June 22, 200521 yr POP QUIZ: DANIEL KESSLER OF INTERPOL Aidin Vaziri Sunday, December 5, 2004 Printable Version Email This Article While other New York bands like the Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs were busy posing for photographs, Interpol quietly conquered the world. Releasing its second album, "Antics," earlier this year, the stylish quartet toured stadiums with the Cure, had R.E.M. cover one of its songs at Madison Square Garden and scored a genuine hit with its latest single, "Slow Hands." On Friday, the band plays Live 105's Not So Silent Night concert at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. We spoke with guitarist Daniel Kessler by phone from Oslo, Norway. Q: Is the tour going well? A: You know, everything was going fine, but then the other night we had a really long drive from Cologne to Copenhagen at like 3 a.m. or something, and our bus broke down along the way. So we all missed a whole sleep cycle. Q: A whole sleep cycle? That sounds serious. A: Yeah, there have been a few challenges to get through. Q: I hope you had enough alcohol on the bus to make it through the night. A: That wasn't a problem. Q: From what I understand, booze is the lifeblood of Interpol. A: I think that's a misconception. We're not, like, alcoholics or anything like that. Q: Please, you don't need to play it down for me. A: No, but it's not like the cliche sloppy alcoholics going around playing music. We enjoy our drink, and that's that. Q: You need something. The band has been on tour forever. How have you guys not killed each other yet? A: We've had a pretty serious run this year. We haven't even had five days in a row off to recharge the batteries. But, at the same time, we can all relate to each other better than anyone else because we all miss the same things: our own beds, New York, our friends. Q: I believe this is your fourth time through San Francisco this year. A: I think it's the third. Q: Who's keeping count? How was it playing SBC Park with the Cure? A: I got an extremely big kick playing where the Giants play. I'm not a huge Giants fan, but I do like baseball, and to be playing on a baseball diamond was pretty crazy. You just don't think that's going to ever happen. Q: I don't know why, but Interpol was the only band that actually sounded like it belonged in a baseball stadium. A: Well, the factors are against most people when they're coming out of a PA system at a baseball stadium, but it's good to know we sounded all right. Q: Do weird things always happen to you? A: There have been a few, yeah, sure, like sitting down in a cafeteria with the members of the Cure every night. This is a band that's been around since I was 4. Q: R.E.M. also covered one of your songs when it played Madison Square Garden this year. A: There you go. That's pretty surreal. Our manager got a copy of it off the Internet, and just to hear Michael Stipe playing guitar, which he apparently never does onstage, and singing "NYC" was a pretty strange moment. Q: You must be doing something right. Do you happen to know what it is? A: No. You know, for us it's always been very simple. It's just about writing songs and progressing. It's not really much more complicated than that. E-mail Aidin Vaziri at [email protected].
