The songs TOTP banned

Featured Replies

MANY classic records were banned from being played on Top Of The Pops, which bows out after 42 years on Sunday.

Probably the most famous were the two chart toppers, Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s sexually suggestive Relax in 1984 and the grunting and groaning on Je T’Aime… Moi Non Plus in 1969 of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin.

Others include The Sex Pistols's God Save The Queen (1977) because of its anti-monarchist stance; The Prodigy’s Smack My Bitch Up (1996) for its wife beating lyrics; and D Mob’s 1988 song We Call It Acieeed with its drug references.

Others which fell foul of a BBC ban were Max Romeo’s steamy Wet Dream (1969); The Kink’s tranny anthem Lola (1970) because of it’s reference to Coca Cola; and The Police's Invisible Sun (1981) for references to Northern Ireland troubles.

Not surprisingly also on the list were Judge Dread’s ‘70s hits Big 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 and Ivor Biggun’s The Winker’s Song (1978) because of their sexual content.

More recently George Michael's I Want Your Sex (1987) never made it onto TOTP as the BBC banned it before the 9pm watershed.
