I Have Heard The New Album. I Now Hate 'Speed of Sound'

Featured Replies

X & Y is amazing. It's my favorite Coldplay album, ever. I'm listening to the album the second time through now, and I love it even more. I'm going to like it even more the third time around. This album is definitely awesome from the get-go, but it's a grower at the same time. I'm so happy right now.

But how much does Speed of Sound suck after you've heard the whole album?

Answer: A whole lot.

This new album goes in an entirely new direction. Speed of Sound, while a good song on its own, just sits in the middle of the album like a 'Clocks Redux.' All the other songs have similar threads, but Speed of Sound doesn't fit with the rest, in my opinion. Maybe I'll grow to like it more, but as of right now, it is completely jarring and I don't like it at all. The rest of the album is so much better than this song I can't bring myself to listen to it. I skip it while listening.

What are your guys' thoughts? What do you think of the song now that it's in the context of the album? Do you like it more? Like it less? Feel the same?

I think it fits in ok, its just that we all overplayed it a ton when it came out and now it sticks out because we've heard it so much more, and as its not the greatest of songs we're getting a bit bored of it. I think give it a few weeks itll fit in just fine

Perhaps you're right. But all of the other songs just sound 'better.' I don't think 'Speed of Sound' fits into this album the same way I don't think 'In My Place' belongs on AROBTTH (even though it's a good song in its own right).

I agree.... I keep skipping Speeed of sound while listening to the new album.

I think it's the worst song in X&Y.

I like it but the rest is soooooooo much better!!!!!!!!!

Agreed! I'm in love with this album. Going to listen and listen and listen until my brain explodes.

Well, maybe not that much. If I die, I can't listen anymore.

Ooh i don't know about that one, i think In My Place was perfect on AROBTTH , but i suppose it was In My Place that got me into Coldplay in the first place, so it not the same for me. I do have to say though i do think SoS is the weakest song on the album. BUt i think it fits in, like A Whisper, i think that fits in to AROBTTH even though i really don't like it. :( :wink3:

'In My Place' is what got me into Coldplay as well. I couldn't stand 'Yellow' when it first came out (now I really like it). When I bought AROBTTH after I heard 'In My Place' I just didn't think the song fit with the rest. It sounded more like 'Parachutes' than AROBTTH. Chris has said that himself, and he says the same thing about Speed of Sound, how it sounds like AROBTTH. But we'll see - I'll give it some time and I'll probably come to like it more. Right now, I'm so blown away by the new stuff I can't bring myself to even give the time of day to SOS.

^lol, thats exactly the same with me! When i first heard Yellow, i thought coldplay were a joke band, i mean what sort of band sings a song about a colour!!!

Right now, I'm so blown away by the new stuff I can't bring myself to even give the time of day to SOS.

so true!

I have to say In my place is not one of my fav from AROBTTH...

I really started to love Coldplay with The scientist, Politik and Amsterdam...

And now I'm in love with White Shadows, Fix you, Swallowed in the sea and all the other songs but Speed of Sound...  I think I listened to SOS a bit too much.. :D

Me too.

I don't hate the song, but it's definately not a song that represents the album and I don't like it. I really wish Coldplay would have chosen 'White Shadows' as their first single, and then 'Fix You' as their secound.

Yeah, good suggestion. Anything but Speed of Sound. Haha.

I don't like Coldplay's philosophy of releasing something 'safe' that sounds like their old stuff as the lead single on an album. I wish they'd do it the U2 way - release something really new sounding and shocking the audience.

It's definatley going to be the track I'll be skipping when I listen to the album.

I was never a big Speed of Sound fan to begin with. It's good, but after hearing the album, it's definetly the weakest track and there are much stronger releases on the record. But I understand why the did release it first off, because it does sound a bit like Clocks and they want a bridge from AROBTTH and X&Y.

they ahve to release white shadows. that should get to number one!

To be honest, I like SOS a lot more now when I hear it as a part of the whole album. :)

Miggy D, Hello, I'm unable to download the torrent that's randomly posted out there. Any suggestions ? Anyway you could just send each song to me via e-mail ? It really doesn't matter to me the format. Thanks a million.

I think we all just overplayed SOS. I don't think it is anywhere NEAR as jarring as A Whisper was in Rush of Blood.

Of course we're skipping over SOS - the rest of the album is so new and interesting. I'm shocked at how good this album is from beginning to end - only Low and Square One have been difficult for me to get into so far.

And Fix You is the best song they've written.

Fix You is definitely up there. One of their best. :)

ha...same here...I didnt like In my place as first single and now SOS... :dozey:

In my place was awesome, way better than SOS :P

I agree that SOS doesn't really represent the album. I think they really should have chosen something different, something that makes it more obvious that they've gone in a different direction with this album. BUT I'm sure they thought long and hard about the first single....and I'm sure there's a good reason as to why they chose SOS.. :)

I agree. When I was listening to the leak, I definitely skipped this song the first few times. Once I have the actual album in my hand or in my cd player rather, I will probably get used to SOS again.

I wouldn't say it's the worst song on the album, that would go to 'Low'.

Well, considering the diverse styles present on "X&Y", "Speed Of Sound" deserves as much a place on the album as a song like "Square One" or "'Til Kingdom Come" The whole album doesn't really have a unifying "sound" other than the usual Coldplay staples of pianos and sharp guitars. It's their most diverse record.

To be fair, 'Til Kingdom Come' is a hidden track, so it technically doesn't count. :)
