yeah, you have to start with the first album to see progression of their music and theres no doubt Parachutes will wet an appetite to listen to the other Coldplay albums .. just start in order .. it's no good going backwards :)

AROBTTH...just based on my experience..before this album, i didn't really listen to coldplay except yellow and trouble. but i've heard so much about coldplay that i was curious.

Since there's only three (all of which are superb) I would say just listen to them one by one in chronological order. That way they get to hear the band as it evolved, etc. etc. WITHOUT it being a massive slog since there's only two albums after that.

 

So three albums is hardly harmful :D

I think it's their best album too.

I like X&Y, but there's some songs on A Rush Of Blood To The Head that really stick out and are just amazing, so I'd vote AROBTTH. :D
