Featured Replies

The nominations for this year's Nationwide Mercury music prize have been revealed this morning (July 18).

At a small ceremony at the Royal Commonwealth Club in London, Jools Holland announced the 12 albums that will battle it out for this year's prize.

The nominations are:

Arctic Monkeys - 'Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not'

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - 'Ballad Of The Broken Seas'

Editors - 'The Back Room'

Guillemots - 'Through The Windowpane'

Richard Hawley - 'Coles Corner'

Hot Chip - 'The Warning'

Muse - 'Black Holes & Revelations'

Zoe Rahman - 'Melting Pot'

Lou Rhodes - 'Beloved One'

Scritti Politti - 'White Bread Black Beer'

Sway - 'This Is My Demo'

Thom Yorke - 'The Eraser'

Revealing this year's nominees, chair of judges Simon Frith hailed the artists for reflecting contemporary life.

"Above all, this year's shortlist for the Nationwide Mercury prize is about the art of the songwriter," he said. "If you want to know what life is like in Britain today, listen to the country's musicians!"

The overall winner of the £20,000 prize will be announced on September 5.

Following the announcement bookies William Hill have immediately installed Arctic Monkeys and Thom Yorke as 5-1 joint favourites, with Muse, Editors and Guillemots are close behind them at 6-1.

Last year's prize was won by Antony & the Johnsons for the album 'I Am A Bird Now'.

I hope Thom wins

  • Author

well, i hope too, but i wouldn't be surprised if one of the commercial bands like Muse or Arctic Monkeys would win it

i hope muse or a-monkeys win. so yeah, go the commercial bands!! haha.

Uh hell if Arctic Monkeys win that'll be the silliest contest ever :uhoh:

Of course I want Thom or MUSE to win :smartass:

Muse  baby......... and if not, I'd say it would make me just as happy if Thom Yorke won that sucker.

Guillemots to win.

They are the type of band those mercury music prize judges like.

Thom Yorke, Muse, Editors or Arctic Monkeys

I would happy if one of those won.

I would love it if muse or hot chip won, but it's so obviously going to be arctic monkeys

Editors! The Back Room is a brilliant album! I would settle for either them or Thom Yorke winning.

Although listening to Both Hot chip albums, they are a very modern-day Kraftwerk.

Arctic Monkeys were favourites to win the £20,000 prize

The Arctic Monkeys have won this year's Mercury Prize for their album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.

The Sheffield-based band, whose album became the fastest-selling debut in the UK in February, were run-away favourites to take the award.

They were up against nominees including Muse, Editors, Thom Yorke, Richard Hawley, The Guillemots, Scritti Politti and Hot Chip.

The £20,000 prize is for the best album of the year by a British or Irish act.

Yes - it's all a big con, really. A waste of time.;)

I see the judges copped out and handed it to the Arctic Monkeys, instead of Muse or Gulimots, the current band of choice for fashion-victim sixth-formers.

This is where all the so-called fans of the arctic monkeys post that the best album won, but really if you listen to the album in full now, it's only a mire 6.4/10.

^Well I couldn't give "a monkey's"!!

Well I'M glad they won, I still think it's an awesome album. Listen to it all the time.

Though I was rooting for Thom Yorke.

And for that matter The Editors... and Muse... and Hot Chip... and...

let's put it this way... I listened to all of the nominees this afternoon, and there wasn't a single one that was the WRONG choice... they were all equally amazing in different ways.

I just wish I could have seen the ceremony.

Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys EP > Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

They're way over-hyped, if you ask me!;)

Occupational hazard of living in Britain, I think... everything gets hyped up so fast, and then people get bored of it before anyone in North America even has a chance to hear it, while meanwhile most everyone over here takes so long to find something new that we're still stuck with Nickleback and the Black Eyed Peas.

It has nothing to do with the content of anything... just the industry that flaunts it.

Well Nickelback, Black Eyed Peas and The Arctic Monkeys all have something in common as far as I'm concerned - none of them do anything for me!;)
