Coldplay... when does it become an obsession?

Featured Replies

Coldplay. To some people this word means nothing, and to some this means absolutely everything.

Have you ever sat back and thought how much you like actually like Coldplay? Try it. Are they that band who sung Yellow or an extremely important part of your life that you cannot do without? When was the last time you listened to Coldplay? When was the last time you thought about Coldplay? When does it become an obsession?

I have been thinking about this for quite a while.

I listen to Coldplay everyday. EVERYDAY. I have little or no time to listen to other bands. My girlfriend has a go at me everytime we drive in my car because I ALWAYS have Coldplay in the cd player. She used to think Coldplay were boring, now she knows all the words to Warning Sign... I play guitar. 95% of the time I play my guitar, I am playing something by Coldplay. 99% of the time I am playing something by Coldplay, it is Warning Sign. Coldplay will end up in a conversation I am involved in almost everyday. Coldplay are in my thoughts at least once every hour. Chris Martin is my hero. I went to my local sports store to buy a pair of Adidas (three black stripes) trainers just because he wore them for part of the 2005 tour. They cost £50. I bought them anyway. I am on eBAY everyday looking for something in my Coldplay collection that I do not own. ONLY official releases. I am currently saving up £1000 to bid on an original copy of the Safety EP. I need a car, desposit for my own place... but no, I want a CD with 3 TRACKS for £1000.

So I start to wonder, am I obsessed?

^ :stunned: So many things you just wrote are just like me. I can totally relate!!!!

I quit an $80,000/year job so I can go to more shows and don't have to fight to try and get time off. It's disturbing, I know. :embarrased:

Dan - you and I think alike...

I tell you, I have Coldplay on my MP3 player at work and I listen to them all day everyday.

My hubby is used to my obsessive personality because I've been a long time Keanu Reeves fan and have done some crazy stuff, where that man is concerned [like flying over to the US for a movie premiere, shit like that].

I dunno - Coldplay is the band for me. I don't like listening to anything else [much]. If I do listen to something else, I always end up going back to Coldplay.

For instance, I've been listening to 'Silent Alarm' by Bloc Party lately and last nite I went out to Jongluers with staff from work. There was a disco and when I was driving home, I said 'sod it, I ain't listening to Bloc Party. Gimme some Coldplay' and I just HAD to listen to X&Y.

It soothes me...

I am beyond help.... :stunned:

Good points there DAN. I can completly relate to you on that one. It is somewhat of an obsession. Just this morning my mom was telling me about this gift she got me and I was thinking the whole time 'it's something Coldplay, it's comething Coldplay... the Talk DVD... yeah...' and she looked at me and goes "No it is NOT something Coldplay."

It was funny, but completly commonplace. They are, really, a part of my everyday life. If I'm in conversation I can always find a way back to the band. :D

Welcome to the club.

ETA Oh yes, and sometimes I'll go a pretty long time without listening to Coldplay (Like I'll go on a Sigur rós binge for awhile), but then I'll play a Coldplay song and it's like I'm coming home.

IT'S SO WEIRD. WHY DO THEY DO THIS TO ME?

You guys have pretty much typed what I feel, so...

:o :o :o :o :o :o

yea ok i like coldplay... they're cool and all, and i like their music, but it's not an obssession.

This really isn't healthy guys!! :o lol

always good to be versatile

oh good, I'm not the only one. I kinda thought it was weird that I've listened to Coldplay so much I've even memorized LIVE tracks, like even all the little things Chris says. Then, there's the whole being guilty about listening to another band every once and a while.. Then there's the whole getting on my family for not buying fair trade coffee (which my mom bought yesterday, thankyouverymuch-ah). Then there's saying goodnight to my coldplay posters. How crazy is that?! I put the 2003 concert dvd on for my cat when I left yesterday to be in a show   how messed up am I? When you almost cry because your regular CD store doesn't have the wall sized Coldplay poster anymore. When you listen to The Scientist straight for 45 minutes on your way home from school. When you go to bed with it on repeat! I listen to coldplay every hour of everyday, and when I'm not, I'm thinking about listening to them

I totally know where you're coming from, - DAN -.

Hey Dan.....I know how you feel about Warning Sign...I ADORE that song!!!! Whenever it starts playing, I always feel so happy...I love it so much. It's always been my favourite. :nice:

I dont think Im as obsessed as some people...but in the past four or five months I have definitely been thinking about Coldplay, playing them constantly, talking to people who like em and I just have too many photos of em on my pc.

In July or August I was thinking "oh crap...theyve just done the tour in Uk... Crystal Palace, Bolton etc.., I'll never see them for ages now....when they announced the December dates I was like OBSESSED with getting tickets at the beginning of Sept.....If I hadnt of got them I would have been hysterical. :/ I was ecstatic to get the standing tix :D

^ :stunned: So many things you just wrote are just like me. I can totally relate!!!!

Me too! The thinking about them and listening to them thing definitely. I even have a jacket which is slightly similar to Chris's. When I play my guitar it is pretty much all Coldplay and my Ipod is probably 65% Coldplay. I guess it is obsession but it is so good to have something like that in your life instead of not loving and being isolated. Long may it continue!

well that sort of sums up what i do, ecxept for playing the guitar and stuff, but i do listen to other bands......i also memorized live recordings and know every little word Chris says...

Haha. All his little yelps and stuff.

I understand completely where you're coming from. Only for me, it can vary between Coldplay and U2.

I'm sure a lot of people think it's mad to be so in love with a band, or a song, or whatever. It's not to me, though. Yesterday I was at Best Buy and there were people lined up outside in the frigid cold, waiting for a new shipment of X-Box 360s. That were coming in TODAY. None of them were garuanteed one, but they were still there. For whatever reasons, I don't know. People were laughing at them (and I'll admit, it was sort of amusing to see tents outside Best Buy). But... My mom looked at me and said "Does this seem familiar to you?" because back in October that's exactly what I did outside the Garden in Boston to see U2. To me, it's no different. Sure it could be crazy to wait outside all day and night to get front row at a concert (or a gaming system), but if you're passionate about it and if you love it and if it's not hurting anyone, who cares?

I'd much rather be passionate about something (like Coldplay) than feel nothing. That'd be so boring. I feel, if you're gonna love something, go all out.  I think I have a life, and sure my life might revolve a little too heavily around April 4th when I'm seeing Coldplay, but whatever. I ain't complainin'. I want to get a job just so I can pay for all my concerts. I want a car so I can drive up to New Hampshire to see Coldplay on April 3rd.

I love being obsessive. It's so much fun. :wideeyed:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys :)

I feel like I know you all a little bit more :D

:nice:

Oh an_cat, you are my hero. That's exactly how I feel. I think everyone should (and probably does) have something like that in their life. If you're not like... crazy physco (Like a stalker or somethng) I think it's perfectly fine and fun to be so passionate about something. And in my opinion, I think that there is no better thing to be passionate about than good music.

And I can totally relate to seeing Coldplay live. I fought so hard to get tickets in Orlando (I live in Atlanta) because... well... it's Coldplay! It seemed completly natural for me to pay hundreds of dollars for tickets and travel hundreds of miles to go see them.

And I can't wait to get a car so I can get a job and pay for tickets faster and get plenty of merchandise.

It's crazy but I love it. :)

Girl - I am so with you!

when........you start posting reasons here

Oh yeah totally! What a fantastic thing we are all passionate about!

My life would be so dull without Coldplay....it drives my family totally mad, and they say its 'not a healthy obsession' , but all i know is that i've honestly never been happier. :)

Everytime i do crappy temp work i just sit there singing Coldplay in my head and thinking "just think about the money you will get, you can buy more Coldplay stuff!!!", and it gets me through each day. I spend most of the money i earn on anything to do with them. The days im not working, i sit on here most of the day. And at the same time i have all their songs playing on random on itunes. So yeah, i guess i also have no time for other bands anymore either, which i hadnt even thought about much until now.

Coldplay give me a reason to get out of bed in the morning. And without them i wouldnt fall asleep listening to them on my ipod with a big smile on my face. (after also saying goodnight to my posters - thescientist06, you're not the only one :) )

Coldplay gets me through the day, makes my life a little brighter. They are one of my lifesavers. That's how important they are to me. Obsessed? Yeah, but I love them too much to care! Coldplay seem to be a great group of people, you know?

As an_cat said: I'd much rather be passionate about something (like Coldplay) than feel nothing.

I suck at expressing myself, btw. :D

Haha. It's like two support groups in one.

an_cat, nobody could've said it better! I agree, it may be a little weird, but it's fun to be a complete fanatic. It's more fun to get REALLY into it, and say that yes, I drove 12 hours straight to see Coldplay, and yes, I did spend 3 years worth of allowance for front row tickets at all three shows at Earl's Court. Why? because I love them and what they do. :D

 I'm extremely obsessed, and I have been for about 5 years now... 2000 is when Parachutes came out... right? Or was it before that? I don't even remember anymore, but ever since Parachutes i've been hooked. They're a fucking brilliant band, and it's hard to listen to other bands after you listen to them. They're that good.

luv coldplay. I keep lending my coldplay cds to my friends and i dont know why they dont like it as much as i do. i felt alone but nevertheless happy.

and in my class they've already nicknamed me "coldpleh" glad there are others here who i can totally relate to.

its just no matter what music they make, i just gotta hear it... :smug:

if its coldplay it's a healthy obsession because for one they're a good influence and bec. they're worth it... :D I suck at expressing too...

I see where you are coming from. I wonder if a thread on here is the best place to get unbiased feedback about being obsessed? Hehe..I think I am programmed to not become obsessed with any band or anything for that matter. I think loving a band and being devoted to them is great. They need fans like you and lots of others on here. But in my opinion, when it starts to interfere with real life stuff, like paying bills and getting a car, then I think some thought and change might be needed. :) I think Chris would want you to love the band and listen to the music, but I don't think the guys would want other areas of your life to fall behind for them :) But I think it is good that you're thinking about it.
