What is obsession?

1. Compulsive preoccupation with a fixed idea or an unwanted feeling or emotion, often accompanied by symptoms of anxiety.

2. A compulsive, often unreasonable idea or emotion.

 

Well, that's f-ucking great, but what do those words truly mean? I've heard many different views on this question.

 

One of my friends states that obession does not exist... that it's a man-made "feeling" that lets people feel like they have something to live for. I can see where this comes from, but I don't really buy all of it.

 

When you are born, are you born with a trigger in your subconscious that only needs a certain catalyst? Like, you're born with the love of a certain message that a song sends out. Then, when you hear this song, you become enthralled?

 

What about the obsession with another human being? I'm not talking about "being in love" as most people would know it... I'm talking about the strange, dillusional, psycho "love" that causes people to kill for no reason. Is love a form of obsession? Is infatuation obsession?

 

 

Now... would you say that you are obsessed with something or someone? A piece of music, a band, your girlfriend/boyfriend, your wife/husband, a movie, a book, a poem.. anything?

 

I can't say that I really am at this point, but please, I want to have some discussion on this.

i always thought i was obsessed with what ppl thought about me...and i would freak myself out about it sometimes...well i still kinda do...and the reason i think i'm obsessed about this is because i would think about it constantly...i would think about what i should say to ppl and why i should say it and if i did say it what would happen and what would they think...or what would they think of me...these thoughts would always be on my mind to the point where i would become sick. hmmm....do you called that an obsession...or i mean do you think thats an obsession? thats kind of different...its not directed towards someone or something but to my feelings and thoughts.....hmm...thats kind of sad to me....obsessed with my own feelings and thoughts.

but the way you put it...i dont know now if it is obsession....

and like i said before i was obsessed with guy berryman....even though i was just playing....btw i still love you guy....i am infatuated by this person and he doesnt even know it.....but that is just something little...something i play around with...and actually if that was an obsession i wouldnt call it that.....he's just someone i talk about on here...i never mention his name anywhere else...well mainly because no one else knows about him.
