February 28, 201016 yr I've heard something about her playing Marlene Dietrich before, has she actually signed on now? Wow, she sure is busy these days :D Squeaky clean Gwyneth Paltrow lowers the tone to play Marlene Dietrich GWYNETH PALTROW will need all her acting ability for her latest role: the squeaky clean actress with vegetarian tendencies is to play Marlene Dietrich, the Hollywood legend known for her louche nightclub lifestyle. While Paltrow leads a healthy existence and is happily married to Chris Martin of Coldplay, Dietrich was known for her dependence on drink and drugs, plus a string of affairs with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Yul Brynner and John Wayne. However, Dietrich was also a staunch opponent of Nazi anti-Semitism and Paltrow, who has Jewish roots on her father’s side, has long admired her. Paltrow will take the lead acting and producing role in a BBC drama of Dietrich’s life written by Andrew Davies, well known for his adaptations of classics such as Pride and Prejudice and Bleak House. Playing Dietrich will be a new departure for Paltrow, 37, who won a best actress Oscar for her part in the 1998 film Shakespeare in Love, as the lover of the playwright. Critics may be surprised that Paltrow, who has a thin voice and is best known for light romantic acting, should be chosen to portray the husky-voiced Dietrich. Davies said his script would start at the time of The Blue Angel, Dietrich’s breakthrough film in 1930 that brought her a Hollywood contract and a new life in America. “I’m concentrating on her from that period into the war and the 1950s,” said Davies. After Dietrich left Germany, she became a vocal critic of Nazi anti-Semitism. Paltrow’s father, Bruce, came from a family of Russian Jewish emigrés. As well as her films, Dietrich was famous for songs such as Falling in Love Again and the wartime hit Lili Marlene. Recordings by Paltrow are less well remembered, although Cruisin’ did reach No 1 in Australia. BBC Worldwide Productions, which has bought the rights to the biography of Dietrich by her daughter Maria Riva, will film the drama in the United States for the BBC and HBO, the US TV channel. http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/celebrity/article7044156.ece

February 28, 201016 yr The Dietrich film has Oscar written all over it. She led a really interesting life - far removed from GP's own life, and she would get to show her musical skills, and the Academy loves a biopic
