Has Chris Martin lost his ability to write good lyrics?

Featured Replies

This is kind of random and stupid, but whenever I listen to X&Y...when he sings "fighting with my weak hand"..I can't help but laugh because it reminds me of Scary Movie 2... "TAKE MY HAND!!"

hahaha yeah! that guy was pretty scary :/

I think its more exciting if the lyrics dont always make sense, coz it gets you thinking..'what was he trying to say here?'

Music is the main thing, but lyrics are just ideas put together into a melody..

listen to careful where you stand

lovely lyrics

chris is capable of writing lovely lyrics and he does

....most of the time :P

chris' lyrics bring the album down. Musically, every member of the band has improved a lot but Chris' lyrics are not nearly as good as those in parachutes and AROBTTH.

Here is some proof of bad lyrics

"You cut me down a tree

and brought it back to me

and that's what made me see

where I was going wrong"

1. he uses the three most rhymable and overused word in elementary school poetry. tree me and see.

2. How the hell can these lyrics make sense? Just read the first two lines. How can that be possible? and the las line just doesn't belong. how does being cut from a tree make someone see where he/she is going wrong?

I agree with you mate, Swallowed By The Sea has the worst lyrics ever, I played it to my missus in bed last night, she just said "Christopher (her 5 year old) could write better than that".

Lyrics don't always have to make perfect sense you know....just listen to Radiohead's lyrics!

at least thom yorke writes lyrics that are complete thoughts. chris writes like a few catchy lines and the rest is just like a handful of random words.

Yeah, Radiohead lyrics always make more sense than people think they do, you just actually have to think about them. Most Coldplay lyrics start sounding like the dumbest statements ever if you think about them for too long.

chris writes like a few catchy lines and the rest is just like a handful of random words.

Ehm, they're called metaphors. If you can understand Thom's, surely you can understand Chris'?

Chris's metaphors (when they're actually metaphors) are so blindingly obvious that they make me slap my forehead in disbelief.

"Lights go out and I can’t be saved

Tides that I tried to swim against

Have bought me down upon my knees

Oh I beg, I beg and plead

Singing

Come out of things unsaid

Shoot an apple off my head

And a trouble that can’t be named

A tiger’s waiting to be tamed"

That's just one line after another of pure banality.

And "Amsterdam" is one of my favorite Coldplay songs, but I try not to think too much about what he's actually singing:

"Come on, my star is fading

And I swerve out of control

If I, if I’d only waited

I’d not be stuck here in this hole

Come here my star is fading

And I swerve out of control

And I swear I waited and waited

I’ve got to get out of this hole"

It's so generic that it becomes completely meaningless.

Rather than think of this as a huge negative thing, however, I prefer to think about how talented a melodist Chris must be to make those songs really moving. :D

i think he focus more on if it fits the song, not what the actual lyric is. it's like trying to write a poem in 5th grade and all the syllables have to match. anyway yeah, i don't think anyone is actually reading this so i'm done.

Chris Martin is the king of good music.

Chris Martin makes the beste lyrics and are the best singer in the hole wide world!! But if you dont agree, your noot a real Coldplay fan! :P

But you dont have to make good lyrics to do a great song.. norwegian's best rock band turbonegro, they have the worst text ever but the music is killing!!

I appreciate all the comments, but the main criticism when this album is actually released will be the lyrics. The more I listen to this album, the more souless its content becomes. A nice melody isn't enough.

Has Chris Martin lost his ability to write good lyrics?...

...NO! :P

[glow=red:0240530483]Agree![/glow:0240530483] :P :D

Chris lyrics aren't always to be taken literally, we should know that by knowing his personality! lol

That line in "Swallowed by the Sea" basically means (to me) that this person would do things that are so amazing for Chris and that's when he realized what he was doing wrong. Am I the only one that gets that?

It sucks that you guys read those lyrics and take them literally word for word. Look beyond what's written. This album is beautifully written.

Agree!

Well thats cleared this one up! You can all go back to your homes safely.

anyway yeah, i don't think anyone is actually reading this so i'm done.

Hahahahaha.

Okay. Chris Martin's lyrics are quite simple and easy to understand. But this is what makes them so good...they exactly express how a normal human can feel like .why 1000 metaphors that noone understands?

Fe isn't the very best songwriter in the world, that's right. I'd say, maybe Bono? But (OKAY you can all start to slap me now) on the new U2 album, I find the melodies way not as good as Coldplay.
