it comes to Gorillaz :D

Like some users on the G-U forums says: "I won't expect much guys... it's Gorillaz"

UGH, I'm seriously sick of the G U forum's negativity about everything they do lately.

I think they will release some b sides.. didn't they say they had enough leftover songs to make about 12 more Plastic Beach albums?

THANK YOU FOR THIS BB!!!!! Yeah I think GU is more a Jamie-minded forum from what I have read (NOT anything wrong with THAT, Jamie is a genius-and hell yeah, he's VERY hot!)-which is cool, but a lot of people bash on Damon rather needlessly there. Do we bash on Jamie in Damon's threads or this one for that matter? HELL NO! We're fans of Jamie as well! It actually saddens me in that respect as Jamie (and obviously Damon) are well aware of GU-I think Jamie has even done interviews with them and given them shout-outs. That just seems disrespectful to the whole thing if you ask me. :(

I would LUV to hear more Gorillaz schtuff-especially if they have the leftover music I keep hearing about. That version of Glitter Freeze, for example, is amazing!!:D

Well, for once i kinda have to agree on that phrase. The lack of any good surprises that were present in the last phases and the whole treatment to the fans (which is seriously a flaw in this phase) left them with that taste. It's not that they endiose a person more than another. It's just that they can't really trust the management this time.

And yes, i want to see the next songs. Here's the name of some of them:

-Leviathan

-A Very Dark night

-Crashing Down

-Apple Cards

-Sloped Tropics

Thats understandable. Awww, I'm just excited to see this concert and thankful that no more shows have been canceled-I hope this good luck continues for them. It really is a one-of-a-kind show and tour.

The names alone of the new songs sounds very intriuging! I wanna hear these like NOW! :laugh3:
