Whohoo I'm intellectual!

Featured Replies

God.......

Do you know that?

People who like to pretend they are intellectual?

I mean by using specific expressions for things just to show how intellectual they are?

An Ex-friend of mine used to do it.....(a reason why we are no friends anymore)...

She used to use these expressions when she talked to me and she knew exactly that I would ask what this means.......

In the end she was the intellectual one and I stood there like a dumb child.....

I hated that....

Or authors who use latin expressions and things like that in their books.....ok....doing it not too often is ok.....but enough is enough....

I don't want to say now that I like more stupid and suprficial people more.....hell no.......

But something between it is better.....

If you have good arguemtns for a discussion, can express yourself, are intelligent etc......

but not like my ex-friend.....no.....

I hate that!

I absolutely hate people who pretend they know everything about anything. If you bring up something in conversation they tend to take it, and disect it in their own ways to make them look like they know something, but really they are just stating the obvious and putting long words in to make themselves look intellectual.

I know one guy who does this all the time, like me and a friend were talking about the Iraq war earlier, and just wondering the complete tally of deaths, and he just turned to us (We werent actually talking to him) and he said "Friendly fire or in combat?" and we said, "Uhh, combat?" and he pauses and says "Hmm in hindsight, I'm not entirely sure, but I dont think anyone is, so-" and I said "OK friendly fire?" Reply: "I dont really know but-" and I'm like "Well why did you even ask in the first place?!" And he just kinda pauses and fixes his glasses GAH I hate people like that.

He also not only uses big words, but he often uses them without having any idea of what they mean, and its so brilliant when I catch him out doing it. I cant remember the sentence but he said "Unison" in the middle of something where it did not belong at all, and I said "Unison? That means a lot of people doing something at the same time, what does that have to do with what you were saying?" And he fixes his glasses and mumbles trying to still look smart.

Gahd. Rant over.

people like that should be locked in a dark room with Albie and a baseball bat between them

^ahh.......exactly what I mean...I hate it!

this "friend" of mine once wanted to explain a letter to me a father of a pupil rom our school wrote about a topic of school (god bad sentence).....

the man used difficult expressions...and I didn't understand everything he wanted to tell us.....

So she said:"Ok.....I'll will translate it to you!"

GOD.........and she really did.....sentence be sentence......as if i was stupid and even didn't understand german anymore-.....

I guess you're talking about people that try to make other people look stupid. not neccessarily "intellectuals" but on the virge of know-it-alls. People like that confuse me and are bad teachers, but I don't really have a problem with it. At least they are smart... but they're not as good teachers as other people.

I don't think being a know-it-all is THAT bad compared to being nieve though... being nieve is far worse than being a know-it-all... at least a know-it-all bases their beliefs on their logic... nieve people base their beliefs on know-it-alls who write books

being nieve means you base your beliefs on stupid things... like a sentence from a book or on a small event that maybe has nothing to do with your belief. .. If someone said they believe all dog's go to heaven because they read it in the newspaper that would be a nieve belief for that person.

I dated a girl who seemed to believe exactly what she wanted to believe and it really is the most annoying trait someone can possibly have imho.

well..............then I'm talking about nieve people and know-it alls....

Yeah I've known some people like that, very annoying with their pseudo rhetoric!

Being intellectual is not something you need to pretend, it just simply goes at hand with your personality and the way you act, something you irradiate like beauty. Pretending just makes you look stupid.

Well, I have to admit I like using cool sounding english words such as presented in the following sentence:"Art thou not powerfull enough to reclaim thine realm, or shall I decapitate thy foes, so that thou is not a spineless wuss anymore, or shall I ponder about the reasons behind thine cowardice?"-ain't I imaginative :=)

On topic, I must say I'm sometimes affraid that I sound like the described "intellectual" without that being my intention.

Hey wretch fear my wrath! :D

Btw where are the bloody smilies, this new board is weird.

I hate when somebody tells me what I think, what I feel or what I'm gonna do.Like they know everything about me...These people annoy me to death.

there's a french expression for that

la science c'est comme le beurre moins t'en as plus tu l'etales

free french translation :wideeyed:

science is like butter the less you have the more you spread it on your toast

:chinese:

Yeah I've known some people like that, very annoying with their pseudo rhetoric!

Hah.

Well I've always liked people who know other things or know more than me because I can pick it up and learn it ;) But sometimes.. I like to pretend that I don't know what they are talking about or what some words mean just to see what they'll say or the reaction they are going to give me hehehe but yeah there are some people who like to make other people stupid.. which is funny but they are doing on purpose which is not nice and it's annoying and rude.

Thats good when ppl are really smart and you can learn smth from them, but if they just pretend to be clever, its not the same.

i absolutely i hate that. we have quite many people at our school who are like this. they use lots of foreign words, but if you listen to them you realise the things theyre talking about absolutely dont make sense. but they don't seem to realise, they really think they know abot any topic.
