Italy defender Alessandro Nesta has been ruled out of Monday's FIFA World Cup™ second-round match against Australia after failing to recover from a groin strain, team doctor Enrico Castellaci said on Saturday.

The 30-year-old centre-back suffered the injury in the 17th minute of Thursday's 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic which left Italy as Group E winners. Castellacci said it was too early to say if Nesta would be fit for the quarter-finals should Italy overcome the Socceroos.

Marco Materazzi, who scored Italy's first goal against the Czechs after coming off the bench to replace Nesta, will retain his place at the heart of the Azzurri's defence. Midfielder Daniele De Rossi will also be absent as he serves the second of a four-match ban for elbowing Brian McBride in the face during a 1-1 draw with the United States.

oh so it's on monday? it's so confusing here with the times, because they say it's on "tuesday at 1am" so i get confused whether that means the monday night at 1am, or the tuesday night at 1am. so monday? okay cool thanks!

but yes, i just want a good, exciting game :nice:

i guess it must be very weird to watch those games at 1am ... :\

the last aussie game against croatia was at 5am so i had to put my alarm on at 4:30 am to get ready for it. hahaha

the game before that for australia versus brazil was on at 3am.

it's all between 11pm-5am. it's such a hassle, but damn, it's so exciting!

OMG Why must this thread have such an intimidating name!? Aussies have to play them!! :o I'm part Italian but I'm going for Australia seeing I live here but I'll be happy whatever the result. :)

no you won't. you will only be happy with a win from the socceroos.

:uhoh2:

haha i kid, i kid. :P

True...I'd love to see the Aussies kick their butt!
